Number of Speakers in a Zone

Hi Folks,

I'm in the process of setting up whole house audio. I need about 6 zones which can be independently playing from a different source or a single source.

The question is around how many speakers I can have per zone. I have four zones that only need a pair of speakers. I have two large rooms where I need about 6 speakers in each room.

Can I have these two rooms each with 3 pairs of ceiling speakers controlled by one volume controller in each room?

I have searched in many forums, but do not know the definitive answer..

Thanx much

the "normal" zone is a set of stereo pair speakers. Multiple pairs of speakers on a single stereo output can combine to lower the over all impedance of the circuit to a point where amplifier damage can occur. Can you use a pair of in-wall speakers in the larger room ? In-walls, firing horizontally can cover more area than in-ceiling units firing at the floor.

For a DIY project, you might contact the folks at HTD.com and see what they recommend. http://www.htd.com/Products/Whole-House-Audio

a ZONE can contain as many speakers as you want as long as the impedance to the amplifier does not drop below the recommended range (often 8ohms). There are many speaker switch devices with impedance matching circuitry that will "trick" the amp into thinking there is only one set of speakers. Some volume controls have this as well.
I would recommend a multi-channel amp (not a 5.1) but a true 8-12 channel amp ( or more than one depending on the volume you require) to run everything just to be safe
