Official Panasonic GT30 Series Discussion Thread [No Price Talk] - Page 53

Hey guys, I just pruchased the 50' GT30. I like the set so far I just have a couple questions:

What is the option that controls the "Soap Opera" effect? On the LG tv I just returned it was called "TruMotion". I cannot find it anywhere on the tv.

I just selected "THX" mode and the picture is great. I didn't make any other adjustments. When watching Shutter Island on BR I did notice the soap opera effect. It was faint but it was definitely there.

Also, and I don't know if I'm being nuts here, but there is this sort of strange after effect in the color if I turn my eyes away from the screen. I noticed it when that Dyson vacuum commercial comes on the screen. The commercial ends with a black screen and white text in the middle. If I look at the text and then shift my eyes away from it, the white text turns yellow. I see it when there is a big contrast on the screen. I don't really understand it. Anyone?

THX mode disables the overall FI (frame interpolation) AKA soap opera effect that would apply to all source material. However, it does not seem to disable the FI that is utilized in 24p 60hz direct in mode. For some reason, and this has been discussed before earlier in this thread, the 24p support on the GT30 employs some level of FI in 60hz mode. There is no FI used is 48hz mode, but that introduces undesirable flicker. Your best bet is to disable 24p at the source (PS3 or other Blu-ray player).

This happens to me as well, I thought I was the only one...except with mine I see it more as a quick flash of green. its happened to me on my gt30, as well as a st30, and numerous projectors. I have no clue what causes it.

Not sure where to ask this, so I thought I'd post it here since I just purchased a GT30 with the Avatar kit. Does the Avatar 3D movie also include the 2D version?

Glad to know I'm not the only one

hi again, missed being on here for a few weeks now

i'm a recent new owner of the gt30,

i have a question now,

lately, since i've been watching it more and spending more time with the set,
i noticed on my streaming Netflix via PS3, i notice a ... fluctuating haze of some kind?

like, the image very gradually turns more and more "hazey" or "smokey", especially in the greys/darks/blacks. then when it "reaches its peak" it like, pops back down to nothing, no haze, just crisp colors, clear deep inky blacks.

i've noticed this 'smokey thingy' happening only in my NetFlix streams, i've not watched enough other source materials to notice the effect happening,
and it's not happening, or at least i'm not noticing it, when im playing any video games via PS3.

is this something i should start looking further into, getting concerned about, or just ignore it as a side-effect of "streaming media" ?

Has anybody compared the ST and GT side by side to see how much lower the black level is on the GT? How much lower does it look to them....not just measurements. Other improvements in the GT picture? Reviews are mixed. Some say the two are very much the same, while others say the GT is quite a bit better and very noticeable?

Can anyone tell me if the gt30 produces much heat?

I can get an idea of how much heat it produces if you can compare it to the warmth the xbox 360 makes. more or less?

My room is always kinda warm, so it would kinda suck if im adding even more heat in there.
Heat, yes. No idea how much a 360 makes.

Is this the most recent gen of glasses?

Yes, I believe so. It says gen 3 in the details and also says it was first available on Amazon on 8/28/11. The model # also looks right, though I don't have it completely memorized.

On that page, scroll down to tech details. Also below that is the part number. The 3 after the 3D in the number denotes it being 3rd gen. So yea looks like 3rd

edit: looks like ya beat me to it madpony.

I guess they did end up redesigning the boxes. Previous post said it was going to be too expensive to redo the boxes for the newly released glasses.

One last thing, can someone who has got one of these Avatar kits(doesn't have to be w/the most current gen of glasses) that the size glasses in the box are large. I wear glasses and need the large size but it doesn't state what size they are on the product number/description(if anything I would assume they are size medium due to the "M" in the product number.

Sorry, realized how stupid that was after I posted it

But at least I was hoping to bring that to the attention of those who may have purchased recently like myself, while trying to avoid price talk.

I did the same thing! Stopped at Sears last night so I could get a look at one in real life before buying, unforunately they were set up with only 3D material, which is a bonus for this TV but I still view it as a novelty (the 2008 Beijing Olympics clips were cool, though, if oddly low-rez). I should really get a 55" or 59/60" but at this price the 50" is a way better value, and I'm hoping for better TV tech down the line before going really big. Coming up from a 2005 42" Panasonic plasma. The 50" GT30 will have about a 40% larger viewing area, weigh about 10lbs less, will be 1080p instead of 1,024x768, should use less energy, and has a fix for floating blacks. Woo!

Here is the transcript of the chat I just had with the Panasonic support rep with respect to break-in. I thought new owners might find it interesting - I did not see that this was in the manual.

