Megamind 3D release has better 2D picture quality!

Guys, I have some EXCELLENT news. I now have both Megamind 2D retail copy and Megamind 3D. The 3D version has better picture quality. The aliasing is 99% gone and the picture looks much clearer in general. It now looks like it SHOULD have in the first place and now the PQ is on the same level as other Dreamworks titles like HTTYD and Shrek Forever After. Since the original 2D release was rushed pretty quick to shelves, something went wrong in the encoding of it, and Dreamworks have used a different master for the 3D release. So whether you're watching the 3D disc in 2D or 3D, you're getting better PQ than the 2D disc. Here's a quick comparison, look at the escalator:

I didn't see anything at first, but upon further inspection, the words on the signs in the background are crisper...interesting.

Yeh the main difference is the aliasing on the escalator is terrible in the 2D shot, and there's also weird colors surrounding the aliasing as well. In the 3D shot the weird colors are gone and the aliasing is almost completely diminished. Looks much sharper. Also note the middle statue on the right, his staff, aliasing also completely gone on that

I know there are aliasing problems littered throughout the 2D retail, but I haven't watched the whole movie to know exactly where the worst examples are, if anyone knows of specific timecode(s) that are particularly bad, just ask and I'll put up a comparison.

Aliens vs Monsters 2D and 3D discs had the same thing: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...&postcount=136

Paramount's 2D encoder seems to have major scaling issues. I see it on all most all of their animated content

Interesting... just having a flick through the discs it seems any scenes with Tina Fey's character are particularly bad, the alising around her face is very bad on the 2D disc. This shot in particular shows the difference - look at the outline of her face, but also look at her hair! Her hair is all aliased! Looks shocking! All of this is fixed in the 3D version thankfully. I think that Megamind 2D is a lot worse than the MvA case.... it's not just the aliasing either. It's like the whole movie looks lower-resolution, kinda the same effect if you play a PC game at 1280x720 at fullscreen on a 1920x1080 monitor.

Another thing to mention is that the 2D disc looks a lot worse in motion than what the screenies show... when characters move their heads, jaggies become even more obvious.

The biggest boo-boo is in the opening-credit. Lots of pixelling.

This kind of aliasing happens when the picture is in RGB space but recorded in 4:2:2 YCbCr mode onto a medium, making red and blue half the resolution of green.

I don't know why the people doing the encoding don't see it and report the source delivered as faulty, or why professionals haven't figured out what causes it. But that they don't learn from it makes me angry. I don't have Megamind, but this has happened before to other titles.

At least it's good that 3D has resulted in a non-tarnished release.

Those jaggies are nasty! I have not seen anything that bad since the early days

Alright heres the pic of the beard - look at all the ugly green artifacting in the 2D:

And another shot not long after - pretty much all side-on shots in the 2D version look horrendous, look at the aliasing down Metro Man's character's face and nose, and Megamind's face in general:

Of course I'm saying it's horrendous for a big-budget Dreamworks animated title... if it was something like Alpha & Omega well then it would be normal

Another terrible shot - look at all the green and red on the buildlings! It looks shocking in motion. Look at the side of the white building on the bottom left - WTF?

Watched Megamind 3D last night and it looked great. I can't believe how bad the 2D version looks in the above posts.

For $12.99 at Amazon, I couldn't resist getting the 2D version I don't have any immediate plans to upgrade my projector to a 3D version though.

This should be a recall, not just a price drop. Just curious, does the dvd suffer the same issues as the 2D version? Also, I don't see the 3D version on Amazon. Do they sell it?

I believe it's another exclusive, hence the funny prices on ebay.

Just saw the exclusive package, got it...thanks.

This has been going on for ages with Paramount/Dreamworks animated releases. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is similar, but not to this extreme degree.

KUNG FU PANDA (2D) has the same sort of ringing. You can bet your bottom dollar it would be gone in a theoretical 3D release.

That is some ugly low-pass filtering. I don't think the default settings for the filters in Cinema Craft HD Encoder (I'm assuming they used this, they did for the rest of the Dreamworks titles) are that heavy.

I've spotted the green and purple haloing on some other BD titles as well (most noticeable with white text on black backgrounds).

Confirmed last night, the dvd is awful.

Lowpass filtering was pretty much standard with all DVDs. Most people are shocked when they see what DVD is actually capable of.
