sub amps?

seems many here are using Behringer EP2000/4000.

what about Crown XLS/Xti, QSX RMX/GX?

they seem to be around the same prices in the used market.

hmm...no one?

I run a QSC RMX-2450 and love it. Lots of other people run QSC Crown and others. You'll see a lot of EP-2500's because you can't beat the dollar/watt. Yeah the used value will equal new on the lower cost amps. To some it's just personal opinion.

many people also run marathon 5050's although they have some cheaper models with less power that you might consider.

personally, my favorite amps are the crown macrotech/microtech series, and if you can afford to run one of those by all means do it.

The XTi 2 series 2002 and up should be good. There is some doubt about 1002 series' ability to properly amplify down to 20Hz. But since the XTi 2 series is so new, there haven't been any measurements for the "new and improved" XTi series.

I've also seen people using the XLS amps. The difference is the XTis have Parametric Equalizers built-in.

Im not sure I understand the POV, "if you can afford it".

Why spend 2 or 3 times the $$ for the same Watts, SQ??

If someone needs 2000Watts then the EP4000 is THE amp with out question. Certain if someone can find a fancy named amp for the same price the go for it.

There is simply no reason to waste $$$ if people do not have too, no matter how much money they have in the bank.

i am looking for an amp to power 2 MFW-15 drivers, which requires about 250w each.

the EP1500/2000 has the out for these drivers at about ~$200

the XLS402 provides the same power in the same price range.

the QSC GX3, and RMX amps also provide the same output.

i mean, is the EP1500/2000 just that much better and these other amps mentioned?

just wanted to have a few options.

If you can get another brand for the same price, same power go for it. They all will drive your MFW-15 to insane levels.

Find the lowest $$$ option and enjoy.

Oops......NOTE: I hate XLS series from Crown. I have owned the XLS602, XLS402 and they all were just crap low cost amps. Out of all the amps I have owned I never had more issues then I did with those. Others have had better experiences with them.

I apologize but that was just my experience. I was using them with main speakers and the noise floor was horrible on both.

i see, were your mains highly efficient?

There is a used ep2500 on guitar center's website right now for $170, that's an unbeatable value for what you get.

listing #106470422 if you want to check it out for yourself.

You have to call the location that has the amp. I bought my ep2500 from them a few weeks ago for the same price, it was about $15 to ship it and they were very friendly people to do business with, the amp looked brand new as well so over all I was very pleased with them.

just purchased this amp.

i am thinking it probably be overkill for the 2 MFW drivers, but hey i have enough juice to blow the drivers if i ever feel like it.

I'm glad I could help a fellow diyer out. Through all my searching guitar center has the best prices on used gear like this, and they are a pleasure to deal with. The ep2500 was overkill for my AV15-x too, but at least there is plenty power to spare if I decide to upgrade down the road.

almost forgot, at my local guitar center they had 6 foot rca to xlr cables that worked perfectly going from my lfe out to the amp. Only cost around $9 too.

just got the amp today, unable to test it since it's missing the power cord.

it's suppose to come with a power cord right?

the amp is in pretty bad shape, scratches all over the place...oh well...

looks like i have to call them tomorrow for the cord.

some may not like the fan noise, which in certain situations could be noticeable even when modded ( or some may not want to open up the case, void the warranty and mod the fan). Some may not like the inefficient operation that makes a bunch of heat and takes some power to run, even at idle. Some may not like the business plan of the company making the amp.

FWIW I own one of these, it is what it is. My next amp will be a Peavey IPR.

Just ask your IT guy at work for a computer power cord. It'll work just fine if you're only using 500 watts max.
I'd look for a heavy guage power cord only if you plan on using all the power the EP2500 has to offer.

Also, time to read over the fan mod threads for the EP2500 if you're going to use it in the same room you'll be listening in.
And watch out, some EP2400 silkscreening for the toggle switches on the back don't match up with the user manual. At least, that's what I read somewhere. So double-check the manual when setting the switches.

Well, if memory serves, the 1500/2000 is a class AB amp and the 2500/4000 is a class H. At lower output levels, the 2500/4000 will be more efficient and waste less energy as heat.

thanks, i'll try to look for a computer cord.

if not, i think one of those 14awg cord from monoprice or partsexpress will do?
You can get a power cord at Home Depot, Lowes, and many hardware stores.
The connection is standard. You can of course use a connection from an old computer.

so they don't have to be the same voltage, amp, etc.?

Nope, they just have to have a certain gauge size. 14 should be okay, 12 is even better.
