Piccolo: If you think you are experiencing a network issue connecting the S780 to your home network ( e.g. firewall/permissions) and your phone, its probably best for you to contact Sony Customer support directly and ask them to troubleshoot and walk you through this issue ( could be a number of things) . If you think its a problem with connecting your new HTC VIVID android 4 phone to your network ( this is a brand new phone model), then maybe a call to your phone service can help you as well. Just got this player today and I have a few questions:

1) What does Cinema Conversion Mode do exactly?

2) Should I select 1080p res or auto?

3) YCbCr/RGB - Auto or something else?

4) HDMI Deep Color Output - Auto or something else? Tried selecting 12bit & 10bit and can't tell the difference

5) Audio DRC - changed from Auto to off - is this accurate? I don't want to compress the sound in any way

6) BD Audio MIX - turn off to bitstream sound to my receiver?

BTW, I have a Samsung PS50C6500 TV.

I am using a Dlink Dir-651 router, according to the DLNA website it is not listed. do you this can make a difference?

Hello:
You can download the operating manual (pdf) by cutting & pasting this into your browser:
www.docs
.sony.com/release/BDPS780.pdf
( see page 27 for the above)

1) What does Cinema Conversion Mode do exactly?
Cinema Conversion Mode
Auto: Normally select this. The player
automatically detects whether the
material is video-based or film-based,
and switches to the appropriate
conversion method.
Video: The conversion method suited for
video-based material will always be
selected regardless of the material.

2) Should I select 1080p res or auto?
Auto

3) YCbCr/RGB - Auto or something else?
Auto
YCbCr/RGB (HDMI)
Auto: Automatically detects the connected
TV type, and switches to the matching
color setting.
YCbCr (4:2:2): Outputs YCbCr 4:2:2 video
signals.
YCbCr (4:4:4): Outputs YCbCr 4:4:4 video
signals.
RGB: Outputs RGB video signals.

4) HDMI Deep Color Output - Auto or something else? Tried selecting 12bit & 10bit and can't tell the difference
Auto

HDMI Deep Color Output
Auto: Normally select this.
12bit/10bit: Outputs 12bit/10bit video signals
when the connected TV is compatible
with Deep Color.
Off: Select this when the picture is unstable
or colors appear unnatural.

5) Audio DRC - changed from Auto to off - is this accurate? I don't want to compress the sound in any way
Off or Auto

6) BD Audio MIX - turn off to bitstream sound to my receiver?
Yes

BTW, I have a Samsung PS50C6500 TV.

Thanks for your help! I have the manual but still wasn't sure what to do because my old LG 390 didn't have any of those options.

I think you mentioned in an earlier post that you were able to stream from your PC to the S780? If so then your router is set up to stream over your home network.

If you can't stream anything make sure you Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking on your Dir-651 router

Ha ! These few settings are just the beginning. Once you've had this player a while you will realize all kinds of menus and settings/sub-settings. I think I think have found them all so far but wouldn't be surprised to find something else

Video Settings • Picture Quality Mode:

“Auto,” “Custom1,” and
“Custom2” are available
only for HDMI
connections.
• Texture Remaster: Adjusts
the sharpness and detail of
the edges.
• Super Resolution:
Improves the resolution.
• Smoothing: Reduces onscreen
banding by
smoothing gradations on
flat areas.
• Contrast Remaster:
Automatically arranges the
black and white levels so
that the screen is not too
dark and the image is
modulated.
• Clear Black: Adjusts the
display of the dark

shading is not suppressed;
it allows beautifully
reproduced black tones.

Here's a bit more from Crutchfield:
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158BDPS...=T#details-tab

  • Picture Quality Mode: You can select from 3 preset pictures settings (Standard, Brighter, Theater) for different lighting environment.
  • FNR: Reduces the random noise appearing in the picture.
  • BNR: Reduces the mosaic-like block noise in the picture.
  • MNR: Reduces minor noise around the picture outlines (mosquito noise)
  • I/P Noise Reduction: Improves the picture quality of Internet entertainment.
Cinema Conversion Mode: The Sony Blu-ray player offers two Cinema Conversion Modes - Auto and Video.
  • Auto: The player automatically detects whether the material is video-based or film-based, and switches to the appropriate conversion method.
  • Video: The conversion method suited for video-based material will always be selected regardless of the content.

Yeah, this player is pretty loaded with features. I could not believe how many Internet options this thing has. My old LG only had YouTube lol.

BTW, forgot to ask about Picture Quality Mode - should I leave it on Standard or do the Custom modes and features like Texture Remaster, Super Resolution etc. improve the picture even further?

Yes this is correct, didn't think of that. I can stream between PC and S780 also between Phone and Pc. so it must be something else. I contacted sony help desk 2 times and they are not much help.

Did you call into Sony or try to use their on-line chat service? ( Their on-line chat service is very basic and not much help at all)-- I recommend you call directly if you can--if first guy cant help you then ask for level-two support.

BTW are you able to connect the phone to your wireless network?

I'd go standard to begin with. ( Blu-ray PQ on this player is very nice) The custom settings are numerous--perhaps too much so. I don't really use them anymore--unless I get one of those really grainy Blu-ray remasters. ( texture re-master seems to help ever so slightly to smooth out the grain.)

If you are not careful you can get more involved in these settings then actually enjoying the movie! But it is fun to explore.....

*If you are into 3D then do learn the 3D features/functions as these settings can have significant impact on the brightness and depth of the 3D experience

This may be too basic--but worth checking out anyway ( applies to most Sony devices with "rendering function"

Yeah, I'll just keep it on Standard for now. Don't wanna smooth out the grain or anything like that. I love grain!

Does anyone know where I can find the Euro version of M07.R.0579 firmware?

I installed the new firmware but don't want any of that Cinavia crap so I wanna downgrade it if that's even possible.

You cannot revert to previous firmware(s) on the Sony Sx80's (at least not as far as we know, there is no known method).

Well that sucks. Guess I should've waited before updating.

Hey guys, is the player supposed to be this loud while the disc is loading? Once the movie starts the player is pretty quiet (especially after the first few chapters) but when I insert the disc and it starts loading the menu or whatever the loading sound is significantly louder than my old LG. Is that normal?

One more question: does the Downmix option have any effect on HDMI audio or is that only for Digital Out etc? My player is connected via HDMI to my receiver which supports every lossless codec so should I set this to Stereo or Surround?

Anyway, the player is amazing so far. I didn't think there'd be any difference in PQ between this and my old LG but there certainly is. The contrast in particular seems much better. The whites don't bloom and the blacks seem deeper.

Yes for HDMI. IMO you should do a surround sound test between the two options. I've got my S780 set at surround and seems to work fine with my Denon Receiver. I get plenty of surround sound effect out of my Blu rays.

There are plenty of surround sound test clips on Youtube you can stream to the S780 and use to test which Downmix configuration sounds best for your components. Here are a few to get you started:

I got it working!!!

I phoned Sony and HTC, not really helpful I must say. HTC even had me reset my phone 
So out of desperation I started playing around whit het network and connected the S780 to the network using cable instead of wifi, and guess what it worked. Now I can see my S780 with my phone and the S780 can see the PC. But the Phone does not see the PC (pc is now on wifi). Seems the problem is with the wifi and the phone. If I connect the PC to the network using wire the phone will see the PC.
