A bit confused: Speaker Isolation & Contact?

A bit confused.

I see some speakers with sharp metal tips, ostensibly to get past the carpet to get hard contact on the hard floor beneath. Others do the same but put the speakers on a hard slab of something with high mass such as maple or marble.

But I also see some putting speakers on pieces of foam to isolate it from the surface it is resting on.

SO, what is the reason for each? And why such a disparate approach? One wants to contact the ground, and the other wants isolation with foam.

Thanks,
UL

Some interesting comments here. Maybe not the full answer. But it's an answer, with an attempt at understanding the situation.

Speaker isolation pads are used to prevent any cabinet resonance from transferring to solid surfaces like hardwood or tile floors, or onto shelving. Some people think that spikes are meant to do the same thing but in the old days spikes were used to keep a speaker from moving microscopically on carpet as the woofers moved in and out. Early spikes were often little more than sharpened set screws and didn't go all the way through the carpet. Larger spikes can also be used for raising the speaker an inch or so or tilting it up a bit, or even making a tower less tippy on carpet but should not penetrate all the way through the carpet.
