SE WI Tower speaker GTG - Page 24

I'll definitely check out her Companion disc.

IMO, which I know does not count for much since I won't be there, people need to hear something they are familiar with for good comparisons.

No Jack Johnson? Blasphemy Seriously though, I dont really care what we listen to at the GTG. I enjoy well recorded music either way as long as we have a variety. I think we should put together a list and let people vote and like you suggested have some of the speaker builders offer a track they prefer as well.

I think thats the easy part, the tough part is deciding how many tracks to include in the set.

I think we are overhthinking this issue

Sometimes you just can't elevate some people's listening above crap like Jack Johnson. I'd never admit I listen to Jack Johnson on a public forum, even if I could stand his music... Thanks Nuance for saying "no" to any Jack Johnson music at the GTG.

I DO NOT want to pick the music. This is OUR GTG at my house. I'd love to make everyone happy, but I don't think that will be possible. I do think that if we put our heads together, we can come up with a list of incredible tracks that everyone can enjoy.

I admit that my favorite idea is to make Jim and Dennis pick the music. This seems like the right thing to do, and it takes the pressure off of me. I think Nuance needs to get on this immediately!

Anyone like Jude Cole besides Keifer Sutherland and me. Also, Carrie rodriguez.

Oi, is my musical background limited. I think I spent way too much time listening to 80's glam rock and one-hit wonders.....

You don't really think anyone believes that do you?

IMHO, evaluating speakers should be about feeding them the highest quality source material available. We all have less than stellar recordings at home, that's certainly not what I want to hear while trying to evauate what quality speakers are capable of.

Unfortunately, most of the tracks I would like to hear are somewhat lengthy, so I understand if they aren't practical. That all said, and out of the way, I have a couple I'd like to suggest . They are all direct to DSD recordings, all instrumental with a wide frequency spectrum, and great dynamics.

Spyro Gyra, on the "Good To Go-Go" album, track 10 "A Winter Tale"
Monty Alexander, "My America", track 3 "Love and Happiness"
McCoy Tyner "Illuminations", track 3 "New Orleans Stomp"

I have little doubt that organizing, and executing an event such as this is no small endeavor, I look forward to what will surely be a great meet!

I agree though, well recorded music really displays a speakers strengths and weaknesses.

Hey B,
Do you think we should ask Dave, Jim, and Dennis for a track they would like to select for the GTG? I think that would be cool.

I have been highly conflicted about posting concerning the methodology of the upcoming event, and decided to speak what's on my mind.

Being that I'm a firm believer in scientific methods, and understanding the nature of unconscious bias, I'm concerned about the ability of the listeners not to have a preference for what they own. As much as I would like to believe I can be unbiased, not only is that quite likely not realistic, beyond that I'm so familiar with the sound of the speakers that I own, that as well might be cause for what sounds "best" to me.

Does anyone else share my concerns for a sighted test, as opposed to blind testing? As I've never attended an event such as this, I can only hope my thoughts are received in the spirit in which they are offered. Not intending to be disruptive in any way, it has been on my mind quite a bit.

I have no idea what you mean PM.

Clearly the Salks will "win" hands down!

Seriously, and don't call me Shirley, I know and love the Salk sound, why would I otherwise be headed toward my 6th pair in 5 years?!? But since I'm "married" and not "looking", I am going in with a completely unbiased approach to objectively listen and, for the most part, keep my mouth shut to not bias those who are actually "looking for love", if you get my drift, if I make any sense at all, you know.

That's also how I feel. I've heard all but two pairs of the speakers that will be in attendance (three if Ryan is able to attend and bring the Cirrus). I'm not in the market for speakers and have nothing to prove, so I too will keep my mouth shut around others. I'm not even planning on posting my impressions until the others have, as not to unintentionally bias anyone. I admit that I will speak with Jim, Pete, Terry, Brandon, my wife, Aaron and Patrick about what I think right away, but it'll be hush hush and shouldn't matter because we've all heard the speakers already (mostly anyway); I'll try to keep quiet around those that haven't heard most of the speakers yet, though.

A blind test would be nice, but very difficult to pull off. If we were to go blind we'd have to go all in and do it "right," else the results would be even more moot than a sighted/biased event. I'm all for suggestions, though, and if the majority want to "go blind" I am sure we could figure out something. This would mean that a few individuals wouldn't get to listen at all, though, as they'd have to run the blind testing procedure instead. Ultimately, it's Terry's home, so he'd make the final decision on that, though.

My personal opinion is to keep it pretty laid back. If anything, I think a blind test would make the subjective discussion more controversial. I think it is just wise to make sure everyone has a right to their opinion and that is all they are...opinions. From the recent KC sub meets, it was obvious the blind test became even more controversial than the previous non-blind test.

So it's considered bad form to shout out "OMG, THAT WAS AWESOME!!!" after your faves play a track ?

While I agree with the sentiment, and wish not to belabor the point, as well as understanding the difficulty of blind testing, it would help with preconceptions which are impossible to fully disregard. I'll be happy with whatever the format ends up being, just not certain of my ability to remain objective. I'm "Shirley" looking forward to hearing the speakers, and meeting the ladies, and gentlemen attending!

We can all say we are un-biased, but in that regard, we can't speak for ourselves. That is like allowing someone to grade their own test. You can't trust them until someone else grades the test.

The bottom-line...you like what you like, have good discussions, and have fun.

You're right. And to add to that, we can "say" we aren't biased, but I think we all are in some way, shape or form. It's inevitable. Perhaps the next SE WI GTG will be un-sighted; I'll need some patient volunteers to help me put that one together, though. I've done it before, but it wasn't easy and the participants were crabby afterwards, and mood can affect speaker judgement, so...

And now, step aside and allow the noob the podium!

My next speaker purchase will be only the 2nd set of speakers I will have ever owned - the 1st being a set of Emp Tek e55Ti b-stock towers I bought a couple months ago for a living room system. As some may be aware, I am currently building my HT which will be my 1st (and likely last) dedicated HT build.

I know I should be solely focused on the sound, but for me, the aesthetics of the speaker will also bear a part in my ultimate decision for my 1st set of HT speakers so I would prefer to have a "sight-seen" GTG. I am sure when upgradeitis comes along I will get past my "must be attractive" shortcomings and focus solely on the sound.

Also, as this is a "looking for love" (love that turn of phrase - well chosen!) trip for me, I will say I don't mind hearing impressions - it will help me to become better at auditioning speakers if I understand what those who have done this a few times are looking for and what stands out for them. In the end, it is still my decision so I will base it on what I like best and hearing other's opinions won't color that for me.

Noob out!

Uhhhhhmmmm.... So no one told you about the ancient "Rite Of Passage" ritual required of noobs, and the black hood you''ll be required to wear? Not to worry, the bruises and lash marks heal fairly quickly. These Wisconsinites have some barbaric customs.

I'm actually good with the "let the chips fall, bias and all" philosophy! It should be about sharing common interests, and having a good time, rather than trying to be something which will just generate controversy.

Do you recommend a hotel in town?

And what time would you want us there Sat. AM to set up the speakers? It could be 10 PM Friday before we roll into town. Hopefully we can get there by 9, but we are not scheduled to pick up the 10's in Milwaukee until 7 PM due to their schedule.

The AmericInn or Holiday Inn?

The GTG kicks off at 10:00 a.m., and I'll be to Terry's by 9:15 or so just to help prep and what not. I am sure anytime after that would be fine.

As long as there is a slot to drop them into and a temporary place to unload. It's not like they need to warm up!
