How many speakers in your setup? - Page 4

currently 5.05 (the sub sucks, so I consider it a .05 rather than a .1)
wanting to build a couple surrounds and a sub to make it a 7.1 (probably front height speakers, but we'll see).

Currently 4.0.... I have a center speaker yet to build. Then I'm finishing my newest set of speakers. Though when I redo my theater setup, I'm seriously thinking about going to a 7.1 setup. I'll have a standard 5.1 setup with the rears out of the way, then I'll add the 6th and 7th speakers as ceiling speakers. Since it's just for effects I'm not as worried about timbre matching. And then it's not in the way for the relatively small space.

I think mine will stay at 5.1 for the time being. Just upgraded main speakers and center to Aperion Verus Grand Towers and have SVS PC13-Ultra on the way. I have Def Tech 800 sats as surround speakdes for now--left over from original setup. Don't really want to tax my Onkyo 808 with any more speakers so unless I run dedicated amps, I think I'll be happy with a very good 5.1.

Using a temp sub while waiting for the new SVS PB12–NSD to be released.

I currently have a 5.1 system for the HT room, but if/when I ever upgrade the speakers I will seriously consider 7.1. I will really depend on the type of speakers I want (I prefer identical speakers all the way around, since I listen to lots of 5.1 music), and I don't think tower speakers would work in 7.1 for my room.

Gah, better stop thinking about it, I can't afford a speaker upgrade right now, I just bought a new PJ!

My system is 7.1 but I listen to everything in PLC-II mode.

all original soundtracks in the world (except for less than 5 titles) are in 5.1 or less. The first movie that is in true 7.1 as the director's intended starts with Toy Story 3. Those 7.1 blu-rays are "fake" 7.1 akin to making stereo-mix from a mono soundtrack.

7.1 for me. The first time I watched Forbidden Kingdom with the kids & the owl sound came out the back sourround.My kids spent a couple minutes checking all the corners in the back high & low checking to see if I brought them a pet owl.

Main system is an audio only stereo setup, my HT is 5.1

I just upgraded to 7.1 so I haven't messed around with too many yet, but for most ,films with active surround content (even when mixed in 5.1), it makes a difference. Avatar is a good example. When Jake first goes into the forest, the "envelope" feeling is enhanced with the sound also emminating from behind you. The Ultra Cinema 2 (or whatever it's called) 7.1 software on my Onkyo 806 does a pretty good job of utilizing those extra speakers.

However, the first film I popped in and that is so far the best example I've seen/heard that "takes advantage of the 7.1 speakers" is hands down... The Orphanage.

That film is creepy enough as it is, but having things going bump in the night from behind you, as well as from the sides, makes the experience all that much more enjoyable... and scary.

I also hear good things about Hellboy 2 and Se7en, but, while I have those, I haven't yet tested them out in my 7.1 set up.

A quick search on Blu-Ray.com for 7.1 channel sound turns up 274 matches. Admittedly, many of these are duplicates (e.g., different editions, US vs. Canadian version, etc.). Still, here's a list (without duplicates) just from the first of 14 pages:

5.1 for movies. 2.0 for music. The room is not ideal for 7.1 but it is the only room I can escape to be by myself.

From all the above, only Toy Story 3 is a true 7.1 during the theatrical release. The rest are re-mixed from 5.1 (or less) into 7.1.

If people are so hell bent about staying true to the theatrical presentation (such as original aspect ratio, watching black and white movie in black and white -- and not colourized), why then the double standard in remixing the soundtrack from mono to stereo, from stereo to 5.1, or from 5.1 to 7.1?

as for speakers, i would use standard fronts for 2 channels for ht i'd use lcr's for front and book shelf or similar type speaker for surrounds..

Voted 7.1, but it's actually 7.3, with 2 Vandersteen subs and one floor joist mounted transducer...(so the T-Rex can't sneak up on you without you knowing it)

Speakers for my 7.1 system are as follows:

LS & RS Mirage M-1s (not the M-1si's)
LR & RR Martin Logan Vantage
C Mirage OM-C2
Sub Velodyne 15"

Note: I got the Maggie 20.1s in January and demoted the Mirage's to side surround duty. The Mirages, in turn, bumped the Martin Logans to rear surround duty.

Result? More bass, less boom (most likely because the Maggies are real dipoles rather than bipoles.) Much better.

5.1 because that all my room will accommodate.

In actual practice, I use my system in 2.1, 4.1, or 5.1 depending on what I'm playing.

7.1 all B&W speaker system in my family room. Planning a dedicated home theater room with 11.2, or possibly 13.2, all JTR speaker system.

2.0 using studio monitors

Waiting for the big move across country in 2-6 months to get an AV Receiver and 5.1 speaker set-up, maybe 7.1 if we get a place large enough. Looking forward to actually using/experiencing the DTS Master Audio that most of my Blu-Ray Discs have.

I upgraded to 7.1 about a year ago. I was running 5.1 with an older Sony receiver, 4 Klipsch RB-61s, an old Klipsch center, and a Cerwin 10" sub. I changed to a Dennon 789 AVR, added RF-35s as fronts and a RC-35 center; used the RBs as surround & back; added a MFW 15 sub and a Samsung BR player.

Those changes made a HUGE (I'm talking very significant) improvement to the audio in movies.
