Yes

However, like I said not all but some Netflix movies like "Limitless" do have audio encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1, but it will be decoded by the S780 and then output as uncompressed multi-channel PCM to your receiver.

Because its multi-channel PCM you will see PCM on your Receiver but you will not see "PCM 2.1" because its actually multi-channel PCM e.g. 5.1 surround sound. I know this sounds confusing since normally you would expect to see Dolby Digital light up on your Receiver but this is in fact the case with some devices when streaming Netflix videos.

When you can ...try streaming the movie "Limitless" from Netflix on your S780 and then really listen to your speakers --you'll hear the surround sound effect in each speaker.

Yeah I know but it not unlimited streaming like Netflix i to buy each movie or rent each movie. That is why Vudu makes me mad they are nothing like Netflix.

Let me see if I understand what you are saying correctly, I have a Bose Lifestyle V35 even though my receiver says LPCM 2.0 while watching "Limitless" is not really LPCM 2.0 but 5.1?

I wish there was a way also to tell which movies are also like "Limitless" on Netflix.

I understand. Two very different business models. You can't beat Netflix's unlimited movies for such a low monthly fee. Was just trying to give you some more evidence that the S780 does process Dolby Digital from streaming video...

BTW, Vudu (owned by Walmart) offers full 1080P and Dolby Digital + 5.1/7.1 and the latest DVD Movie releases. Netflix and the others offer HD is 720P. But like you said you have to pay-per-view with Vudu.

Normally you can see if a Movie is broadcast in 5.1 or not in the description.

Try this.. On your S780 check the BD Audio Mix setting --if set to "on" turn this to "off" and then stream the Limitless movie from Netflix. Let me know if you see a difference on the Bose Lifestyle V35 display.

"(When the BD Audio Mix is set to “off” the audio is not down-mixed and the full DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD signal is output through HDMI, allowing your "capable" receiver to perform the decoding.)"

Interesting will try this later tonight but I am pretty sure it is on and get back.

I tried this and streamed the movie "Limitless" from Netflix and only got 2 ch PCM. Do I have something set up wrong. In my current setting, my processor is decoding the audio and I'm getting Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio from my Blurays and DVD's just fine. I just can't seem to get multi-channel audio from Netflix with the S780.

The only other thing I can offer up ( other than what I explained previously) is ask you to listen to the speakers--if you have a 5.1 system with a capable Receiver its very easy to tell the difference between 2.1 and 5.1.

Sony is still using its custom Netflix gui while most others have moved on to the HTML5 version. I couldn't get any 5.1 last night either. Also, HD movies aren't listed as HD but again, I believe that's do in part to the player's custom Netflix gui limitations more than anything. Maybe this information is deeper into the description somewhere?

I was on a call with Netflix last night and again this a.m. apparently something is wrong on their site and they are currently not displaying the 5.1 description in the movie descriptions as they normally do ( that's how i know Limitless is 5.1) I checked again this morning and I still don't see 5.1 listed. (BTW the new True Grit movie is another 5.1) They told me this was a temporary problem....

Anybody know if Qriocity/Video Unlimited from Sony streams in 5.1? I rented a couple of HD flicks from there and only got 2.0

Thanks for the heads up. I will have to check other devices with Netflix I have which are many.

To date I haven't been able to get anything other than 2.0 from Qriocity/Video Unlimited--which is too bad since I do enjoy their movie library. I did notice that their MIB 3 movie trailer seems to be a better quality HD maybe even 1080P or at least better than their normal HD 720P)

Movie quality on Qriocity is definitely better than Netflix (they advertise 1080p). I also like their titles better than Netflix. However no 5.1 sounds is a definite bummer.

Didn't even know that service was up and running yet. Had a chance to compare it to VUDU's quality?

IMO--Vudu's DHX movie service with both full HD video 1080P and Dolby Digital Plus is superior to any other current streaming service on the S780s.

Many of the major manufacturers offer a specific " region free" model but in general at a premium over the regional models.

Tried it and nothing really, I think this has to do between Sony and Netflix. Well we have to wait and see what happens since Netflix is still going through a difficult time with streaming movies and bunch of people complaining for raising the price I doubt anytime soon we will see anything new from Netflix. Hopefully Netflix also now overseas would help to improve on U.S. end but I doubt it.

I am using the s780 as a media server, streaming from a readynas pro6 to a Marantz av7005. After much experimenting, I am able to stream mpeg with great quality but am having an issue with audio. I rip on an intel iMac using makemkv. The s780 didn't play the mkv format. I then used handbrake to convert it from mkv container to m4v format. The video plays well, however the audio is 2 ch - no surround. I verified that handbrake is encoding the audio correctly.
Is this a problem with the 780? The user manual is nebulous when it comes to adequately describing how it handles streaming from a dlna nas.

Thanks.

Update from my post last night: I was able to stream the video - preamp displayed the feed as 2ch AAC format. The preamp automatically set itself to a 2 ch mode (stereo or direct)but when I changed to 5.1 I got full surround. So...this worked well. The question remains: why does the feed get reported as 2 channel by the BR player?
Pressing the audio button on the remote control changed the display on the screen to read 5.1.

Seems to work well now!

The other option is to check to see if your Receiver can simulate or "virtualize" Netflix 2.0 input to output in 5.1.

Where do you guys have the color space conversion set to? YCbCr 4:2:2, 4:4:4 or AUTO? I read that 4:2:2 is the proper setting, anyone have suggestions on this?

I believe the standard for HD material is the YCbCr setting, but don't quote me.

The BDP-S780 Operating Instructions recommends "Auto" ( page 27) Looks like it depends on the TV type...

"Auto: Automatically detects the connected
TV type, and switches to the matching
color setting"
I always wished it would tell you what the current setting was when it was in AUTO just so I could know. Not in the INFO display but maybe in the menu to the side or something. I've kept mine on AUTO.

Agreed. The best I could do with my limited knowledge on this subject is to trust the recommended setting.

For any that might be interested to learn more about Chroma (YCbCr 4:2:2, 4:4:4 ) subsampling or no subsampling see this url:
