Official Samsung 2011 PNxxD7000 Thread - Page 80

My PN51D7000 is currently on order. They have the PN51D8000 in stock now for $215 more.

Is the difference significant between these 2?

I love the bright picture of my 46HX729 and my room is extremely bright. I also don't want to worry about static logos and 4:3 bars as my kid's are always watching the tv and would never take into consideration of those issues.

Ok, those are good points and I will defer to your judgment. And since that model is the top model, I revise my statement. I'd take that Sony too if it were cheaper, as it has great CNet reviews.

55 is plenty big in a bright room.

Just saw this today from the CNET reviewer of the D7000 and D8000, and wanted to bring it up here:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-...t/?tag=nl.e702

Highlights:

"Note the title "original picture settings," which means the post-calibration settings we publish in the review. The big caveat here is that readjusting the picture settings on the Samsung PN59D8000 at 1,500 hours caused its black level to return to 0.0074 Fl--essentially the same as the initial 0.0071 measurement at 150 hours. In other words, depth of black "drifts" higher on the D8000 over time unless you readjust it periodically, and so far the D7000 appears to be behaving the same way, although I didn't recalibrate it yet to confirm. (This finding corrects an earlier mistake I made regarding Samsung black levels over time; see No. 6 below for details.)"

And:

"As mentioned above, I originally indicated that the Samsung PN59D8000 became lighter as it aged (I made this statement in the performance section of the PN59D7000 review). The fact that the lightening can be corrected via calibration contradicts that statement. I will update the PN59D8000's settings and correct the PN59D7000 review accordingly."

I just wonder what he means by "readjusting picture settings".

Any suggestions for a wall mount?

sounds like the automatic brightness limiter. this is a "feature" in most plasma tv's because supposedly if they were to display a full white screen at full brightness it will either cause too much power to be drawn, or the screen will over heat. it has nothing to do with floating blacks...

i have a pc hooked to my pn59d7000 and see this same thing. it doesnt really bother me b/c in normal viewing conditions you almost never come across a full white screen. also, with proper calibration it is less noticable. When the TV isn't running at full brightness all the time, it doesnt dim as much, and if the gray balance is even, its less detectable.

you might want to check out some other peoples settings that they reached using meters in this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1333561

I'm almost certain he's referring to getting them re-calibrated. Later in the article he says that if you are going to get them professionally calibrated, and can only afford it once, try and wait as long as possible (in his example, about a year's worth of viewing) to take the black level rise into account.
Understood, but say you calibrate it, or have someone do it. A year later when you have a touchup appointment, does just the touchup tweak do it, or do you need to reset and do it from scratch. It's a little vague to me.

A simple adjustment of the Brightness control is all that is required. Use a test disk like AVSHD. It's trivial. (Oh, how I dislike the word 'calibrate' when it is used to mean 'adjust.')

finally pulled the trigger on the 7000 which is the set i wanted all along!

when the price rose recently i almost leaned towards the 6500 but prices leveled back out today on amazon and i pulled the trigger.

i am a noob to plasmas and have done alot of research, but still want to know about the 100 hour break in period. some ppl say with these new sets it is unnecessary....i want to use caution though.

i dont plan on using the break in slides, is it ok to just use lower contrast and brightness with full screen picture for the first 100 hours? no static images? thanks in advance and sorry for beating a dead horse i know this topic has been beaten to death.

Congrats on the new set. I think your best bet is to "don't be stupid" particularly in the first 100 hours. I used the slides to get through this period as quick as possible. You can just "baby" it along during the first 100 hours, no long gaming events, no static images for a long time, etc.

I agree. I own my own gear and that comment was very vague to me.

TV's here. I have a question seeing as this PN59D7000 is a JUNE build date how can I check to see if the o-ring fix has been applied? I checked around the bezel but could'nt notice anything, maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing? One more question I would really like to watch some 1080p movies but I heard that the letterbox picture can burn-in? How can I avoid that?
Thanks

Thank you for clarifying that Larry. I had just assumed that since he was a professional reviewer and knows what he's talking about, that when he used the term "calibration" he meant the process of breaking out the tools and instruments and taking measurements, etc.

A simple brightness adjustment is a much better solution!

anyone try the new FW yet and see if it affects calibration settings?
I have not yet. The last one did not affect settings.
Looks like someone at HDJ may have detected a slight black rise on their D7000.
Going to return my set today or this weekend. The buzzing was just too loud. I'll get a replacement from my best buy store. Also the update is not showing for me on the tv.
Just received delivery today - PN51D7000 and will hook up tonight.

Hopefully all will be ok?

I installed it via USB last night. The process went smoothly and when done, no user settings were changed.

The improvement with SD pictures is obvious. (I watch a lot of TCM in SD -- Directv.)

I am about to recieve a 59" d7000 next week. I downloaded the new firmware in anticipation and planned on doing it via USB.

Can you install these updates via WiFi instead?
