Official Sony NX720 Owner's thread (KDL60NX720, KDL55NX720, KDL46NX720) - Page 54

So what is the difference between the KDL-60NX720 and the KDL-60EX720??

Why is there no XBR (full array LED) for the 60 inch? They have both KDL and XBR for the 65 inch and the 55 inch.

Hi I just want to get some opinions on what a stuck pixel is. I have a small white dot that's about the size of a ball point pen head on the extreme lower right corner of my screen. It is only there on certain cable channels though. If it was a stuck pixel wouldn't it always be there in the corner regardless of what channel I had it on ? This makes me think the small white dot is part of the cable source but it just seems odd and it can be really distracting.

OK, so my parents' kdl55nx720 arrived today. So far, so good. No apparent light leakage from the edges and no overly obvious flashlighting.

However, I do have one question: Is it possible for the headphone jack (analog audio out) to be in use at the same time as the TV speakers?

Now, before giving me an RTFM answer, I'd just like to point out that the FM is in the TV itself, and because the TV is at my parents' house (30 minutes away), I don't have easy access to the FM... I tried to find it in the limited time I had to set up the TV. They really "need" that feature - at least for the moment until they have some sort of external AVR, which could be a month or two - because my grandfather has a very hard time hearing the TV and his wireless headphones help keep everyone else in the house sane...

Now, with that said, I'll just point one thing out that I was thrilled with: My parents' kdl32ex710 is a great bedroom TV, and her love of that was part of the driving force to get the nx720. However, I never could figure out tonight why it didn't play well with their UPnP server on their NAS. (Technically it's my youngest brother's NAS.) In a nutshell, the ex710 only shows a few files as available from the NAS. The nx720 works fantastically with the NAS/UPnP. The reason: apparently it can play mp4 files whereas the ex710 only plays mpeg2 video from UPnP.

So, just one more tidbit I hadn't seen (or remembered seeing) elsewhere.

Not to burst your bubble...I think the NX could end up being an excellent 2D television but it doesn't sound like 3D is really a strong point with Sony TVs. If you're really into 3D you might wish to try before you buy if you can.

Ordering tonight unless you guys can find me a better price, the family is excited to watch toy story in 3D.

B&H has it for $1450 with free shipping.

Sears dot com has this TV on sale for $1,399 with free shipping AND a free Narnia 3D bundle. So that's the deal for this set through Feb 4th.

What I did was I called up Amazon. I asked them to pricematch Sears, which they did, but they could not give me the free bundle. Sears would have charged me tax, Amazon does not. I realize that the cost of the kit = tax but Amazon has a great return policy. Simultaneously with this purchase I am having the delivery guys pick up an LG LW5600 which I purchased in early December that has been a total dud.

So $1,399 out the door, no shipping, no tax is the best price for this TV right now.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/dap_10153...00100383&aff=Y

fine print:
"Online Only! Free home delivery on top brand TVs over $499 Sold by Sears! Discount seen in cart. Offer ends 04-Feb-2012 See details.
Purchase this Sony LED Smart TV and get 3D starter kit FREE! Items sold by Sears. Offer ends 04-Feb-2012 See details. "

You won't see the price until you checkout. Add TV add narnia 3d bundle, check out and you'll get $1,399. The narnia kits are going on ebay for $85 and up. So your net cost for this could be closer to $1,314!

Also, I scheduled delivery of my set for the 13th but now I'm thinking I may push it back by a week or so to see if any other deals come along in the month of February as the 2011's get phased out. Maybe an HX820 for the same price? It would be nice to have a 240hz panel.

FYI - the LG LW5600 I'm giving back (flashlight and clouding so extreme in all color/light conditions even LG reps agreed that the set was probably a dud) had awesome passive 3D. It's 2D to 3D on-the-fly conversion was equally impressive. If the kids dig 3D and you want them to shut up and be glued to the tube you can't go wrong with half a dozen plastic $5 glasses... light, no synching, no charging and easily replaceable when inevitably destroyed.

The set itself wasn't bad either.Though, I was originally sold on the wide viewing angles of an IPS panel but what I got was a very washed out picture, albeit... at all angles.

Received my 60nx720 a week ago, and have mostly been in ave. But sadly mostly because of the size (came from 40"), as I've found 2 things that really annoys me.

First picture I guess is some serious clouding (?), which mostly is not a problem in normal viewing. However between changing channels, and also if I set it to game mode and turn "LED dynamic control" off (more or less regardless of backlight setting), it gets stupidly ugly. Maybe the clouding is exaggerated a bit in the picture, but during night viewing playing ie. on PS3 thats more or less the level (with "game" setting). Is this way off ?

Second phenomenon annoys me the most, I guess its called bleeding ? However, as shown the problem is not only a brighter picture close to the edges, but there are also what appears to be some darker lines. This problem arises from the bottom right corner, and can be seen for both half the hight and half the width of the screen. Its easiest to see in darker colors, when the picture is bright almost nothing is seen. In the below picture I have tried to make it as obvious as possible, in normal viewing it is not quite as evident. Anyone else have this, or have an opinion on it ? Next monday a repairguy will pay me a visit, but I am uncertain if I should insist that they fix it, or it is rather normal and I'm just being too picky..

Thanks !

