Volume control on HTPC versus Receiver

I don't know much about audio, so sorry if this is a dumb question. Is there any difference, from an audio quality perspective, between adjusting the volume on your HTPC (win 7 running XBMC for example) and adjusting the volume on your receiver? I have intuitively assumed that it would be best to have the computer volume all the way up and then adjust the receiver, but I don't really know if this is the case or whether it would make a big difference. I ask because I have a remote to control XBMC on the HTPC but it's not a remote that I can program with IR functions.

Nope .... may not want the volume all the way up on the HTPC ... you could overdrive the receiver's inputs.

Wouldn't it depend on the type of connection (digital vs analog) that you're using? If it's a digital connection, I would have thought it was impossible to overdrive the input. Rather, you'd then be using the full dynamic range of the digital connection.

I'm not familiar with XBMC's options, but a USB-UIRT could potentially solve the IR problem. I use one with SageTV and a FireFly RF remote to control my receiver.
