April fools: The best april fools joke ever!

I remember years back in a major electronics magazine, new products section (April edition), where National Semiconductor had this little blurb for their newly developed DED (Darkness Emitting Diode).... had a caption picture of what looked like an LED that someone had painted black. Fooled everyone, at least for a little while! They claimed they got a ridiculous number of telephone calls asking where the item could be purchased.

My old sales guy had a guy at the last company that he worked for that was a royal PITA, so on April Fools he unscrewed the mouthpiece of his old style telephone and dropped a cooked prawn in, put the mic back in and screwed the cap back on. It took about 4 days for the prawn to start rotting, and of course it was only the guy that could smell something really foul, but had no idea where it was coming from. After a week, the smell went away.

I pulled one over on my sales guy a few years later. We were both playing the 'new' pinball game that came with one of the Windows versions, so I called him at home and told him that I found out something very cool with the game: Depending on how you tilted the monitor, it would affect how fast the ball moved on the screen, as it changed the amount of gravity of the ball.

He spent the next 2 hours that night playing pinball, and reported back the next day that I was right. Of course, there's no correlation between the game and the monitor, and he was the type of guy that rarely fell for anything, so I felt really good about that one.

City of Providence Closes For Day (1986)
Carolyn Fox, a disc jockey for WHJY in Providence, Rhode Island, announced that the 'Providence Labor Action Relations Board Committee' had decided to close the city for the day. She gave out a number for listeners to call for more information. The number was that of a rival station, WPRO-AM. Reportedly hundreds of people called WPRO, as well as City Hall and the police. Even more called into their offices to see if they had to go into work. WHJY management later explained that it had never imagined its joke would have such a dramatic impact on the city.

I was working construction in Providence that day and remember that there was very little traffic on the highways.

Many years (decades?) ago, a local TV station did a news piece about our city selling many of the artworks - statues, stained glass windows and such - that decorate our city hall, a 100+ year old Romanesque style building that is on the national historical register... in order to generate revenue.

This was done at a time long before many major cities faced their current financial crises, so the piece was jaw-dropping at first, then humorous when one realized that they couldn't possibly be serious... especially when the piece ended with plans to turn the building's courtyard into a public swimming pool.

With the current furor over state and municipal budget crises, if this story were to air today there would likely be protest marches!

a Local news channel did a segment on a baseball player who was discovered somewhere in Africa. This individual was expected to be the greatest pitcher that was ever found. He had a average of like 115 m/h pitch with pin point accuracy.

This pitcher was found in a remote village in the middle of some African jungle. he was a hunter for his tribe and his method of hunting was throwing rocks and animals and knocking them out with 1 blow. I wish I could show you the footage I just about pissed in my pants watching it. Birds falling out of the skies, monkeys falling off trees antelopes toppling over. I swear it was great.

They kept on going with interviews of key baseball officials, owners press etc. in the end they let out on it being an April fool's joke. Totally kick ass
