The "official" Yamaha RX-V671 thread. 7.1-Channel Network AVR - Page 42

I bought this receiver and hooked up an AT&T Uverse receiver, Apple TV (3rd gen/2012), and an Argosy media player via HDMI (output is thru two Polk M3ii front speakers). I'm finding that the volume is quite low for output from these sources. If I play music from my iPhone via the Yamaha app (i.e. directly to the receiver), the audio volume is great. But with the same volume level on the phone, if I stream to Apple TV->receiver, the volume is very low. Also, the volume for the Uverse and media player sources are low as well.

I then plugged in optical cables from the Apple TV and Uverse receiver to the Yamaha and adjusted the configs for the two HDMI sources on the receiver to obtain audio from the optical inputs. No difference. So I'm ruling out HDMI as the culprit since optical also results in the same volume. I could of course crank up the volume on the receiver but that doesn't seem like the right solution and may also result in more noise?

Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or can shed some light on what I can do to resolve this. Not sure if I should try another receiver, maybe a Denon 1912. Thanks.

OK will try again. If I want to hear what is playing off of my Directv dvr in the kitchen and living room, should I use presence if the signal is digital only? Will that work. Or should I use zone 2 and just hook up some RCA's off the stb as a seperate input? That should work, but I would then worry the sound may not be in sync between zone 1 and 2. All I want to do with this receiver is use it like all my past receivers which could output a and b speakers at the same to time regardless of input. Any help is appreciated.

Now that I think about this, presence may be my only hope of a "b" speaker set up because I do not want seperate volume fro zone 1 and 2. I want my "b" speakers to be controlled at the same time as my mains. From what I read so far, the new denon and pioneer receivers wont work for me either. I can believe an old school feature I us this difficult. Was it a patent thing or something? A +B operation was on all of my past HDMI capable units. Very frustrating.

MultiZone seems to be the way most receivers are going now. People want to play differences sources in two rooms. Unfortunately this is not what you want.

Do you have the 671 or are just reading about it? If you have it, try both options you mentioned.

The Marantz 5005 will do what you want, it has a Front B speaker setting.

It will be here today. I am just quite frustrated by this one aspect as I see many others in the same boat. It just seems like a backwards step in technology to me. My guess is that the presence setup may work, but according to the documentation, this should not pass digital either but that def would not make sense. So I may try that or just use the L/R pre-outs and go to my existing Pioneer for remaining speakers. I would have to assume that wold work, but what a waste of a second receiver.

Thanks I will let you know how it turns out.

I just hooked up my RX-V671 yesterday. I love it.

I am discovering new things about it every minute.

Question: Using the net radio built into the receiver the on screen image just shows me the radio station logo and name. Is there a way to get the screen to show a bit more information such as what is playing " now'?
Check that you are not muted. I have an older Yamaha and I was confused for a bit after the mute button had been inadvertently hit. The yammy mute reduces volume rather than killing it completely.

I've been watching this receiver and will probably pull the trigger on it. Of course, now Yamaha it's introducing their new line up. It looks as if the 573 is comparable to the 671, and adds 4k video to the equation. But at 549 / 599 dollars, I can't see the justification. Not only that, but the 573 doesn't have the internet radio.

Am I missing something?

573 is a step down from the 671 in my opinion.. it looks like they have added airplay but have taken away net radio(possibly) and have dropped the size of the power supply down to make it Eco friendly.. I guess if you need apple airplay it may be for you, but is that really worth the price difference. 4k pass thru seems ridiculous to me, unless you don't plan on upgrading your avr within the next 5-10 years, your not going to use it. What sticks out the most to me is the power drop from 1channel driven to 2ch, compared to previous models. That is not a good sign, imo.

The video on the Yamaha site says you have access to over 12,000 internet radio stations with the RX-V573.

I thought it was the 600 series and higher that had the better speaker amplifiers?
(But I'm far from an expert on Yamaha receivers).

Thanks for clearing that up. Someone mentioned that it didn't have netradio, which is why I mentioned that it possibly didn't, since I hadn't checked up on that myself yet. I still feel like the 671 is the better avr of the two though.

