Best way to control AV equipment with iPhone/iPod Touch

My first thread, so please be nice

I am planning my HT and I want to control my AV equipment with an iPhone or Touch. I have an idea of what I want to do but I have not heard of anyone else doing it.

I am already set on Insteon to control all the lights in my house (including HT) with an iPhone using the Smartlinc.

So here is what I am planning:

iPhone --> smartlinc (via internet) --> IRlinc transmitter --> AV equipment

My question is has anyone done this or would this even work?

Does it work well or is it a pain to use?

Is there a better option to use an iPhone to control AV? (I don't want to add an IR transmitter to my iPhone)

Are you discussing Insteon specifically or iPhone controls or ...?
