I just picked up this receiver, and I love it, but I do have one small issue.
We have some TV stations here that broadcast in Dolby Digital (5.1). The problem is that they broadcast in this format, even if the source is in stereo, so the DD signal only has two active channels (L/R).
On my old receiver (HK AVR-354), it would usually still detect this, and use PLII. Even if it didn't automatically, I could, at least, manually select it. However, on this receiver, it seems that if it detects DD, you're stuck.
Has anyone else found a solution to this? I'd love to be able to force PLII, on a DD signal, but any setting that will allow the speech to come out of the center channel would be tolerable. I've found that by setting the audio to "7.1 stereo" it will output the L/R channels equally to the front/surround speakers, and also merge them on the center. That works, to a point, but it's got a bit of an echo, since the same signal is coming from multiple speakers.
If it matters, I have the latest firmware installed (1.13).
Also, if there's absolutely no way, but you know of a comparable receiver that will do this, I'd be interested... especially if it's the Pioneer VSX-1021. When Best Buy couldn't fix my HK, they replaced it, and I could choose from any of their receivers. The three they had in stock were this one, that Pioneer, and the Denon AVR-1912. Honestly, I went with the Denon first, and it had this issue. However, it had a few other things I didn't like, so I took it back and got the Yamaha. This receiver has ONLY this one issue, so I'm hoping there's a fix. However, if the Pioneer doesn't have this issue, I'm willing to give it a shot.
