I just ordered this player through Amazon for $179 with FREE shipping. I was really on the fence with this purchase due to some bad luck with Sony products in the past but Im crossing my fingers it works out for me.

I do have one question though and I think it may have been discussed earlier but not in detail. I have an Onkyo TX SR701 AVR which does NOT have HDMI. The AVR is about 10 years and it works perfect. What am I going to miss out on by not having the ability to get the True HD and DTS HD MA audio formats through my 5.1 setup? A new AVR is not out of the question but I dont want to waste my money if this Sony player will decode the audio on the DVD and at least give me something that my current AVR can use. This setup is in a family/living room and we only watch about 2 movies a week. Moving this stuff downstairs to the big room is not out of the question down the road either but that will have to wait until I can figure out which speaker setup I want to use.

I hope it works for you also. I retired mine after 4 blackouts during Sound of Music Blu Ray and refusal to play 3 other Blu Rays. I had the most up to date firmware.

Clearly you have a defective unit or USB device. Just curious why didn't you have the unit serviced under warranty?

I think you will be okay with Dolby Digital & DTS. You are correct you will not get True HD or DTS HD if you are using an optical cable--but I say give it a try. DD and DTS is still a nice sound experience. $179 is a GREAT price on this unit BTW.

Have you already seen this article on CNET?

Hello All

I just got a new S780 to use in my living room. I am unsure how to set the player to bitstream so that my onkyo receiver can decode the HD Signal. Can some one please help me with this?

Thanks

Hello: Set the BD Audio Mix to "off" ( in Audio Settings) on the S780 and this will send Bitstream to your Receiver.

This worked.

Thanks a ton.

I have an Onkyo TX SR 701 and I just hooked my S780 and my receiver plays back the audio in DTS using an optical cable. I have not changed any settings from default yet.

Speaking of settings, can anyone offer and suggestions on audio and video settings? I'm not using 3d at this time and my AVR is only capable of Dolby Digital and DTS.
I also made an attempt to go browse the apps and using the remote to type was pissing me off so I quit. I take it that I will need to set myself up with some sort of wireless keyboard but can I just buy one that has a USB receiver and use the port in the front of the unit?
Set everything to bitstream and enable DD and DTS and you'll be good to go. I find the iPhone/iPad remote app from sony great for searches. A USB/wireless keyboard won't work.

Thanks. I will look into those settings tommorow if I get a chance. I do have an iPhone so I will lok for that app and give it a try

Hello All

I set up my Sony Blu Ray Player to use wireless connection to access Netflix. Now as we finished hard wiring the living room, we tried to connect using wired and all we get is failed internet connection. I have tried other equipments on the rack like Onkyo Radio, SqueezeBox and they all work fine with wired connection.

Can any one help me with this situation?

Thanks

Yes--connecting between the two wired/wireless is normally pretty easy/quick.

If you've already gone through the "wired setup" connection prompts on the S780 and it still doesn't connect and you already confirmed this Ethernet connection does work with other equipment , try resetting the player...hold the power button down for 30 seconds until the player resets. Once the player is powered back on, then try the wired setup steps/prompts again making sure to chose "automatic" so you don't have to input any info.

If the above doesn't work you might want to put in a call with Sony customer support ( I don't recommend their on-line chat service)and ask them to troubleshoot the connection. It may be something as simple as manually inputting the DNS info. (E.g., manually entering Primary DNS on the S780 to 8.8.8.8 and the secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4)

I probably was sleepy doing this late last night. I figured this morning that i did not plug the ethernet cable to the back of Blu Ray Player at all.

It was pretty stupid of me. Thanks again.

Ok well at least you are connected!

BTW if you have some time try out the Vudu app on the S780. They offer free two-minute movie previews in full 1080P called HDX. Their HDX streaming quality is superior to the other streaming video apps on the S780.

Thinking about buying this today, just wanna make sure it's a good deal. Thanks!