Also, there appears to be a thin band of light running vertically and horizontally along the edges of the panel (in the second photo). I've seen this described before on a Sony owners thread... can anyone tell me if this too is normal?

Im right with you. I came from an SXRD60 which besides eventually turning green for the 3rd time was a great picture. But mine has this clouding and it annoyed the you know what out of me. So I contacted Sony and they have a new replacement coming (in house exchange). My concern I don't think it will be different. Is the a manufacturing problem or a design problem. I don't see it 90% of the time, but it's the 10% that really sucks. I will let everyone know what the results are of the replacement. But mine looks yours, with one corner very pronounced blob of light.

Do you think "we" account for a very a small percentage of sets going out of the Sony warehouse? I will not pay $1,500 for a set that looks like crap. So if the NX720 does not work out I may ask Amazon to replace it with another LG or Sony which will make that my third set.

Thanks Krause, in which corner is your light ? I think I can live with the clouding, I don't think I've ever seen it ie. in a movie, it mostly gets ugly when switching between sources and stuff like that - or credits after a movie. Not a deal breaker for me, just a bit irritating. Anyway, would much rather live with this than plasma-buzzing, now that would make me hit the wall with my head..

My main problem is the second one, it draws much more attention and looks like a mirror with facet (hm don't think thats the right english word, but a mirror that have been cut at an angle on the edges)

The second picture is the crease and my 46HX823 has it on all four sides.

Hi Aaron, bugger that sucks... have you heard of anyone totally without the crease ?

I have, but its hit and miss, as i say i have it on my set and the way i look at it, most of the content i watch has noise at the edge of the picture (with full pixel on) so it masks the crease. I have some slight clouding but with local dimming on it is a non issue. But other than that i have no stuck/dead pixels etc so for me its not worth the risk.

You could get one without however you could end up worse off. If it bothers you maybe its worth the gamble.

Upper left corner, probably a circle about 1 foot in diameter. I don't even want to look at the other problem you are describing (better I don't know because that is all that I would see). But I do think the picture is as good as the SXRD, I would not say that it is significantly better though. When you talk about buzzing, on the SXRD the fan would run loud and that TV generated alot of heat. The beauty of thinness and less power, etc...sells it for me. So I think it is the best option on the market today.

Technically I only paid $100 with all the money I got from clover and serve give aways. So I didnt care if it was open box. Before the tv was delivered amazon told me they would price match a new tv for $1400 if I decided to exchange it. They told me i would have to pay an extra $50 for shipping so they told me they would charge me a total if $1449 if i decide to refuse or return the delivery. I thought that was great being the tv was an open box item.

Got the tv and it was like in new condition. I couldn't find a single scratch, looks like it was never open. All the manuals and remotes were sealed in bags. Tested all the features. No dead pixels, nothing what so ever is wrong...I don't think I will even do a price match for a new telvision...I dont see the need to pay an extra $120 when this tv is new.

I was actually about to buy an ex720 new which was $100 more. Glad I came across this model because When i compared the models at best buy the Nx720 had a better display.

would def do an amazon deal again.

Update. After looking through this post and seeing the dattached glass to the right othere posted about I checked mine and bam mine is slightly detaching too. Its very minors, I was thinking about returning it to amazon and just get a new tv that was price matched at $1449, I thought I should call sony first.

They said they no long repair this part so they are sending me a new replacement tv, same model with the same warranty until next year.
Pretty good customer service.

Hello,
I have a friend with a KDL 55NX720 that shuts itself off when he attempts to place the TV into a 3D Mode. Then it gives a 4 Blink Error code.

Does anyone know what the 4 Blink Error Code specifically relates to?

Thanks

I hope overtime the gorilla glass does not become detached on my set. That would suck big time. I guess as long as Sony covers it for the year it shouldn't be too bad. My Amazon return window closes tomorrow.

Interesting that you got them to send a replacement straight away, instead of having them order the wrong parts and send out a tech first. Hopefully I'll get a quick turnaround on that once the tech gets out here.

Maybe is due to location? I am in maryland and the sony #that called me was in florida.

I had to fax them the bill of receipt. So They said they will send me a new set and then schedule the old one to be picked up.

I understand that you wish to have Closed Captioning (subtitles ) when viewing Netflix on the TV. Unfortunately, the Closed Captioning is not supported by BIV devices. Therefore, closed captioning cannot be displayed even if the Closed Caption (CC) setting in the television is turned on.

Kind of sucks....

Thanks so much for checking!

I turned the TV on today and there was a new update. I downloaded it and now my netflix app disappeared not even the netfix button work on the remote. Has this happened to anyone?

Yes, I think the "App" options are a bit fragile. It doesn't take much to throw them off, literally. That said, just go to the tool and try to re-install.

Same thing happened to me. You need to go into the menu to update Internet content, or some like that.

I updated as well but I still have the Netflix app.

I have seen the lines on the left and right side of the screen, but, they are not noticeable unless the screen is all black or all blue. Also, after reading thru this thread a bit, I have also noticed that the gorilla glass is detached a bit, maybe a few millimeters, on the top and bottom of the right side of the tv screen, and on the lower left of my tv screen. The upper left side of the tv screen appears to not have this problem at this present time. I own a KDL-46NX720. Do any of you who are experts or more intelligent than me about this problem, forsee this being a major issue? Thanks