Transcript:
Charles: Hi Erick. I purchased a new Plasma 50 inch GT30 last weekend. It is being delivered today. I wanted to know if Panasonic has a recommended break-in procedure for this plasma tv? I did not see one in the manual.
Erick C: Yes I will provide you with some recommended procedures, just one moment.
Charles: Great, thank you.
Erick C: During this time, to minimize any risk of image retention, follow the below steps.

Make sure the plasma TV is in a viewing mode (aspect ratio) that completely fills the screen. The panel is shipped in this condition, in what is called the "Just" mode.
Change the Picture Mode from Vivid to Standard or Cinema. Cinema would be best.
Briefly engage the 4:3 aspect and confirm the side bars are set to "Mid", or "Bright". This can be adjusted in the Set Up menu.
Always return the display mode that fills the screen (such as Just, Zoom, Full, or H-FILL).
Try not to view channels with stationary backgrounds or logos for extended periods of time.
Avoid extended display of static images (video games, computer images, DVD title screens, etc.). No fixed image should appear on the TV for more than 15% of the viewing week.

Charles: Thank you. What is the recommended break-in time period?
Erick C: As for most manufacturers this is 100 hrs.

So how would you enable it if you used another video preset(like vivid)?

I'm not sure I understand your question. There is no issue with enabling motion smoothing. There is an option in the menu - believe it's under advanced settings. The issue is with 24p support @ 60hz and how it employs FI to do its job. There's no way to disable the motion smoothing while retaining 24p output at the source unless you use 48hz.

I think Panasonic should have made a 72 Hz option on the GT. Why make the 24 fps option on BOTH the ST AND GT effectively useless for 2D because of flicker. Pioneer had 72 Hz standard for use with 24 fps and it worked.

Is anybody noticing colour tinting in any of the modes? Some reviews talked of this and I'm wondering how much of a concern it is and whether it can be fixed.

Does anyone have the default offset values? I admit I screwed with my offsets, and now my warm2 setting is all sorts of screwed up. PLEASE HELP!!

in D-NICE's settings I mistakenly set the values that said "0 offset" to 0 values.

Did you adjust both the HD and SD color spaces ? if you didnt adjust the SD color space your orginal setting should be there. Every panel has slightly different offsets coming out of the factory so there is no default.

says the glasses only work up to 10.5' away. My seating is about 15'-18' away. Does anybody have a similar seating distance and if so do you have a problem w/the glasses working? Is this post accurate?

Thank you so much for your help! I was able to revert back to these settings by looking at the SD numbers. One question though, my warm2, looks darker than warm1, was that normal on a TV with unmodified numbers?

When I did this, I changed my settings within THX mode as DNICE described. Would that affect all color modes? (custom, vivid, etc) Does the color mode within the service mode make a difference?

I am waiting on these, which I believe is the 3rd gen as well judging by the part number too.

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-TY-E...795000&sr=1-12

I ordered not realizing the 1-2 month shipping wait. But if they are the newest and are half price of the current and I am assuming better somehow, I can't pull the trigger on the current or blu ray bundles.

Has anyone compared the current gen and the new? I bought a used pair of the current gen glasses because I am itching to test out the 3d on this TV.

When you say color tinting, are you referring to the colors being off? I posted this concern earlier in the thread, including the Official GT30 Settings Thread, but not too many responded except for Ken325i. He agreed with me in saying that the colors appear to be off. Adjusting the tint really doesn't help much, except make it worse. In other words, the color tones on peoples faces dont appear natural looking. Other than this, I'm happy with my set so far. Does anyone know if there's a firmware coming soon to fix this?

I actually purchased some of these last week. I received them on Monday. They are lighter than the last model Panasonic Glasses. They sit a little lower (the nose piece isn't as tall). They have a feature that will turn 3d images into 2d images (so basically if a group of people are watching a 3d movie, and someone doesn't want to watch it in 3d but also doesn't want to watch it all blurry without glasses, they press the button and the glasses converts it back to 2D) It's actually a pretty cool feature.

With the prices coming down on the 50GT30 I've been starting to consider that over the 46ST30. I know some of these questions will likely have been asked before but I'm on my phone and it's hard to search the whole thread for it. What is the light output of the GT30 using D-Nice's settings? I know the ST is 26ftl but I haven't seen a number for the GT. Also, how is gaming on it in regard to input lag and IR compared to the ST? I imagine they'd be very similar but I just wanted to check. Thanks.

I got two responses from Panasonic that may help someone.

in regard to the distance the glasses work: Transmitter for 3D Eyewear within 3.2 m (10? 5?) from front surface (within 35-degree horizontal, 20-degree vertical). Also

see that Amazon is offering a promo where you get an Avatar kit for free. This is free kit: TY-EW3D3MMK3 What size 3D glasses come i that kit? Does the "M" in the product stand for medium?
Yes, the M does stand for medium size.
FYI for anyone else like me who wears glasses, you will have to purchase the large pair separately.

Oh nice. Did you happen to order on Amazon?
