Nominal sound level would be 6 dB less at 1 meter as compared to 50 cm.

Was I the only one who bought the special W1100 + BDX4200 combo deal for $1,099 at Fry's? This is great deal for gamer, first-time projector owner, and just about anyone looking for a projector with great PQ. Speaking of first-time projector owners, people who stay away from projectors often do so because they think that using a projector requires a dedicated room with expensive and time-consuming work. Yes, if you want to build a home theater that looks like a theater. But you can still enjoy the projector experience without a dedicated room and the expensive work.

Here is my W1100 in a bedroom setup. The projector is put away after use so that the bedroom remains a bedroom.

Simple wall-mounting. With this projector, this is all you need for sound and picture.

Watching one of my favorite guitarists on Youtube.

Putting it away after use.

I had to contact BenQ USA for that. If you want to be certain, you may also contact them for reassurance

I figured the W1100 and W1200 would be 4x since they bumped the W1000+ to 3x and if they wanted to do better they had to bump it to 4x after some complaints from RBE sensitive individuals? I just wanted to be sure. Not sure why they don't publicly post it, like some companies though...

@Davidt1
Not sure how you found that deal, as I mentioned before I could only find the BenQ W1100 being sold alone online for a non-bundled and inflated price. But I think you mentioned that you got it at their stores right? Perhaps it was a new promotion deal, and perhaps not offered at every outlet.

Thanks........ As for the sale, it was on page three of our Friday's Fry's ad and in small print so if you just looked through the pages quickly you could very easily have missed it.

P.S. This is the last day of the Benq W1100 sale.

I have some issues with my W1100.

1. The fan drifting in and out high mode when the projector is in "economy" mode is annoying because I sit real close to the projector. I said earlier that it's a safety feature, not defect. I said that because I thought maybe there is a temperature sensor that detects high temperature and puts the fan in high "mode".

Now I don't think so anymore. There is just no reason for the fan to go into high mode when the projector is in "economy" mode. My Optoma HD70 doesn't do this.

2. When the screen is blank/black, I see two faint white spots on the upper left corner where the black bar usually is. It's not noticeable when watching a movie though. Again my HD70 doesn't have this, so I consider this abnormal. I tried to take pictures, but the spots don't show in the pictures.

I think I will be returning this unit, but I am afraid will get one with the same fan noise problem as long as the firmware is version 1.0. Can you update the firmware by yourself? Can other owners confirm that the fan is drifting in and out of high mode on your unit? Thanks.

I've had about 7 projectors through the years, 3 that have had econo modes. It is in the design for the fan to kick to high when temperature gets to high. in high fan if the temp continues to rise you should get a high temp signal and eventual auto shutdown.

However, in econo mode the fan shouldnt kick into high all the time. my current projector only kicks into high when i have the heater too high in the winter (ceiling mount). i can resolve the issue simply by closing the vent closest to the projector.

I believe the industry's pursuit for silent machines is way over done. you can sell me a machine that properly cools at 2db higher than one that doesnt cool correctly any day. maybe that can be corrected with a firmware update by simply increasing the heat sensor but it will most likely result in shorter lamp life.

as i said in an earlier post, if the w1100 has a cooling problem (which may be what we have here) it's off my shortlist. when the fan kicks into high how long is it before its kicks back to low?

another question for david:

i've been unable to find the lenght of the usa warrenty on this machine. somewhere, maybe benq's website, maybe elsewhere, i read that the warrenty is dependent on the country of sale. so i ask you, are you in the US and if so how does the warrenty read?

The warranty in the US one year, according to the review websites. I just looked in the user manual. It doesn't have even mention how long the warranty is. This is one of things that irks about Benq. Their website has nothing on warranty information and services.

Now back to the fan noise. I have read many reviews of many projectors. Trustedreviews' of the W1200 is the first I have come across that complains about the fan drifting in and out of high mode when the projector is in "economy" mode.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/benq-w...ojector_review

My 4 year old Optoma HD70 has never once run the fan on high when the projector is in "economy" mode. I don't consider the fan running high mode when the projector is in "economy" normal at all.

