A lot better that terminology thru me for a loop. 5360 just plain bad!
No longer bothers me. That was one of the reasons I no longer
have the 5360. I do notice it sometimes but on a much smaller scale.

hey greg I was wondering how big you can make the screen depending on how far back it is? One reviewer said at 10-12' back you can only do 88" screen?

Just got this projector. It's menu options are MUCH more robust and usable than my experience w/ the Viewsonic Pro8200. Out of box colors are ok but is there any TWEAKERS THREAD for this thing? I need some help w/ best color settings. Anyone?

Quick thoughts after about 15 minutes is it's got good lumen output, decent picture, auto iris was a bit distracting to me, sound was decent enough to use in a pinch or presentation setup. The Viewsonic Pro8200 had a much more distinct "3d" image, it wasn't 3d of course, just that feel of depth to the image. This hasn't exhibited that yet but content has only been 720p thus far.

Projector Reviews just posted a shootout of 8 budget home theater projectors, including the Acer. Although very subjective, the fact that all 8 were compared side by side lends credibility to the conclusion. I was disheartened to see that the Acer scored at the bottom of the heap in most picture quality categories. Being a relatively happy 5360 owner I had high hopes for the 7531D upgrade. One thing that puzzled me a bit was that Black Level was not ranked as its own category. With an auto-iris the Acer may have done well in comparison in this one attribute that many find so important.

I don't give a dime anymore on those kind of reviews.
No pics to support that it was really a side by side shootout.
I don't think that they had all the projectors there but I could be wrong.
Under the umbrella of subjectivity there is alot of nonsens that
reviewers can write, just to make one product look better than another.
To think that reviews from projectorcentral.com or projectorreviews.com
or any other place are objective is plain naive. They obviously avoid to
go through the same routine with every projector they review.
Some times they post an important number like ansi contrast and then fail
to do it on many other projectors. Screenshots are worthless due to variating
exposure and size.... Calibrations of the projectors are sometimes way off....
and and and....

This is frustrating for those who need advise, to put it mildly.

I was wondering if you had any more input to give regarding this projector.
I am seriously considering the jump to a projector and I was thinking about making this one my first projector. I like the price and it seems like it would be a decent choice for getting my feet wet. If you or anyone else has any pertinent feedback regarding this projector please share it, I have another month or two before I make my purchase.

Is it better to trust the opinions of consumer reviews, with wildly different reference points and no ability to compare projectors side by side? In general I find the professional reviews from different sites, and in fact different continents tend to align. When you filter out consumer reviews made during the honeymoon period (a few days after purchase) and those made by individuals with an obvious axe to grind they generally agree with the professionals as well.
Of course the only way to truly know is to live with a projector in your own theater for a few weeks...not usually an option.
Even though I don't take them as complete gospel I'm glad to have the perspective of professional reviews.
Just my naive opinion.

I've got a few hours now on the Acer h7531d. Previous projectors were Acer Ph530 720p and Benq pb6200 1024x768. Each has been a step up from the previous. Shooting onto a 106" screen. Will bump to 120.

This new acer is better in tweaking capablity than the Viewsonic 8200. I had that a few days and just couldn't deal w/ the firmware issues and a really annoying image issue which I can't really describe. So the 8200 went back.

I've never been bothered w/ RBE issues but this newer Acer version I'm seeing more rainbows than ever before. With that said it was really only w/ black/white text and even then after about 5 hours of viewing i seem to be noticing it much less. My wife agrees. So rainbow is there but seems to be diminishing. Running in Economy under User setting...

Auto Iris: I find this extremely annoying. It makes too much noise. It is slow to react and just seems to flicker the image so it's OFF in my house. Nice idea but the real world outcome for me is it's not worth it.

Sinc: Having issue w/ PS3 through a 5xHDMI switch. Cables good but PS3 can't sinc w/ that switch but DVR can. Looks like I may have to go direct connect w/ PS3 but first I'll see if some PS3 setting can clear things up. Hope so, I don't want to wire that up.

Overall: Decent with little to be upset with in the price range. It's pretty bright but not quite as bright as the Viewsonic. The viewsonic's image was sharper but flawed in other ways that left it unwatchable. The Acer looks nice... that's just how it is. I give it a "B" grade. Maybe if there was a tweakers thread or someone w/ some calibration experience could dial it in and report it here it would move to an "A". Until then... it's just very nice. I should be enjoying this for a couple years.

Enjoy your 7531... it's nice.

The "really annoying image issue" that you had difficulty identifying with the Viewsonic was likely the excessive digital noise noted in the Projector Shoot out linked above.
Thank you for your review of the Acer. It very much aligns with the professional reviews; a questionable auto-iris but decent enough projector for the price.

digital noise.. yes, that's it. The 8200 was unwatchable for me with its digital noise issue. The 7531 has exhibited it but FAR less. I understand it doesn't bother some folks. If it doesn't bother you than the 8200 would be my choice of these 2 units.

