Cool, thanks. I am thinking of pulling the trigger on this and it would be very nice to have the latest eeprom as the August build should.

Yeah finally pulled the trigger on the 55 gt!!!

I was debating 60 vs 55 but it's a small room with about 9 feet from screen to eye.

Still not sure if I should cancel the 55 and go 60. lol

Worried about pixel density being that close.

How to get into service menu (Note that you can damage your TV if you don't know what you are doing; so stop now if you are nervous)
1. Turn TV On.
2. With TV on, hold down the volume down (-) button on the right side of the TV (not the controller).
3. While holding the volume (-) button down, point the remote at the TV IR sensor and press the "info" button on the controller three times.
4. The service menu will pop up after a few seconds.

The default screen that pops up is where it has all the software info will be; don't push any other buttons. When you are done turn the TV off or unplug it.

53.41 or higher on a 55 or 60?
Cancel the 55. Get a 60. Trust me 9 feet is seriously pushing it with a 55. These tv's arent as big as they look especially from 9 feet away, 9 feet is not close. There is No way you'll see a difference in pixel density. 60 inches really is not that big. I have a 60 sit 10.5 feet away and am getting a 65. 60 is big but not big enough. 65 should do the trick.
I'm 9 feet from a 65" HAHA....

Anyways my set was delivered today and it's a October build! I was pumped to begin with after seeing that. Once the delivery guys finished setting up the stand we plugged it in and all I can say is WOW!!!

Oh and ZERO buzzing can be heard! I had to mute the set and put my ear right to the back of the set in order to hear it!
You both suck!!!!

Called my brother and asked him, he said go 65. lol Can't go that crazy.

So just cancelled the 55 and went with the 60" GT. Should get an Oct build also then.

Where did yours ship from?

Thanks guys!

Mine was from a local Canadian big box store. I was told on another Canadian forum that they still had older sets in their warehouse. Mine was fresh from Panasonic so I guess they were wrong.
Cool. Yeah I ordered from amazon, and I live in MA. Suppose to be here next week, so I will update what build I get.
Explain how this tv handles 24p correctly if it's 60HZ? Cnet said it handles it. correctly in60HZ mode. If this is true what's the point of 96hz? Please someone in the know please explain. I'm very new to plasma technology.

hey everybody,

i'm trying to pull the trigger last minute on a 55gt30 before midnight tonight.. if anyone's available, i'd appreciate an answer to a very simple question:

can you turn off the red led power light on the bottom of these units?

i find it extremely distracting and my searching on this thread as well as google has not proven fruitful..

many thanks for all your insights,
dave

Wouldnt a piece of electrical tape work? That way you can always remove it if you go to sell it. Wont be that noticeable since you can cut it so tiny and wont damage the set.

Why before midnight tonight? Does this price point end?
not sure, it dropped $160 today to match panasonic epp pricing and don't know if it will last in to tomorrow..

regarding the electrical tape.. i've thought about it but really, a piece of tape on a nice brand new tv just makes me cringe when other manufacturers are setting up the ability to turn theirs off..

so does anyone know if there's a way?

btw, thanks for the quick responses you guys..

You cannot turn off the red LED power light. If the TV is on, the light will be on, just in case you can't tell that there is a picture on the screen.

What i do on all my TVs and PC monitors that have annoyingly bright LEDs is to partially cover them with a tiny piece of black electrical tape just big enough to cover half or most of the LED, leaving just a sliver of light showing. It's not noticeable from more than a few feet away during the day, and not at all at night.

