Most of what I have seen on ESPN 3D has been marginal at best.

I agree. The only thing I've ever seen on espn that looked half decent was the masters, but that was only because golf is awesome in 3d.

The golf broadcast in hawaii looked way better though, and that wasnt espn.

ESPN-3D is broadcast in 720p resolution. The Cable companies mostly use 720p/60 TnB format and D* uses 720p/60 SbS format. Is there any possibility that your 3Ddisplay/TV was not set to use the correct 3D format for your source of the ESPN-3D broadcasts.

The quality is just not that high. I also don't believe they have a good idea yet on how best to shoot things for 3D. I'm hoping they will replay some of the Master's Footage, I would have liked to see that.

Wow. I don't even like basketball, and the little bit that I saw of that game yesterday damn near made me a fan. I'll be watching as many live NBA playoff games in 3D as I can, especially if the 76ers do anything lol. I was more impressed with yesterday's NBA presentation than The Masters...

So I'm confused about all of this. I have directv and I keep seeing that the playoffs and finals will be broadcast in 3D. Does this mean every game or just random games from different series throughout the week? I was looking forward to seeing the Lakers in 3D, but it doesn't show their game listed in the guide for the channel.

Which means 1/2 720p resolution= SD not HD= sucks.

HDMI 1.4a 1080i SbS 3D format is also a 1/2 R format since it consists of two 960x1080 squezed 1080i fields contained in a 1080p frame.
The only full HD hdmi 1.4 3d format is the double 1080p packed 1920x2205@24fps format from the 3D BR players and tre PS3.

From what I can tell, EVERY finals game will be broadcast in 3D, but only select playoff games leading up to the finals.

I watched a re-run of some Big East tournament game (basketball) last night, and thought it look reasonably good, considering the 720p T/B format.

It seems to me that Basketball is inherently a tougher challenge in 3D, due to the games being indoors, and the relatively small arena with (often) fans in both the foreground and background. It is therefore tougher to have good depth of field (or depth of focus), compared to a day football game played outdoors, or other outdoor sports. With marginal depth of field you end up creating 3D images of blurry things in the foreground and background.

What I'm really looking forward to is 3D football!

The other funny thing about last night's 3D re-run was that the commentators were wearing 3D glasses (or perhaps just sunglasses???). Are they actually watching studio monitors showing 3D? Or is this just for appearances sake? At various times they also showed clips from prior-year Big East tournaments, which of course were in 2D. But they played the 2D clips on what appears to be a floating 3D box, suspended in front of you....

You and me both!!! There should be no excuse not to have every Monday Night Football game in 3D if they play this season.

How much improvement do you see on ESPN3D vs. watching the game in 2D>3D mode?

(I'm watching on a 59" Samsung Plasma)

The Bottom line is off ESPN for the semi-finals.
On ESPN 3D it's Terry Gannon PBP & Mike Brown doing Commentary.
