Police: Every Breath You Take, The Classics The Singles SACD

Just got this used on Amazon for $16, and is the first SACD I have heard that I think is absolutely horrible. I mean some are not as good as others, but this is actually bad....I mean, bad, bad.

Is there some way I got a bad apple?

The dynamics are horrible....I was hoping to really hear the pluck of the bass on Wrapped Around Your Finger, but it is just muddy, veiled sound.

I am incredibly disappointed.

Am I the only one out there that thinks this?

SetUp: OPPO BDP 95 --> Integra DHC 40.2 Pre--->Parasound Amp--->Vandersteen 5.1 matched speakers

Generally the individual SACDs were thought to be better mixes than the greatest hits album. Although sa-cd.net actually rates this album higher than many of the individual titles.

There's at least one review there that essentially hates the surround mix though (first one):

So you're not alone. Overall I prefer the individual albums to this one, although if you want the Police in Surround this is your only choice, warts and all...

Well...I actually got it for the high res 2 channel...I dont get into all the bells and whistles approach to multichannel, except select albums where it really works e.g. DSOTM...

I am just surprised at how bad it sounds even in 2 channel...just murky, unclear sound...

Not sure if I got a lemon, or if the recording just stinks....

I am not griping about the surround mix, just the sound clarity, dynamic range etc....

simply stated, it just sounds bad, and I am really not trying to exaggerate..

It is surprising, and disappointing, as I would LOVE to hear √ĄWrapped Around Your Finger" in nice 2 channel.

Maybe I am just nuts

It may be worth hunting down the Synchronicity SACD then. The individual albums have a different mix than the Greatest Hits. Not sure the source is pristine here, but it's a better sounding mix and since you're after 2 channel, it should work for you.

'Course the next problem is finding one that's not ridiculously priced...

I have all The Police SACDs and sonically they're...just OK. I think Every Breath You Take is actually better than the Live SACD. I have an extra copy of Outlandos D'Amour I'll sell for cheap if you're interested. I tend to listen to Sting solo stuff on DVD-A a lot more.

I have this one on a DTS CD. Its ok. It always sounded best when played back on a Pioneer CLD-97. Got some Sting on DVD-Audio, but no Police on SACD.

I think the multi-channel audio of this Police disk is superb, one of the most dynamic and inteligent mixes out there; right up there with Goucho. I have never listened to the stereo mix but found the stereo only mix on other Police SACD's to be nothing to write home about.

I have all the SACDs for the police. The only one that I would say is sub par would be the live version but only because concerts tend to not sound as good as studio albums.

Having said that, the individual album releases are my favorite - greatest hits album is missing quite a bit of material.

If you want an example of a highly compressed album for comparison try the Genesis SACDs.

Other the "Trick Of the Tail" I disagree with that statement although I haven't purchased all of them to know for sure.