Well, I returned my H7531D. Crazy right? It was decent but I just couldn't dial in the colors to my satisfaction. So, having tried out the 8200 and the 7531.. I punted to the HD20. Well, the latest shootout review at projectorcentral was right. The HD20 is VERY good. It outperforms the 7531 in color accuracy for sure. It shows no signs of rainbow issues that were present a bit w/ the 7531. It shows zero digital noise although the 7531 wasn't bad... it was present at times. The only downside on the HD20 is it's not quite as bright. I would say it's about a 10% hit in perceived lumen output. Fan noise is equal to the 8200 and 7531. I was very reluctant to buy an "older" model thinking it can't stand up against the newer released units but the HD20 is the winner against the 8200 and 7531.

Hd 20 is a lateral move at best as far as color goes the
Acer calibrates quite well or I must be missing something don't think so!
Glad I am not giving up my lumens 10% really where did that number come
from. Still can't see a rainbow can somehow tell me what to look for?

All kiddin a side lot's of good choices I have had zero performance or
reliability issue with the 7531. Still happy with my choice.

Glad you're enjoying the 7531. My 10% comment is only an eye-balled value, nothing scientific. I guess I'm more sensitive to rainbows and noise than some and the little extra cushion the HD20 gives me makes a big difference. For me, I had an easier time calibrating colors on the 20 than the 7531. More than lateral for me but SO glad you're enjoying yours.. and me mine. Projectors are AWESOME!

I have been following this thread for a while and have been seriously considering the Acer. I have limited my search for my first projector to these three http://www.projectorcentral.com/part...=5905&add=5039 Does anyone have any experience the the 3 I am considering? As of now I am leaning toward the HC4000 but part of me is still hoping the Acer can prove to be a dark horse here.

If you have the money buy the Mitsubishi it will be a little better than the Acer
but if they are not side by side you would never know! The Acer is a dark horse
for the money can be had for under 800.00. If you are not sensitive to rainbows.
The other thing is the lamp needs about 100 hours to be free of rainbow noise!
The lamp needs to calm down many people that don't like the ACER rush to judgement to justify there new purchase.

I just bought the 7531D and will do a full out review on it when it comes in two days..pictures..tests...everything....

I come from a samsung 5 series 50 inch plasma 720P for main movie veiwing....and an Eiki 698 projector for doing an outdoor movie night on a 10 foot wall....4:3 XGA resolution 3300 lumens and 500:1 contrast.
Plasma was great, the projector was just OK..both have their purpose in my movie filled netflix and bluray obsessed life


I have a 100 inch screen and a samsung BD1600 player and PC with nvidia 3d out and a lot of 1080P and 720P rips and bluray discs

I will try it inside in light controlled theater and outside for night time veiwing and daytime as well.

Any requests? I will document it all with a canon T2i dslr for some good ideas on what this thing is all about and answer any questions with a long write up

Just downloaded the service manual for the H7530D. Haven't tried it yet.

4-2 Service Mode
1. Turn on the projector
2. Do the following actions sequentially to get into Service Mode
(1) Press "Power", "Left", "Left" and "Menu" buttons sequentially.
(2) Service Mode will be shown.
(3) Choose "Exit" to leave the Service Mode after confirming the configuration.

I like the dynamic black set to medium. Once you get used to the darker blacks it's hard to go back. I guess my only complaint is the noisy iris but I would rather hear the noise and get a better picture. I just got the projector and haven't even watched a full movie yet, just been playing with it. So far I really like it though. Will probably watch a full movie tonight.
It looks like the aperture mid offset setting is the bright setting for dynamic black on medium. So basically you just get less aperture range on medium. I'll have to play with it more to confirm this. In the service menu you can make the aperture go from light to dark to see the difference.

After playing around with it some more I think I have a better idea what aperture mid offset does. If dynamic black is set to medium, you subtract the aperture mid offset value from aperture max and this is the darkest it will go on medium setting. So if aperture min=11, aperture max=80, aperture mid offset=12, then 80-12=68 so the aperture range on medium would be 11 to 68. On high it would be 11 to 80. So basically medium doesn't get as dark and the difference is the aperture mid offset value.

Also, if you make any changes to the aperture settings and exit the service menu. I think you need to go into the regular menu and turn dynamic black off and then back on or changes may not work right.

This projector is a POS.

White vertical lines and its hot as hell. I have a fan going full blast right next to it to cool it down and its still super hot.

I can't return it because I live overseas, and fixing it is a PITA.

Repeat, this is a POS.

2 months, under 50 hours, and white vertical lines.
