Looking for some good, small surround speakers for wall mounting

The space where the surrounds will go is limited. Ideally, I am looking for speakers no taller than eight or nine inches with not too much depth (dimension wise). They will be placed about seven feet above the ground, to the sides of my listening position and ever-so-slightly behind it. They will also be within six inches of wall corners. I want to pair them with Sierra-1 mains from Ascend Acoustics and an SVS PC12-NSD DSP subwoofer. I am willing to spend up to $500.

If you listen to music primarily with an "audience mix," hence use your surrounds only for ambient sounds, you don't have to match the quality of your fronts. A pair of these facing upwards towards the ceiling, and terminated at 100 Hz (where bass is omnidirectional) will work just fine and save you a lot of money: http://www.amazon.com/Energy-CB-5-Bo...1005212&sr=1-1 .

It has also been my experience that for movie sound effects, where your sub takes over below 100 Hz, speakers such as these will work seamlessly.

Those look good height wise, but an almost eight inches, not including the wall mount, I think it may be a little deep for where it needs to be placed. I also notice the minimum ohm rating on the CB-5 is 4 ohms. My Onkyo receiver (no amp) can handle 6 ohms minimum. Probably should have mentioned this. I appreciate the suggestion.

the CB-5 is a 8 ohm nominal speaker, 4 ohm minimum. The impedance fluctuates as a speaker plays different frequencies. The nominal number is the average impedance. Your Onkyo receiver will have absolutely no problem with it.

Since you've got the Sierra's, will the HTM-200's work for you? They can be placed horizontally and the dimensions are 11 x 6 x 6.375, and they ship for $298 a pair.

I, and many others, face their surrounds up towards the ceiling.

GoldenEar SuperSat 3's are a little taller than you want but they're really shallow, 12" H (W) x 4.75" W (H) x 2.7" D. The list price is exactly at your upper limit of $500.

Hello Cuzzin, you may want to check into the Axiom line. I have never herd them but from revies I have read they are quite good. I'll post a link to the site. The MO-V3 is something to view since it is only 2.3" deep, 6.5" H and 6" wide. Looks like $280 for a pair. Link: http://axiomaudio.com/m0-onwall-speaker.html

Another option would be the Orb audio speakers. I have a set of these for my rear surrounds (7.2 system that is) as they work/sound damn good for thier size.

Those Axiom speakers do look good, but the way those mount on the wall looks to be flat against the surface, where I will need to angle the speaker down and in toward my listening position.

So far the NHT SuperZero 2.0 monitors are looking most appealing. I have been reading around and came across the ProMonitor 800 from Definitive Technology (http://www.definitivetech.com/produc...oMonitor%20800). It is a half an inch thinner and slightly shorter than the SuperZeros, both pluses for my situation. Reviews seem favorable. Would these stack up well against the SuperZeros?

With the ProMonitor, you will need to leave room for the top
bass radiator to breathe.

I have this exact situation. I recently got LR Sierras and I am now wanting to get a sierra center and two side channels. I first looked at the htm-200 but it seemed too large. I have a couch against the wall and limited distance to the side boundaries, so it would seem strange to have a speaker larger than your head so close to you. I also could not many reviews on the htm-200 so I am not sure how it compares to the other, smaller alternatives I am considering.

Looking into the Def Tech Promonitor 800 and the NHT Superzero 2.0. Should timbre matching play a role in the selection? The NHT has a silk dome (vs Def Tech aluminum), which seems like it would be more similar to the Sierras. I do like the htm-200 as it should be the most matched to the Sierras. Does anyone know if you would hear a difference in sweeps and matching?

Looks like the Def Tech could handle more bass, reducing localization issues. It is also a little smaller, but it might not work as well for you with the radiator on top.

They will not timbre match - If you listen to a lot of multi channel
music, then timbre matching is important for a seamless sound. If
you do mostly home theater - then you can get buy with it. The
front 3 channels is the biggest deal.

Sure, I actually did end up going with the SuperZero 2.0 speakers that were recommended to me in this thread. They seem to work very well as surrounds, providing plenty of sound immersion. And they were the right fit for the corner they are placed in. Overall, I'm happy with them.

I have to say, as a surround, the polk tl3 is a superb choice In a fantastic sounding and looking rear speaker.
