I have a Windows Media PC connected via Linksys DMA2200 extender and a Western Digital Live Hub. All are connected to the 609 via HDMI cables and all network connections are via cat6 cabling. The PC also has a 3tb NAS where I store BD movies converted to MKV files. Saturday night I was watching one of these movies stored locally on the Live Hub and I noticed a little bit of jitter in the picture. It is almost imperceptible, but on slow panning shots it is not quite smooth and appears to drop a frame or two ever so slightly at random. Thought it might have had something to do with the conversion, so I shrugged it off. Yesterday I was watching some recorded TV on the extender (CSI) and again noticed this same jitter. Again, I thought since it was recorded that it might have to do with the source material, so I disconnected the HDMI from the 609 and connected it directly from the extender to the TV. No more jitter.

Now I'm freaking out that the 609 is doing something to the HDMI signal that's causing this jitter. I can't live with this. Since it has happened on 2 different input sources I'm almost sure it has nothing to do with the source material. With the extender the source is stored on a PC and carried over the network, but with the Live Hub the source is stored directly on its 1tb hard drive. I have about a week left to return this unit to the store. Any ideas? Anyone else seeing anything like this? Could it be a setting I need to change?

Hey CycleWriter. I'm a newbie here...getting ready to buy my first A/V Receiver...but I've been doing some due-diligence on this purchase and found this thread at Amazon on the previous model, the TX-SR608. About 40 posts in the discussion.

httx://www.amazon.com/review/R1CUXUJPBC1HEN/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R1CUXUJPBC1HEN

[I'm new so I can't post a url...change the httx above to http...]

...what appears to be a bug with its ability to pass through HDMI video signals unmolested, even in "Through" modes. This bug manifests itself in two ways: 1. 24 bit sources (like cable hdtv) are upconverted to 30 bit when output on a display; AND 2. for some inexplicable reason, 1080p 24fps sources stutter intermittently as if a frame is dropped. The latter might be more noticeable to plasma owners whereas 120hz and 240hz LCDs might compensate for the frame stuttering with their interpolation software...

This is a known issue for the previous model that sounds similar to your concern. The posters at Amazon reference discussions here at AVS on the same known issue. Do a search here maybe.

Hope this helps. I'm pretty sure I'll be ordering this model as well, though your report is disconcerting. I would have figured the engineers at Onkyo would have found a complete fix with this new model. Hummmmm. Maybe your issue is different? Folks with greater knowledge here maybe can help.

I installed my 609 this past Thursday, replacing a TX-SR606. I wanted a 3D capable receiver to easily switch my PS3 and Directv. I've watched HDTV, Blu-rays, 3D Directv and 3D Blu rays so far, and all looked fantastic through the receiver (although 3D from Directv pales in comparrison to 3D Blu's). The OSD is extremely nice, Audessy set up is easy, and the sound is terrific. So far I'm extremely happy with my choice.

CaptSkp, thank you very much. That thread gave me the info on turning off the video processing. Since all of my devices are 1080p-capable and do their own upconverting as needed, it isn't necessary for the 609 to also do it. I suspect that's where the problem is coming in. Too much signal processing going on. Unlike the 608 owners, I still have the OSD, so I can live with this workaround. The stutter wasn't really bad, but on things like slow dolly shots or slow pans it was noticeable and takes you out of the moment when watching. I guess I'm just neurotic that way.

Glad to help! For me it's my OCD. I'd go insane if I couldn't resolve a glitch that continues to haunt me during movies!

It has taken me months to get-over a single, faint, off-center dead pixel in my sweet Samsung SyncMaster XL2370! My wife says it's good therapy for that lone pixel to torment me occasionally...I disagree!

Just setup my 609 today. Wow, this is leaps and bounds beyond the TX-SR500 it is replacing! I had also been looking at the HT-RC270 as well as a couple of Denon AVRs and am happy with my choice. I walked into a store a few days ago and the salesman offered it NIB for $400, so I just couldn't say no.

Setup was pretty straightforward and Audyssey2Eq is a snap. The only thing I'm left wondering is if MultiEq would have offered anything additional, however, the sound is fantastic through the new Polk's (M60s front, M30s surround and CS2 center) along with my old, trusty Paradigm PDR-10 sw. Hard to believe it could get much better than this without a significant investment in other equipment.

