Direct from CBS:

Just a note to let everyone know that the breakups seen on the HDTV feed today were from the network. The local DTV stations were not at fault. The problem was the result of a phone line problem which they hope to resolve by tomorrow.

Also, all CBS O&O's should be 'on board' with the HD feed for the rest of the tournament, including tomorrow.

I would really like to know how a phone line could cause the problems I have seen. For ex, many times when the ball was rolling there was a white pixel trail behind it... sort of like the "mouse trails" that can be enabled on a PC/laptop. This stinks of compression problems (not transmission dropouts, which I think were also happening).

Every DVD I watch is MPEG encoded, so MPEG compression cannot be blamed directly. But there is something with the compression happening there. I think.

Let's see if it occurs again today.

For the record, the video was stellar, even with the slight video anomolies.

I would imagine phone lines could have everything to do with the problem. Remeber DTV is digital... and can be sent via extremely fast data (phone) lines. If CBS Master Control was having data line problems between New York and Augusta (i.e. dropped packets), then the data stream would have been interrupted, resulting in picture freezes and distortion.

Not being a TV engineer, I can't answer that.

I can tell you my information came from Bob Ross, the CBS VP of East Coast operations. Bob has been an AVS member for over a year, and has always been straight with us. I see no reason to question this information, regardless of your lack of understanding.

Perhaps one of the more technically inclined here can enlighten us as to the specifics of phone line problems as they relate to HDTV transmission/production/distribution.