Sure you want to share that price with the rest of us on this forum that paid MUCH more? "It's a great deal" typically they drop their prices on the previous year's model just before they start shipping their new models. So in general a good time to buy while supplies last.

New 780 owner here. My 1st streaming device. Didn't really buy for streaming but I must say I like it more than anticipated. I temporarily have it hooked up with component cables to my tube TV in the bedroom. Waiting for my XBR TV to show up. I don't have the speed for HD streaming but my WiFi signal is good. I really like the Crackle channel. Wish it didn't have so many commercials, always the same clips! I've only thrown in 1 BR and I will say it can be a little noisy! Will have to try some more BR's. A little slow on the connecting and checking internet and loading. This is my 1st streamer so I'm not sure this is normal? I'm guessing it's pretty normal to some extent? BTW I really enjoyed the movie Defendor on Crackle today.

Yes--the S780 is one of the better blu-ray and streaming devices in 2011 and will integrate very nicely with your new XBR too via Bravia Sync if you use HDMI cables

Normally the disk load and operation is fairly quiet--however, there have been a few reports of noisy disk loads on this forum but they seem to be isolated incidents--This happened to me once and as soon as I ejected and re-loaded the disk everything was back to the normal quiet ops.

Also, a slow internet connection ( even though you have four/five bars signal strength) could be the cause of what you are describing as "slow...connecting and checking internet and loading". Because there is so much content/entertainment to stream via this device--you may want to consider investing in a faster internet connection if you can. In the meantime, if you can connect the S780 with a Ethernet cable or a powerline network adapter instead of wireless you'll maximize the connection performance.

I figured my att dsl speed was probably the problem. Though my WiFi is usually at 4 bars with the split 2nd drop to 3 bars on occasion. I have the 2nd fastest att speed which is suppose to be 3 mbps it never seems to get faster than about 2.5 and drops down on occasion.

Mine seems to even make clunking sounds on turn on and and searching disc and can even hear it spinning BR during movie, not real loud but almost a high pitch sound. Watching a BR now and 30 min. in the high pitch is gone. This is in my bedroom and not very far from me. Louder than any other player I've had in my bedroom. I'm sure I'll get used to it over time. Guess I'll just turn up the volume!

So what is the minimum speed needed for HD streaming. I think att dsl speed only goes to 6 mbps. AS far as I'm concerned I pay top much for what I have now and seems to go up all the time!

Those sounds you describe are not normal. There may be something wrong with either the Disk or the player itself. Any chance you can test with another disk DVD or Bluray?

5-10 Mbps is the recommended for HD streaming. Closer to 10 the better. You can use Sony's Video Unlimited app or the VUDU app on the S780 to test if your internet connection will support HD or just Standard Definition.

Does anyone know if a USB gigabit nic or adapter can be used with either of the ports? I f a wireless one can, why not a gigabit?

I don't think so. The s780's wireless is built-in. So neither USB ports, front or back are used for wireless devices.

Good news about mkv streaming over network..... I think....

I know that normally this player can only play mkv via USB and not streaming.

However....

I tried the dnla server called " Nero mediahome" and told it NOT to transcode.

Thought I would try a mkv file for fun, and too my surprise it saw the file and played it. It was a HD file with DTS.

I had tried in past to use mezzmo and twonky media server with no luck on mkv.

So this seems promising.

Cool
Serviio works fine with mkv on sony without transcoding too, and it's free.

24p is not supported on any of the Sony players for VOD/USB/DNLA content. Its unclear if its supported on the 2012 players ... seems doubtful since they haven't mentioned it yet. It is supported on the new 2012 panasonic players (220, 320, etc).
Ok, is anyone else having trouble with Hulu+ ? The interface comes up, I pick a program, it plays the first "commercial" or two, then it just freezes with the blue splash showing. It never returns, and when I try and power down, it freezes and flashes "see you" on the player display. I then have to un plug the power and plug it back in to get it to power up.

Does the same thing wired or wireless, amazon plays fine.

Are you saying that when we stream VUDU thru our player we aren't getting 24fps?