This is such a step up for me in technology that I must confess that I'm figuring my way through all of the bells and whistles and think I will be for awhile! Cable DVR, BD player, CD player, VCR, iPod/iPhone (how cool is that USB port fxn for these!!), internet radio all looking and sounding good. I'm waiting for a couple of additional cables from monoprice so I can connect my HD DVD player too. Haven't decided if I'm going to connect the turntable or not, but have a phono preamp to use if I do. I think the S-VHS VCR looks better connected directly to the S-Video input on the plasma, bypassing the AVR but need to play around with these video processing options before I can really say. Haven't tackled DLNA yet.

The thing I spent the most time with today has been reprogramming/tweaking my Harmony 720 remote. While most functions were pretty much in the database, some weren't and there's always the custom buttons I like to see with any given activity. Another work in progress.

I say the 609 is a keeper!

--------------

BTW another bonus I found is that not only can I run the "powered" Zone 2 speakers on my deck but also simultaneously run another Zone 2 in another room using the pre-outs into an old powerline transmitter. I was just hoping to be able to switch easily between those two options but they both work independently.

I think the answer is yes but want to get some feedback from others to confirm my suspicions.

For those of you wondering if the 609 provides a quality picture and sound, I just hooked mine up and have to say the video is impressively better than my old Onkyo 501 model, and the sound makes it like I'm hearing the TV and PS3 for the first time. Still figuring out the remote control but I am sure the learning curve will progress quite quickly.

Anyway, I had my cable box resting on top of the Receiver for my initial set up (which was this past Monday) and last night the video was cutting out for 1 to 2 seconds very frequently, though the sound never wavered. When I moved the cable box the video seemed to go back to normal. As I said earlier, I am pretty sure the problem was overheating as there are a lot of comments to that effect.

Just looking for some validation. Thanks!

I'm sure you are correct. This box needs plenty of ventilation. It's an inch or two taller than my SR500 and when I placed it on the same shelf, there was little clearance above where the BD player was sitting and it started to feel not. I removed that upper shelf (Ikea) and had it running all day without difficulty. I think it runs a little warmer than the 500 but not hot with room to breath.

I have had my 609 for about 3 weeks now, i am trying to figure it all out. can some one explain the different LISTENING MODES ( movies/tv, music game THX) and when to choose them.
i have a 5.1 speaker system. I have learned that for listening to music i like the MUSIC mode in straight stereo mode just the fronts but all the setting on the MOVIE/TV modes are confusing. What is TV logic, and so on in this menu. Some give me surround sound some just the front channel.

It is all detailed in the owner's manual but if you've never dealt with these before, it can be a bit confusing. Honestly, the best thing to do is just keep trying them and see what sounds best to you.

This is my second Onkyo receiver, having had an SR500 for years, so I've had the option for many of these DSPs for awhile, also with my 5.1 system.

I will tell you though, I've never found a lot of use for most of these DSPs. For 2 channel music sources I too use straight stereo mode. For disc and TV multichannel sources like the Dolbys and DTSs, I use them unaltered. I still like Dolby PLII for most 2 channel cableTV sources. I haven't played around much with the THX options yet though. Not a gamer, so I couldn't comment on those options.

I'm looking for a good AVR with the ability to do a decent FRC over HDMI from 50 to 60hz and newest Onkyo with Qdeo seems a good pick. I'm afraid that this feature is locked in this model as owner manual does not give any hint about it (only NTSC/PAL compatibility, which could mean 50hz in 50 hz out, for me a deal-breaker). Can any user somehow confirm this ability? I was looking at both Denon and Pioneer avr's with ABT2010 2015 and qdeo chips but they cost a lot more.

I already did not decided to invest in DVDO edge, Altona HD560 and other simmilar equipment.

I am having problems getting on screen display, and control of my Ipod touch (Gen 2) using the UP-A1 dock. i have followed the directions, got the receiver into extended mode but nothing. I can play movies and music but only by controlling the I pod itself.

any help would be great...

Hi Metalbender, check the iPod video settings is set to output to Tv.

Hi All

I'm getting an intermittent crackle out of my right surround speaker of my 5.1 set up. I've checked the cabling, changed the speaker, swapped the HDMI cable from sky box to receiver, swapped the HDMI from receiver to tv and downloaded the firmware (twice). It seems to be more prevalent when watching films/shows that offer HD,AD,DD etc. Furthermore, I seem to get it more on THX settings.
Any help, as ever, is very much appreciated.

