Your Cropping sizing has helped me find my ideal size settings for my screen shots....

Two from THE INCEDIBLES.
Projector: BenQW5000 calibrated to 6500K with Gamma 2.2 and test patterns from PC.
Anamorphic Lens: Aussiemorphic MK4.
Screen: Custom Curved using SmX
Camera: FujiFilm FinePix set to S and custom white balanced using screen as reference for white.

I have screen shots of those same 2 scenes but mine is with Lights On...







Little BLur but you can still see the color detail

Except mine are made up using the full 1920 x 1080 pixels and therefore fill the screen top to bottom. I don't have any black bars top and bottom of the screen.

that is the major benifit of your setup vs a 16 x 9 screen,
I did consider it but i went with a media room over a movie room
I love watching my sports in 16x9 and also my projector has a manual zoom
to get it properly on a 2.35 screen i would need a 7000 $ powered add on lens.
To do it right you need the add on.
which i dont want to do.
If i every was to do a second room in my house i would do it.
but i havent won the lotto yet so that plan is on hold...he he

Not to be a downer, but I'm a teeny bit baffled about this thread. The screen shots are looking like they were taken from old, grainy DVDs, in terms of image noise and low resolution. Yet I presume you are probably using HD sources. So I'm not sure what gives. Have you looked at some of the tutorials in how to do screen shots in other threads? 'Cause...you are posting this for public consumption, yet I'm not sure what we are supposed to get out of low quality screen shots. (???)

BTW, as for the lights-on shots in the thread, while it's impressive in it's own right that a projected image can still be visible or viewable in ambient light...it doesn't make for a good image. The images, even on a black diamond screen with ambient light, are significantly more washed out than a typical lights-off projected image or a flat panel. Of course one doesn't expect miracles in ambient light conditions for any screen/projector combo. But for me I'd much rather watch a really good image on a flat panel in ambient lighting vs a big but worse/more washed out image. For me specialty screens in ambient light are like that remark about the dog (or is it bear?) that can dance. The amazing thing is the dog can dance at all, not that it dances well.

From someone who doesnt take screen shots I am also baffled at your comments.

To come onto someones created thread and leave a remark like that with out showing in living color an example makes me shake my head..

As for the ambient light shots i have asked you for shots of your Stewart firehawk but i just got an excuse of why you dont.
Getting a little frustrated with people leaving comments judging others shots who refuse to take any themselves.
I for one would love you to take some shots and show us in living color what you Mean.....

Who is "Hawkman?" My name is quite clearly displayed in my posts, so I don't know how you'd miss it. (Or do you typically make up names for people whom you disagree with?)

You've participated in that thread. Have you not noticed there are plenty of good screen shots in there? Not noticed some are better than others?
Many rightly single out paolino64's shots as superb.

Please remember: this is an AV enthusiast discussion forum. It's filled with people who take image quality very seriously. Any time people post images they become up for discussion. That's why this is a discussion forum. Look at the debates in the Blu-Ray forum over screen shots, screen grabs, mastering quality etc.

If someone creates a whole thread of their own essentially saying to everyone here "LOOK AT MY SCREENSHOTS," then to do so is to invite comments. That's what we DO here.

There is no reason to drop our critical faculties and yell "Yay! Fantastic! Great job! Awewsome images!" if that's not what the images warrant.

If you think they are great, you get to say so. If I wonder why anyone would post such screen shots, I get my say.

If someone has a diferent opinion than you, it's ok and not a forum crime and no one's mother is being insulted.

I don't own a Firehawk. You must be mixing me up with "Hawkman" with whom you have some strange beef going.

As for my comments on screens used with ambient light: those are referencing my experience actually seeing them in action. It would be silly to
make judgements simply on screen shots.

I'm quite aware of what it takes to get a good screen shot from an image and haven't had the inclination to bother doing so.

I did take some shots of my projection screen in action, but those were not for image quality per se: rather they were demonstrating the different screen shapes I get with my masking system. It is a 1.3 gain white screen (Stewart ST-130). They were taken in ambient light conditions and you can see them here:

(As I've mentioned before, it's not that hard to set up a room so some room lights can be left on while maintaining good picture quality, even with a white screen. You just have to realise you don't want lights shining directly at the screen, which should be obvious).

But, again, those screen shots were not taken with they intent (or care) of trying to capture the actual image quality on my screen. If I ever do that, I'll post some.
