That was the plan, but something came up that weekend for me.

Hey Nuance,
any thoughts on seeing if Jim or Dennis have a speaker switch to make swapping easier at the GTG?

Just thought it might be handy

I believe Dennis has a preamp - I'll ask him.

Much appreciated!
I want to publicly state that I dont want Terry overseeing all the music selection unless everyone loves Patricia Barber

LOL - Good one!

Dennis owns a custom made piece that can level match and then you can switch back and forth. It would be slightly tedious to keep setting this up and level matching for each new speaker. And then are we leveling against a standard pair the entire time?

Anyways, he will be along eventually and maybe it can be used for this purpose if we/you agree to any known limitations up front. It is a cool device for sure. We used it to select the midrange driver for the SoundScapes a few years back.

I've written Nuance about this. I certainly wouldn't want us to use it for the main listening. Not only would it slow things down, but it wouldn't be fair to the other speaker designers to have impressions shaped by an unknown device and under conditions that could discourage sustained listening. It's also kind of complicated and not trivial to ship or hook up. I might be willing to have it used at the very end after impressions are firmed up, and for people who are interested and still awake and sober. Actually, I'm the only one who would have to be sober.

I see. Thanks dennis, you are probably right. I had thought if it was a simple procedure it might be worth investigating. Looking forward to meeting you!

Personally, I don't see how that's remotely useful unless you are comparing specifics. Each speaker should be as ideally placed in the room as possible. Anything less is just a waste of time. Having two speakers setup side-by-side is far from ideal. Special care would need to take place so that both pairs were exactly the same distance from the same sweet spot. We are already on a very tight schedule. I don't think we have time for all this extra stuff. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

It really is only useful for one or, at most, 2 people at a time. And it's a lot of hassle.

Sorry guys - I meant to post what Dennis told me but things picked up at work. I'm glad he posted, though. Thanks Dennis!

Terry,
After hearing Dennis' reply I figured to leave well alone.

Have we decided upon how to pick the tracks yet? I imagine a selected few then cycle through each on the different speakers?

Still up in the air. Not sure exactly what to do yet.

Apologies to all - for some reason I was not receiving emails alerting to new posts.

I think the charity donation idea is a wonderful one and would be more than willing to contribute. As far as ability to sit in the "sweet spot", I am just tickled to be able to attend and hear so many great speakers as well as meet everyone that I would be fine being stuck in a corner the entire time!

If I might make a couple track suggestions (just suggestions - again, I am just happy to be there!)

Angel - Sarah Mclachlan
Who Wants to Live Forever - Queen
The White Tree - Lord of the Rings / Return of the King soundtrack

Terry - I am PMing you my email address now. Hopefully, that catches me back up!

Keep it simple. It's your event. You have tracks you like to play and play and play. Use those. Don't make your life miserable. I usually put together a playlist of my most recent tunes that I like (I don't repeat tunes if I can from previous events) and put it on repeat and walk away from the room. Only later on in the day do the regulars get to playing what they want as folks begin to leave.

When I make a playlist I try to put in something with bass, female vocal, male vocal, opera, symphony, strings, guitars, a Capella, ballad, fast paced, no country or rap allowed! This is intended to demonstrate the full capabilities of my Salk speakers and to hopefully hit a happy note with all the attendees. Can't please them all.

In your case you have floorstanders and bookshelf's coming so we should hear differences in their capabilities. But a good tune is a good tune and giving us a shot at it on different speakers should be fun.

Oh, I used to have little contests and here is one: Once you have your tracks decided upon, give everyone a sheet of paper and the most complete list of all the track songs and artists wins a door prize. Most can get close on the artist but most will fail the track name so it is fun to see them scramble.

Oh, and as an addition to my previous post, I would like to donate to Mrs. TJHUB's favorite charity as well - having that many people over in one day is a lot of work and I appreciate her efforts and graciousness as well.

Very cool, ALMFamily. Thanks man!

TJ, what did you think of that second FTP?
Just wanted to say hi. Didn't realize there were so many Wisconsin residents on here.

I agree with Terry on this 100%. As a matter of fact I'm going to play Cafe' Blue next. I wish I could make it out to WI for the GTG. But it looks like an excellent group of speakers and people attending. I look forward to the thoughts of all of those that will be there.

I only bounced through it twice as I've been very busy lately. I intend to go through it in detail tonight/tomorrow. What I did hear had a lot of really great stuff. I wish I lived closer to you, I'd make certain we were the greatest of friends. I'd love to hear more.

Good. The last track was just for fun, cuz it's about music. It was not intended to be high fidelity in the least.

Erin and I are still in!

Brandon - did you decide when and where we plan to meet in a couple weeks?
Brandon: You need to add:

Gregg (Terry's friend)
Kevin (Terry's friend - probable)

Oh yeah, I still plan on being there as well.

Thanks, I updated my original post with attendees. I also added Jeff and Kathy, whom are from Milwaukee and requested to attend. With that said, I think we're at our limit now... I don't want to turn anyone down, but I also want everyone to get a chance to really hear every speaker at the GTG. What are your thoughts?
