Volume Question (HDMI to reciever)

Thread Starter
My OS (Windows 7) has a volume control, Windows 7 Media Center has its own volume control, and finally XBMC running through Windows 7 has its own volume control.

My htpc sends video and audio through HDMI to my Onkyo 608 then out to the display.

What should I have the Windows 7 volume set to? How about XBMC? How about WMC?

I'm worried of introducing distortion on the audio stream if its cranked to high, but not sure if it matters at this point. Any ideas?

If the audio decoders that you use are set to passthrough (and you should) then it doesn't matter what the volume of any of those are set to since all audio processing will be done by your receiver.

PC volume control is attenuation, not amplification, the only way to avoid distortion (infinitesimal as it may be) is to have the volume set to full on the PC, any setting lower than that will be attenuating the original signal, and thus changing or "distorting" it.
