TWC, SDV, CC's & Tuning Adapters: Does any of this actually work together

I love how these MSO's with the support of Cable Labs, the NCTA and the companies that sell the related equipment have managed to make the possible, impossible just to force one to rent their equipment.

Looking over the following links, seems to add to the confusion.;
http://www.cablelabs.com/opencable/p...rd_primer.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CableCARD
http://www.missingremote.com/blog/my...s-ocur-and-sdv

The situation is as follows;

TWC Northeast,
First digital tier (unsure if any HD channels are included (other than OTA) due to confusing results with their channel lineup),
CableCard (not sure if it would be V1 or V2),
Sony DVR for the recipient of the card.

My current understand of these Tuning Adapters (Tuning Resolver) is, TiVo is about it for compatibility and the Sony DVR is out.

So, the question is; other than 'On Demand', PPV & SDV, would a CC work for encrypted channels that are not in those three categories?

Although a older article, this was interesting. Anyone know of the outcome?;

I'm really surprised that someone didn't create a 'sticky' on these subjects.

Other than the Cisco STA1520, what other Tuning Adapters are available to MSO's?

Don't be. The number of CableCARD users that live in SDV areas is miniscule.

Only due to consumer ignorance (and laziness), MSO greed and lack of thought out regulation.

Linear (non-SDV, non-VOD) channels will work with any CableCard device. SDV requires a tuning adapter, the Cisco STA1520 on Cisco headends or the Motorola MTR700 on Mot headends. Any CableCard device with a USB port can theoretically use a tuning adapter, it's just a matter of adding the support for it and possibly getting it recertified by CableLabs. I wouldn't count on any discontinued hardware getting support added because it would cost money, but anything new that comes out will support tuning adapters out of the box.

Are those the only two TA's so far?

The only ones I know of. Why would there be any need for more?

There's not.

Competition?
Why have more than two choices for anything then?

I'm not sure you understand the point. A tuning adapter has very little function and must be compatable with the specific STB being used. With the already discussed lack of demand, the financial potential for a third party to offer one is nil.

The only reason they exist is because MSO's required Moto & Cisco to supply them.

Competition with completion.
I do understand the purpose, with all the choices with just about everything out there, it's surprising there are only two suppliers of equipment. What's next a merger between both of them?

Bottom line, SDV is not fully necessary.

Cable providers do have good reasons for continuing to supply analog channels, even if most of us wouldn't make that choice. SDV is a reasonable solution when it works correctly, and the odds of that happening are improving because of the FCC's mandate that it work correctly and support at least 4 tuners per TA.

Which depends on just what is selected to be switched or not switched.
