I'll tell you this - Until I find a permanent fix for this horrible brightness (or contrast, not sure) dimming, my PN64D7000 is on the verge of going back. Nearly everything else is perfect, but this detracts from the picture so much when it happens it cannot be ignored.

I'm gonna pop in a few blu-rays later and see if I experience the problem.

simple question. on the 7000 does the tv swivel right and left on the stand? My c6500 does and it's a great feature for our living room set up.

Yes, it does.

This may not be the right place for this, so excuse me if its not; I have a 59d7000, can anyone recommend the best way to show a picture slideshow? I have my laptop sharing the pictures, but everyone is showing kind of small on the tv. I can enlarge them but I can't figure out how to set the larger size as a default, meaning I have to enlarge each one after advancing the picture, kind of annoying. Any ideas?

Will you do me a favor? Do you have yours connected to the internet? If so, can you play a few videos from Vimeo, that one program the TV comes with - the HD sort. Tell me if, during certain videos, you see the screen darken.

If no one else is seeing this, maybe it's just in my head.

When I do it through smart hub, like for break in images, I just went to the folder and it brought up the thumbnails, I opened one full screen and there was a toolbar on the bottom that had a start slideshow button. It disappears quickly but pressing enter on the remote brings it up again.

It's not just in your head. The best place for me to see it is when I fire up the Netflix app. Most of the screen goes solid red while the app is loading. After a second, the screen incrementally gets darker. It isn't smooth; it goes down a notch ever half second or so, about 7 or 8 times. Appreciably darker, not an optical illusion.

Did you try to do the factory reset yet?

No, I'm in a much bigger pickle as of this afternoon. I won't be doing anything with my tv for a while.

Samsung Plasma Bricked by Automatic Firmware Update
post #402 of 4112
Has anyone figured out how to disconnect tv from your network so it doesn't update firmware automatically? At one point today it started to download without prompt and quickly turned the tv off and unplugged it. No firmware update so far....

My wife is watching a movie, so it'll have to wait.

I do see the screen darken in Netflix menu, but that's pretty much been it. I say "pretty much" because I noticed it a little bit watching an episode of "The Office."

Yes, I also used to see it during menus, particularly in the SMART TV menu, and the Vimeo menu. I thought the dimming was just part of the applications. However, after doing the factory reset and turning off the two features I mentioned, it doesn't dim on the menus anymore. The SMART TV menu, for instance, stays perfectly lit. The only time I see it now is in this one video on Vimeo (I've tried almost all the featured ones) which is very concentrated on white. It seems that when there are excessive whites on the screen, the TV dims them out a bit. It sounds like that local contrast dimming feature, but I thought that was only on the 8000's. I need to investigate this further with more blu-rays and other videos/pictures which are white intensive. So incredibly odd.

By the way, how are you guys streaming .mkv's? Whenever I try to stream one it says "File Format Not Supported". Lots of other formats have worked, though.

PS: I want everyone to know that, despite all my ranting and raving, the picture quality of this television is absolutely phenomenal. It's really breathtaking at times, and once these minor problems (firmware, brightness dim) get taken care of, I'd highly, highly recommend this set.

Weird... I noticed the same behavior on the Netflix intro screen this evening when I am certain I never had before. I also saw it in the YouTube menu and the apps download area. Any static screen began to steadily dim -- as if the motion lighting option was enabled (I verified it was off). Didn't see any dimming outside of SmartHub. This is completely different from the subtle MLL shift being discussed. The dimming effect started after I entered the SM to explore any differences post the 1007 f/w upgrade. I decided to re-enter/exit the SM (mimics a factory reset) and the auto-dimming effect was gone. This suggests motion lighting is stuck on in some cases. This behavior is similar to what was seen on the C-series last year... some menu parameters (MJC and GAME mode) were active and could not be turned off from the menu.

Ah, maybe that's it. One of the features is stuck on, hm.

This is highly annoying, you're right. Try the factory reset and let me know what your findings are.

By the way, what is the more pressing problem?
If the whites and average picture levels are dimming it is the ABL limiting the screen brightness. This is a built in power saving feature on all plasma sets and can't be disabled. (blame the rapid change in energy star ratings for this one, the ABL could have been eliminated by now without them)

The changes in black levels being refered to as brightness pops is a real issue and shouldn't exist. Let's hope they fix it in a firmware update soon.

Can you explain this? Black levels being referred to as brightness pops?

Oh really? I had never heard of this. But what's the point of having good black levels on a TV if the whites dim? One can't even enjoy the contrast.

PS: If this is so common on plasmas, I find it strange that I had never heard of it before now. Hm.

Can you explain how to "mimic a factory reset" I went to the SM once after I got the TV and couldn't figure how to properly exit. I think I had to do a reset. Thanks.

mkv's work fine, after you rename the mkv to avi.

My 51D7000 is now the worlds largest paperweight. Back to Frys we go!!! Not even going to try and call Samsung.

What I saw was not how the ABL normally behaves. It was a static intro (e.g., the bright red Netflix intro) or menu UI that at first appeared very bright then slowly and steadily dimmed.

I think we have reports of the three behaviors below. I've encountered the first two.

1) Slight MLL shift based on APL -- how the panel is driven (i.e., no menu option to disable)
2) Image always dims on static screen -- motion lighting stuck on? (factory reset resolved for me)
3) Very visible and random brightness pops -- only on D5x0 series and/or all 51" panels?

You can exit by simpling pressing the power button or navigating to the factory reset option in the menu. Holding down the EXIT button for 15 sec should do the same thing.

Can you put this into layman's terms? Is this the problem I've been having where the brightness will dim when there are excessive whites on the screen?

Yes, the factory reset and the disabling of all Eco options in addition to the Motion (whatever) fixed this for me also. It must be that one of the settings is stuck on delivery.

Brightness pops? Does that mean the brightness increases at random intervals? I actually do see this sometimes on the volume numbers when altering the volume.

I have the issue on 51D7000
I have a NEW issue I wanted to see if anyone else can notice on their 7000... it is cosmetic but non the less annoying. The bezel, especially the lower part, has like a ripple effect to it, that while not noticeable looking straight on, because quite apparent at an angle, especially when natural light is hitting it.

Almost like its a cheap plastic frame that has diveted in where it was secured underneath.

Anyone else see this?

On a side note, I havent again seen the issue of the screen popping up a shade or dropping a shade (mainly when vast landscapes are shown), I had reported when I first got the TV a few weeks ago.

In fact I havent seen a picture issues since the first couple hours I ran it. The bezel thing is bugging me though, not happy, it looks like ****.

For those of us still shopping, do think your ripples developed over time (maybe from heat?), or did it come that way? Can you maybe post pictures of it? Lastly, what size screen to you have?

Def. didnt develope from heat, I noticed it the min. i got it on the wall (well close to) it is a 59", I tried to take a pic but its hard to capture, atleast w/ my camera, but you can kind of see the issue toward the end of the bezel where the nat. light is shown.

I am going to try and figure out a way to get a better pic. it is quite obvious to the human eye, if looking at an angle.