When streaming music from a pc (windows 7), does the album art show up on the tv?

Someone owners, please tell me the ability of 609 with experiment, below.

Main zone: DTS HD Master audio 5.1ch decode from Blu-ray
Zone 2 : Flac 96/24bit decode from USB

Can this work simultaneously?

I figured that problem out i was pushing the wrong menu button. Their are like 3 on the remote.

Got my 609 last week, is replacing a TX-SR805 (the 805 was just too big, plus I wanted network capability). Sounds awesome. Setup was a breeze, as was performing a firmware upgrade via ethernet. Picture looks just as good if not better than it did on the 805.

One minor glitch I found, was when playing DVD/Blu Ray's on my Oppo BDP-83 in 24Hz mode - if the color depth mode on the BDP-83 was set to 30-bit, the picture would flicker on/off every few seconds. Turning this setting off or setting it higher (36-bit) resolved the issue.

Overall, very pleased with the 609.

got it set up and it works great and sounds great! I do have a problem when I press net as the input - the screen goes all green on the tv. I have a feeling there is a problem with my TV - hitachi 51f510 - its hdmi v1 and it does not like newer hdmi sources. I have a toshiba 2000 blu ray player and the tv doesnt like the hdmi output - I must use component. When I take the player to a newer tv - hdmi works with no problem, so I have a feeling its the tv. If I hook the blu ray up through the onkyo I get the same green screen. Anyone know how to force the net input out the onkyo component outputs?

I've been looking at this receiver and the R360. They appear to be nearly identical except for the VGA in and THX certification(which I don't think adds anything physically).

The R360 is $399, which is the extent of my budget. Which sucks because I guess the 609 itself was at the price for a while, but no longer. But if they are indeed essentially the same receiver, I really wouldn't care if I get the 360 instead of the 609.

Has anyone experiencing problems with no audio when using HDMI Through when the receiver is in standby mode? It did work until I performed the latest FW update today. But now I only get video from my DTV receiver using HDMI Through.
Does the tx-nr609 (or tx-nrx09) allow the display of the volume and menus over a hdmi connected 3D source such as a 3D bluray movie. I noticed that Denon this year is advertising this ability for their 3312ci and 2312ci models and was curious if any Onkyo's supported this as well.
Thanks for any replies.

I have the exact same problem. I wasn't sure if it was related to the FW update or not, but the timing fits. Have you made any progress?
looks like you cant send the "net" input out the component output - so I am stuck using the 2 line on unit display for internet radio, pandora and the rest. I was able to get pandora up and running but it was a pain. I am going to contact onkyo to see if they can do something about the hdmi handshake issue.

Anyone using the OnkyTroller android app?
Ordered the 609 today and should have it Wednesday after work. Can anyone let me know if it shows the volume of the receiver on the TV when you change the volume? I have my current receiver out of sight and it's kind of a pain to tweak the volume.
as long as you are displaying the content via the onkyo hdmi out - volume will be on the screen. You can also display surround type and other info on screen. There is no OSD on component out from the onkyo.
Only gripe I have with the 609 is this - you can't directly stream Netflix or Hulu video feeds to it. The receiver is DLNA certified, and using a third-party app on my PC, the 609 can see my Netflix playlist... it just wont play them. It's great that it'll stream music files, I'm just bummed that it wont handle a video stream directly via the same method.

Anyone have any ideas why this capability wasnt included? It should be possible yeah?

Yes....I finally got the HDMI Through to work. Although, I as "tinkering" with several options, so I am not sure which one did the trick. Listed below is a quick summary of what I did.....

Under Input/Output Assign
- Verified HDMI Inputs --> removed any HDMI inputs not used
- Verified Digital Audio Input --> OPTICAL 1 was also set on my HDMI input so I fixed that.

Under Hardware Setup, HDMI
- HDMI Through set to Auto
- Audio TV Out set to Off

Like I said, it is working just fine now, but not 100% sure which setting did the trick. Good Luck!

I am not aware of any receiver that can stream more than audio or jpegs...

i have an Onkyo Tx-609 AVR PSB T6 towers c5 center, and G- series rear.
I used Audyssey to set up my speakers.
I am getting a hiss coming out of my tweeter's any thoughts? it is way worse watching TV, than movies played on DVD player.
