Two Consoles, One House

Hey folks,

I just bought a second 360 for the family room upstairs, and I have my original 360 in the theater. Do I have to do that "Recover Gamertag" thing every time we decide to play in one room and then in theater next?

I don't understand exactly how that works. Right now I am going through the hassle of recovering the gamertag each time, but that is a serious PITA when four people have to do it every single time.

Thanks!

I use a memory card with the gamertags on them. You have to move the memory card to the xbox that you want to use but it's the easiest way I know of to what you want.

They def need to fix this issue.

For my two Gamertag, two 360 setup we each have a 512MB Memory Card that we walk back and forth depending on where we want to play. My girl's normally lives upstairs while mine normally sits downstairs.

You can do the same thing with 1-16GB USB flash drives as well. Maybe it's time to buy 4 $10 2GB flash drives, one for each person?

Problem with that, is, you only have the option of two usb's in the box at any one time. (unless you're gonna mess around with the rear usb port...) Then if you have Kinect....
Of course you could have two on one and two on another..

My son plays at a little place that specializes in online gaming, and he brings his HDD with him. You're right in that it does seem like a pain.

I've not really messed with thumb drives on the 360, but is it not possible to move your tags to a USB drive, clone the drive to another stick and then move the tags to both machines? You just have to be sure you don't log in to the same account on both machines at once....do that one too many times and you could get banned.

If that isn't possible, the Datel memory transfer kit is still available in some spots -

Glad to see I'm not the only one who finds this annoying. Anyone know why this is actually necessary, and why my GT can't 'live' on more than one console at a time?

Is there a limit to the number of gamertags on one USB - can I put all family members on one USB?

And, since the whole gamertag on USB is brand new to me, um... how do you put a gamertag on USB in the first place?

Each USB storage allows 8 Gamertags.

If you don't want having to move your Gamertags on an USB Storage between your X360 consoles, "clone" them.

Steps,
Create an empty USB X360 Storage so that it's easier to figure out which file is your Gamertag.
Move the Gamertag to the USB Storage.
Use USBXTAFGUI_v44.exe on the PC to view the files in the USB Storage.
Copy the Gamertag file to the PC hard drive as "backup".
On X360 console, move the Gamertag to the X360 hard drive.
Back to the PC, use USBXTAFGUI_v44.exe, copy the "backup" copy of the Gamertag file back to the USB Storage.
Go to other X360 console, move the Gamertag to the X360 hard drive.

I know some gamers will say Microsoft will ban you for "cloning" your Gamertag. There's no hacking done to your Gamertag. Each time each of your "cloned" Gamertag logs to Live, it will be updated with latest gaming progress. There is no hacked data in your Gamertag that is uploaded to Live. I have using this method for 4 years using the old X360 memory card before X360 allows USB Storage.

^^

That answered my question...you can clone the contents of an Xbox formatted USB drive.....so no need to use the Datel memory card backup system.

Either way works and there are no problems unless you log on the same tag from both boxes at once.

I see what you did there with that title.

....

Thanks. We have six in the family, so that's good they all will fit on one USB.

Is it easy to put the tags onto the USB drive?

Simple as copy and paste...
you go in to system>memory>profiles (I believe)...select which one>copy, or move...then you get the option to send to the USB drive...

yeah its easy. I currently carry my USB between both, but I may look into cloning. However, I need the USB to move game saves back and forth..

cloning with usbxtaf is as simple as drag and drop

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and ideas here. It seems Microsoft needs to figure this out to make it a bit easier.

Thanks again.

Which to me begs the question: Why can't I have my GT on more than one console? I thought the "recover gamertag" option was a nice, easy way for me to get up to speed on a new console. I later realized it was zapping my GT from my other 360s. Thumbs down!

I'm sure the original intent was to make it inconvenient for people to share gamertags.

My theory on why only one console is allowed to have the Gamertag is if you leave it on the console after you sell it or forgot to remove it from your friend's console. Unlike PSN ID, putting a password on Gamertag is optional. Microsoft could display a warning to add a password when you move your Gamertag. With PSN ID, if you forgot to delete your account from a console you sold, you can easily change the password on the web or another PS3 console. Another reason is once you login to Live with your Gamertag, there's no way to request for a password when you buy something off the Marketplace. On PSN, you can set to always request for a password when you want to buy something from PSN Store. Personally, I don't mind leaving my Gamertag/PSN ID on my friend's console but if I don't want anyone to have access to my funds on my account. Or the reason is Microsoft simply wants to be the Gamertag restricted to one storage at a time.

As for multiple consoles login with the same Gamertag "cloned", only the last console that login will stay on Live and previous console will get auto logout from the Gamertag.

If you play Halo Reach and "cloned" your Gamertag to multiple consoles, the single player campaign completed chapter is stored in the Gamertag file. Only the mid progress is stored on a save game file. So, keep track of which copy Gamertag that has completed the Halo Reach campaign because other copies of the "cloned" Gamertag will not get synced when login to Live.