If you come across this thread, regardless of projector you own, please I need your input on this. Does your projector run the fan on high when it's in economy mode. Thanks.

Regarding Sharp projectors:

Standard verbage in every sharp projector manual -

"The cooling fan regulates the internal temperature, and its performance is automatically controlled. The sound of the fan may change during projector operation due to changes in the fan speed. This does not indicate malfunction."

i've never owned anything but a sharp so i cant speak for the others

'Winner' is the Epson. I have strong doubts.
Magazine review in the shops (I think), I'll read it to see how they came to this conclusion.

The review looks more like an a paid commercial for Epson. I assume that they looked at 3 projectors. Yet they only had the Epson on the table.

What is that fan sound level video supposed to tell me when it's not compared to anything or measured in decibels?

So no other Benq owners here who can tell if their Benq projectors drift in and out of high and low fan modes when the projector is in "economy" mode?

There is also something else. I find that it is very easy to push the lens back when I put the dust cover on. This mean I have to re-focus the image the next time I use the projector. This is not a defect, is it? My HD70 doesn't do this.

Yes as of recently the fan started to drift from low to higher speed in economy mode. also ive noticed that the mode changed itself to standart from economy itself once.
Putting on the so called "dust cover" does mess up ur focus and zoom. I dont use the dust cover as i belive its not mandatory and u can use soft cloth once in a few days of use to get rid of dust.

I think however that the firmware should be updated. ive called russian benq service and they asked me to bring the projector for firmware update and confirmed that there is an updated version of the firmware. however i wouldnt trust this info because the service department just need working hours for stats.

Can you ask them:

what issues, if any, the new firmware is supposed to fix?

if you can download it on a USB drive and install it yourself?

Since people most likely connect their projector to a computer, wouldn't be cheaper for projector manufacturers to make possible for people to update the firmware themselves?
they said i must bring the projector in. manual update not. list of solved issues was not mentioned as u never get to speak to a pro while on hotline.

I took this RBE sensitivity test and couldn't see any rainbows. Even moved my head and still no rainbows. This confirms what Trustedreviews said about the W1200 not producing any rainbows when they tried to look for it.

http://www.scannerplace.com.au/benq_W500_projector.html

I have a question for other W1100/W1200 owner:

Does the PIP function on your projector work? It doesn't work on my W1100. I could only get one window to show something while the other window is blank. Can someone test please? Thanks.

Any info on real lumen ratings? Too bad that Fry's deal the other week is expired, do they honor coupons that have been expired for a few days?

Here are some measurements after calibration from the French website:

http://translate.google.com/translat...Q-W1100-4.html

To put that into perspective, it needs to be compared to a similar projector. Here are some measurement after calibration for the HC4000:

http://translate.google.com/translat...%26prmd%3Divns

To the best of my knowledge, Fry's does not honor expired deals.
Thanks for the posts. The lumen ratings seems on the low end compared to Art's review of the W1000. You'd think both the 1000 and 1100 would be quite similar in that regard.

Chris
You can only compare measured lumen output within that site though.
For example, in their W1000+ review their measured values were between 368-836 lumens. While in Art's review of the W1000, he got values between 565-2116, so a big difference! They must have different ways of measuring the output.

Found the answer to my own question. PIP does not work with 2 HDMI inputs. It only works with 1 HDMI input and any one of the other inputs.

Thank you for your captive attention.

I was all set to get the HC4000 this Friday until this messed up my intentions. Does anyone have an idea on when this might be officially reviewed in English? Also, any word on the firmware update? Would this ever be available for the projector owner to do with a USB drive?

Review in English:

English review of the W1200 which basically is the same as the W1100:

It would be great if updates can be done by owners via the USB port. If a bunch of people ask Benq, maybe they will provide us a means to do so.

I never understand why style (unless it is designed to enhance functions) is even a factor in some of these reviews. The projector is used in dark room where people's attention is focused on the screen. Who cares about what the projector looks like. If it were up to me, matte black is mandatory for all projectors.

Are you saying that it does not handle 1080p24 correctly?
