new photographer: Best 23" monitor for editing photos?

Thread Starter
I'm currently working on a 12" macbook and the small screen just isn't doing it for me for editing photos. I've heard a lot of people saying get the 27" iMac display but that happens to be way out of my budget. any other options out there?

Thanks

You need a IPS based panel (preferably IPS with True-White Polarizer). Buy such monitors are very expensive and only produced by NEC and Eizo (the panel itself is made by LG).

The budget alternative is the Dell U2311H (if the link below isn't working, copy and paste the model number into Dell's search box).

The monitor is designed by Dell, manufactured by Foxconn and contains e-IPS panel from LG. Unlike the common brands, Dell offer "one hot pixel exchange policy" during the warranty period. In the UK, Dell offers next day on-site swap, but not sure about the U.S.

It's better to buy the U2311H and a colorimeter than an expensive monitor

wow cool Nielo I was looking at this as well with it being the largest size with 1080 native

But just curious why IPS is important for a workstation monitor when wide angle is not pertinent and blacks would probably be more important?

Monitors are often viewed at close range, so viewing angles matter. As you know, the closer you're to the panel, the greater the shift. The new e-IPS and H-IPS monitors only suffer from extremely minor gamma shift. It also provides more consistent image, which is easier on the eye especially when viewing web pages with lower tone color (e.g. gray background with white text).

e.g. http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

IPS panels also retain shadow detail and yield the most accurate grayscale and color, which is why they are used by professionals.

But if you need an LCD panel with deep blacks for movies and gaming, but willing to tolerate gamma and color shift, then opt for the c-PVA from Samsung. It is about the same price as the Dell.

Thanks actually I was not aware it shifts at close distance, only when off angle, but it does make sense theoretically if think about it.

I can't sit too close to my 40C580 (S-PVA). I have to be at least 1.8 to 2m away if I want consistent image.

But you can view e-IPS, H-IPS and IPS-Pro from any angle.

When sitting closer the surface of the LCd screen TV becomes bigger, off-angle problems become more noticeable especially in a dark room with dark scenes. Standing in front of a 46 inch has a simular effect effect as sitting off-angle at viewing distance.