Should have grabbed this earlier in the week when it was down around $330 on Amazon. Seems like stock is being used up everywhere and prices going up in preparation for the 2012 models! Dang!

I have owned this for a couple days and seems great, coming from RXV-1400, which had a little more ump.

Is is possible to listen to one source IE pc audio input and viewing another source IE: cable tv. All imputs are currently HDMI with out put to tv.
I could connect pc optical if needed, no need for network as PS3 is running tverstiy.

Also the remote programmed for Scientific Atlantic 8300 pvr and it works great just wondered if there is a button on Yamaha remote such as previous channel, thought maybe it was return button but doesnt seem to work.

Any insight into these questions is greatly appreciated, working my way through the manual

Hello all, I just purchased a 671 yesterday at best buy. They price matched the Fry's ad for $319. I was surprised that they didn't even call to see if it was in stock.
I am retiring my Onkyo 606 after starting to get the dreaded HDMI handshake issues caused by the caps going bad.
It's good to see such an active forum. This is my first Yamaha receiver(I own a couple of their motorcycles) and I know I'll have some questions once I get the new yammy hooked up this weekend.

I'd be coming from the same model actually, just wondering what you mean by that? Raw power, options, etc?

Great forum! Love the 671. I have a blue-ray and Apple TV (new) connected to my receiver. I have the HDMI output to the TV via HDMI. Unfortunately, the HDMI cable is wired such that the cable is visible and not attractive. I tried to use a balum and existing Cat 5 cable, but that cable is greater than 200 feet, beyond the capability of the Balum. No video or audio. A call to Atlona confirmed this limitation. So now I'm looking for a wireless HDMI options. I'm considering getting the Belkin ScreenCast AV4. Has anyone tried this, or any other wireless HDMI solution with the V671? Any loss to video or audio signal? How about in the pass thru mode? Thx!

The 1400 seemed to have a little more power at lower volumes, I would of kept it but wanted hdmi. 671 seems equal at mid/louder volumes.

Can anybody give insight to my previous questions?

Are you guys having trouble connecting wired pc to the 671? Or does it only act up if you try doing wireless?

I would just go wired if I buy it.

Also, are you able to stream movies over ethernet cord from PC to the reciever? Or does that require HDMI? Thanks

I am streaming music from my wired PC with TVersity DLNA Server. PC and 671 are wired connected through a switch and work great. As far as I know, 671 can only stream music, not pictures, nor video.

How ugly are we talking about? Doesn't look like the alternative options are that great. Is there no way to get the receiver closer to the TV? You might have better luck posting in http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=168 to find an option. I'd imagine the integrity of the signal would depend on distance and any potential interference just like WiFi.

Oh okay, I'm in the same boat with desire to upgrade, but I never had to push the 1400 above -14 or so (and usually in the -30s), so I'm okay with a little less power.

As far as mixing and matching video and audio from two different HDMI sources, I doubt it. You may be able to switch from a HDMI source to an analog audio only source and keep the original video, but I don't think it can process two HDMI sources simultaneously.

Question of the day:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do I lay down the bucks for the Rx-v673 or jump on a RX-V671 while they last and are going cheap? MY RX-V665 is really getting dated and it's time to go 3D.

The 667 is 3d capable. The question really should be do I need the airplay and streaming features the 673 brings.
oops on my part I have the Rx-V665 not 667

LOL. Anywho, 3D is overrated. The question still applies.

I've just ordered a Yamaha RX V671 to replace my current A/V receiver which has the dreaded HDMI switching problem (Onkyo 606). I've been going through the manual in anticipation of setting up the 671 this weekend and i have a question.

It seems to be saying that I *MUST* direct the audio out from the TV and into the 671. But why? The Onkyo takes care of the surround sound audio by itself, with nothing required out from the TV.

Did I buy the wrong receiver? By the way, the TV is a Samsung LN52A650 that I absolutely love. But I cannot imagine that passing the audio from the TV to the receiver is the right thing to be doing ...
