Does your 2011 Samsung "D" plasma have brightness pops? - Page 13

It would be nice for all of this somehow blind people to just spare ourselves....have you guys ever watched a tv that works properly? How can you not see the pops? Please!

I upgraded from an older Panasonic plasma that never had such sudden changes in brightness.

Great. i finally decide I want to purchase this tv and now I read this. There is apparently no tv that's evenw atchable. the Panasonics fail many areas in CNET testing. They also havea green blob issue. This samsung has the features I want, but according to people in ehre it's unwatchable. The leds apparently give me a headache. I have no choices which can even work without defects. Having flaws is one thing, but these aren't just flaws.

By the way, CNET is becoming evry unreliable. How can someone's top 5 tvs ALL have major defects? The Samsungs have this. The Panasonics did have it when they were reviewed and also had the green issue. The Sony ahs the crease. five mdoels. Five all have defects. NOT shortcomings. Actual defects. Meanwhile almost all other brands are defect-free. How int he world can a set with fluctuating brightness or green blobs of cells or a peeling screen be rated as best tvs? This is ridiculous to the point of me ahving no choice left other than an LG led which has its own issues, but no defects.

This is not a defect, these brightness issues are caused by intentionally designed features! The main goals are reduced power consumption and overall picture quality "improvement".
The only problem is that they can't be (easily?*) disabled by the user. (Another notable problem is that manufacturers seem to never learn that their "image improvement" features can cause more damage than good and it's better to "do nothing", not to mention these "behind your back" actions...)

(*An unofficial fix seems to come soon. But it's way too difficult and dangerous for average users, and it also violates warranty, etc, so...)

I concur , never see them at all with C.S. and i love the way it looks, I also
never see it watching sports, netflix all the time. occasionally on cable.
its not enough to be an issue for me, I agree should never happen though!

I may buy one and just see since worst case scenario is I can return it, but it's depressing that it could have this issue.

It's a great tv regardless and if you notice some people say they don't see it at all. You might be one of those lucky people.

Not to mention I ahve very abd vision. lol But for brightness fluctuations I don't think my vision will keep me from seeing it. I'll probably buy this and hope for the ebst and if it doesn't work out then try a panasonic. if neither work out for me I'm screwed and can pretty much only get the lg led at this point.

Cinema Smooth is greyed out on my set, can't select it...I'm in movie mode running larry's settings which look awesome, but the brightness pops are unbearable.

Running an HTPC, Bluray player, and cable box through a Denon receiver pushing to HDMI input 1 on the pn64d7000.

Any reason why I wouldn't be able to put it in CS?

Got my Samsung PS59D550 from BestBuy UK around a month ago.
This is a big issue and problem. Cannot believe this hasn't been fixed, it's obviously a firmware issue and needs an update.
Samsung fix this ASAP, there is no excuse for this poor quality of a TV. I HATE YOU! lol

Just wanted to also say i've written 3 reviews on play.com, bestbuy, and amazon explaining the brightness pops.

PN51D6900 (Canadian 6500)

Hello guys, I own my PS51D550 since 2 weeks here in France, I was afraid about this pops but...

I haven't a single one and trust me I am very " maniac " about PQ.

My set is from Hungary, August 2011, firmware 1024 onboard.

There's also a second sticker on the back, not the one with the serial number on which is written " version 2 ".

There's no visual external differences on my set, so why version 2 ? Hardware differences ?

I can't have the 10 points calibration on this one, changing model number does nothing special.

I have a new PN59D6500 and haven't seen anything weird yet. Admittedly, it is still new, only about 20 hours on the break-in slides, but I've watched three movies so far and no issues. And no buzz. Fingers crossed that it stays that way.

How does one determine the manufacture date on the set? I have the 64" series 8 plasma. On the back there is a sticker with the serial number etc, but no clear date. Is it somehow derived from those details?

WHat!!?! Where? How? Please more information! I'm quite happy risking the "warranty" (12 months..lol) on my cheapo 51D450 to get rid of this annoying "feature". I mean it's so obvious when you are watching the Formula 1, on every lap it's POP POP POP at least 3 times per lap. And on the scrolling bar pattern in the "screen burn protection" you can see it popping like crazy as it moves across the screen. There is no way Samsung didn't know about this when they design the TV, they just think that we are all dumb sheep who will not care about their stupid "optimizations"



On mine, the severity of the pops depends on how high the Cell Light setting is. With the default setting of 10, the brightness pops are very subtle and barely noticeable. But for good brightness level I need Cell Light 12, and that produces noticeable pops every now and then, especially with motor sport where there is panning across the screen and varying picture level. Or you could have a look at the Scrolling pattern in the setup menu, on mine that reveals it big time.


Weird...I have the 10 point on my 51D450. Maybe you didn't change it to the right model? I first tried D6900 and that didn't work (the 10p was unlocked, but had no effect on the picture) so I tried D7000 and that did the trick.

On mine, it's on the sticker with the serial number.


I tried with severals settings and scrolling pattern too, not a single pop. I am sure the " version 2 " of the set is the explanation. No one here have a recent version 2 set to confirm. If Samsung did a " version 2 ", there is a reason ( brightness pops ??? ) they must admit the problem with " version 1 ".


Normally it would be the D7000 but no effect at all on mine, I don't know if it's because of the 1024 firmware or my " version 2 " set.

assm0de, everyone keeps buying samsungs so they're probably just lazily laughing their way to profits and not caring to fix it.

At least there's a CHANCE they will fix it. A few years ago you would be stuck with any problem and no cmpanyy would do any firmware fix. Now this eyar there's noe xcuse to still have that issue. Unless there is truly no fix for it.

I got a CCFL lcd for now and have 90 days to return it, so hopefully somethign will get fixed on this or panasonics (their green blob issue) where I can buy a plasma for the first time ever.

By the way, how many of you have buzzing noises? I see people report them and I so don't want a plasma if it's going to buzz, let alone the fbr.

I have a buzzing noise, but it's very faint. If you put the volume up or if don't sit directly in front of the TV, you're less likely to hear it at all.
This buzzing noise is from the screen.

There's another type of buzzing noise which is on the back of the panel where something is loose. This is a louder type of buzzing noise but apparently i've seen that it can be fixed.

Here, through debug mode serial port connection.
I don't want to be loud about it because I couldn't test it yet. Nobody actually looked inside the debug menu on D-series PDPs yet (only LCDs but those have slightly different settings), so I am not sure if the required settings are still there. (They were available for B series PDPs inside Picture_2D. The problem was that the entire Picture_2D is locked in the Service Menu on D-series. This problem seems to be solved with this method...)
I hope to test it soon (as soon as I get a serial adapter).

problem is I sit closer than most. For a 51 inch maybe 5 feet.

I get these brightness pops. It's very rare. Doesn't really bother me.

LSx: The cinema smooth is only accesible while viewing blu-ray. If you still can access it check your source configuration so it output 24 Hz.

i just saw on the australia/new zealand site that the latest firmware they have for d450/d490 is version 1025 dated October 2011. I wonder if it has a fix for brightness pops.

Can I install it on french european model ?

So I would be able to select it when watching from my 24p output bluray player, but my HTPC is feeding .mkv format bluray source movies which I have not tried changing over to 24p output, I assume it's just feeding 60hz from the ATI5450?

Exactly for the first part of your question but I don't know much about HTPC! There could be a setting on you're card or on the player you use to output 24 Hz. But you can check on the TV what signal it is receiving.
