Upgrading from my fluance 5.1 setup (have Boston Acoustics Sub I will keep) with HK AVR 247.

around 1000 is my budget but I will need 5 speakers and a receiver.

What say you?

Polk Monitor 60 fronts

Polk CS10 center

Polk Monitor 40 surrounds

BIC F12 sub

Onkyo TX-SR608

Comes down to a little over $1k but you will get tremendous performance out of it.

2 of these for $124 each ($248 shipped for the pair) for left and right mains
http://www.bostonacoustics.com/VR1-Black-Only-P310.aspx
1 of these for $80 for center
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...ustics-cs225cb
2 of these for surrounds $120
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...coustics-cs23b
BIC F12 sub = $185
= $632

Leaves you $368 for a receiver. I would bump up my budget $10-15 and grab a Denon 1911.

Very hard to beat this deal

-Denon AVR-1911
-Jamo S 606 HCS 3 5.0 speaker set (far superior to that cheapo flurance set)
-Bic F12 Subwoofer

If going this route - I would stretch the budget for the
matching VRC center

Nice catch, I thought I had the right center. Yep, definitely want to stretch, or go for the Denon 591 and you should be really close with $1K and the solution above + the matching center. The 591 still has Audyssey MultiEQ which is a nice feature to have.

That would make a nice system.

in response to what most replies, as I do have a very nice bostin acoustics sub I picked up awhile ago. I dont remember the model number but it is one of their better ones. With that said, and me spending 350 on a reciever and leaving 650 for the 5 speakers, would your recommendations stay the same?

I would lean toward the Boston deal.

any experienced members want to weigh in on this?
The 509 is brand new so probably not much info there yet. Remember it doesn't convert analog video to HDMI, so if you have a Wii or something else that uses component video it wont get converted.
I would just spend the grand on the speakers now and save another $400 or so in the next few months to get a new avr.

Will handle more power, and give you a bigger sound field.

Get the best speakers that you can afford at this time. With
the Fluance, you did not get much of a true midrange sound.

You could think about this, and save for the AVR
KEF

+1 At $399 this Jamo set is perhaps the best value you will find. I will look and sound beautiful and will leave you with the most money left over for a sub and an AVR

Well it depends on the source it is being watched on. Some people may rather have their HDTV/PJ do the upconversion anyway if it has a better scaler.

This is definitely something to consider. Saves you from wondering "what if" because you are trying to find bargain speakers.

****UPDATE****

Alright I pulled the trigger on the Denon 891 for $350 tonight at Fry's.

So now all I need are 5 speakers (have sub already) and I am set. I have 800ish dollars to work with. I don't NEED to spend the full 800 if I can find something cheaper that does a good job but that is around my max budget, I am a little flexible. I want the most bang for my buck.

The Jamo S 606 HCS 3 will come in at half your budget

The Boston's are another possibility

I know this is an impossible question but... how much better are the Boston's than the Jamos. And how much better are the Jamos than my starter Fluance. I just don't want to upgrade and wish I would have upgraded more. I want a very noticeable difference.

I can not speak for the Jamo's - however, I would simply pick them
over the Fluance anytime. From their bookshelf speakers on up, I
have not owned or heard a bad Boston speaker yet. To put it simple,
the Boston is good period. However, I will not tell you, that you must
buy it.

I really like my Boston sub and I have a lot of faith in the bostons. I really appreciate your help so far I just want to make sure I make the right decision before I pull the trigger

how do similar priced Polks compare to the BAs? They seem to have absolutely fantastic reviews on amazon, out of nearly 100 reviews not a single one under 4 stars

Speaker selection is highly subjective but I would take the Boston VR1 over the Polk Monitor 70 every time. Speaker reviews on Amazon tend to be done by people that have never had better than HTIB speakers in the past and are just blown away by anything higher up the food chain. That's not a slam on the reviewers, just an observation that most have limited experience with better speakers. Personally I like these Infinity P363 a lot better than the Monitor 70 but the BA VR1 might just be a tad better.