Best way to find out, is to go to panasonics website and download the user manual. If its not in there, thats a no. I guess being a muscle car gearhead, those little tricks have always done well for me. Tape doesnt hurt anything and noone will notice a tiny, tiny circle of tape.
thanks randy, you are fantastic!

ughh.. guess i'll have to go the tape route.. like this tv too much to let it stop me, but man the idea bugs me..

at least i'll have 30 days to see if the tape will bother me at all.. not concerned about doing is as much knowing that there's a piece of tape on my tv.. will need to send my ocd elsewhere to keep from staring at it..

thanks again guys.. you too pete..

edit/update:

went ahead and ordered the 55gt30 and definitely feel like i got a great price. i sucked up the ny tax on amazon in exchange for the fact of 30 day free return (i'm hoping it's safe to assume that amazon's return policy isn't limited to just defects, i.e. i can return it for any reason including satisfaction, correct?).. in the end, it was between this and the 55lw5600 and i'm pretty confident i made the right choice. the lg was selling me pretty hard on the passive 3d, but i know in the end i will get better 2d pq with this unit with proper break in and calibration..

just also wanted to say a final thanks to everyone on these boards.. it's a great community with a ton of knowledgeable people.. this thread has been extremely helpful to read through as is many others..

oh, and it's 12:15am now and the special pricing is still going on.. so maybe i didn't need to rush after all.. will be interesting to see what it is come morning..

Hey guys so after some deliberating i am looking into possibly getting this plasma or the samsung d7000. Buggest problem and concern would of course be IR. I am a heavy xbox user and have a top notch Bowers and Wilkins system set up where the tv is going but with all my game playing im wondering if its a bad idea to go plasma. Please let me know and thanks in advance!

Maybe THESE will be a little easier to accept...

When I run DNices breakin slides is it safe/ok to leave the TV for 100hrs straight cycling through the slides??? I plan on doing the break in on the TV in a separate room and then when my TV mount arrives from MONOPRICE installing it in the living room where the TV is going
post #2571 of 4130
I so want to do the 55GT, but am worried about the FBr issue.. is this still a problem? I read this thread and it seems to be here and there. Is this set even worth the trouble?

If you live in NY everything Amazon starts or end is at 3am. They follow pacific time. Which pretty much every other company does too on the Internet. Took me a while to realize that too. Good deal though.

I finally jumped and ordered at 60GT30 from Future Shop in Canada. I am just wondering, am I supposed to get an Avatar BluRay Disc?

Yes. It won't hurt the TV - if it does, then the TV is defective anyway and it's better to know sooner than later.

He has said previously that it's ok to do it all in one 100-hour session, or you can break it up into multiple partial sessions - as long as the total is 100 hours. Follow his procedure to the letter. No other content should be viewed during this 100 hour process.

The first 60gt30 I had (before 6 yr old threw toy through the screen) was Sept. build. No issues. The 60gt30 I just got last week is a May build with no issues as well. It's kinda hit and miss, but can be fixed if you get one that needs fixing.

I just bought the same deal. Should arrive a week from Monday and just in time for the NBA lockout to end
post #2578 of 4130
I've had my 55GT30 for 10 days now, it has an August build date, serial# xxx1215xxx and the PDP EEP version is 62.46. So I should have the FBr updates installed, right? I ran D-Nices slides for 103 hours to be exact and did not watch any content during that time. I updated the firmware to 2.07. I tried the D-Nice settings and found them to be very dark. So I tried several other settings and went with the settings Dave O posted in the GT30 calibration thread. They gave the best overall picture I've seen so far. But the picture still seems to be on the dark side and I do seem to have the fluctuating brightness problem after all. I see it while watching hockey. At first I thought it was camera flash from the crowd in the stadium but it is just to consistent to be anything other than FBr. Also I'm having problems getting past the fact that whites just are not very bright. Is it worth calling Panasonic for the A-board swap or has that been done already based on the build date noted above? And any thoughts on how to get the picture brighter?

Thanks for the help!!

Luca

I just bought a 65" (came with it delivered) and a 50" ST (Picking it up in store this next week) and I got a copy for each unit. So yes, go back and make sure they give you one.
Has anyone tried out the 2.1 firmware? I applied it today and the picture looks better to me, the color seems better saturated. Apparently it's to address a luminance issue.

I am using D-Nice settings, dropped the color from 45 to 40 and skin tones look natural again. Just curious if anyone else has used this firmware and if they changed there settings.

Thanks
