it would be quite easy to look at those and get a little bit of builder's remorse... but once again, my F-20 suits me just fine.

Looks like theyre approx 2x the cost(F20) so evaluate your envy accordingly......

How is the sound quality of this sub when compared to the f20?

I've designed and built both styles and I personally prefer a good folded horn due to its low distortion when being pushed hard. It's design filters out the distortion much better compared to the tapped horn. The tapped horn gives more output for a given size when compared to folded but the exposed driver of a tapped horn can also sound more stressed when being pushed hard.

for what its worth, like mike said I have whaled on them and THD is still in single digits at very high spl.

The only folded horn I have is a THT, but its in my living room and not theater room. That being said my ears and guts really prefer this monster. It just seems effortless yet turns my theater seating into a full-on message parlor.

I wish I was more of a numbers guy with data and such but they do more than enough to my ears and room without even really pushing them hard. i have plenty of gain left on the ep4000 but that is only for when i want to whip it out and lay it on the table.

Cabinet is larger and heavier...bracing is not optional...
driver is more expensive...uses more wood per cabinet...

Got lots of data I am sifting through yet. This is from memory.

-3 dB around 16 Hz, ~92 dB at a watt, 1M groundplane, and will take more power before making bad noises than my EP3K could deliver bridged into an 8 ohm load.

92db @16Hz with 1 Watt? or 89db @ 16Hz? Just wasn't sure by the way you posted........

Will the next version have two drivers per horn?

two drivers will cut the cross sectional area per driver in half, while leaving in tact the length. that will reduce the tuning and would be a different design.

Not intended to be a design augmentation, but a question of evolutionary direction. I am clueless on horn design, just was curious if something similar to the DTS-10 was down the road of possibility.

Cabinets get huge with a pair of 15s, that's why these are single driver.

Multiple cabinets is easier than multiple drivers in the same cabinet.

Can anyone with a f-20 built post some waterfalls? I want to see if something I am seeing is related to the sub. (long ringing at 52hz)


EDIT: never mind. Was part of my tripod vibrating :/

BTW the more I look at graphs and what other subs, especially commercial ones can output.... boy am I happy

Model says that's a no-go. The CVX 15 is better suited for use in a tapped horn.

I'd just like to follow-up after a few months of constant usage: this thing kicks ass. hits hard for movies, subtle enough for basic TV watching, and blends really well with my RF-5's when I want to do some 2-channel music. I'm sure I could go after bigger and better, but this thing satisfies all of my needs.

Been busy.

My build was a disaster. Finally drug it outside to meet the chainsaw today.

Radman's are working great. He's been working his way through some other issues (like a sub output that is failing...), and we're both crazy busy with our day jobs. We will do a thread when we have the time.

They are big, but if you have the room, they deliver.

Since I don't have the room, I have doodled up yet another fold idea for me...

I'm interested in this tapped horn as well. I missed out on the Danley's, so I'd like to see something DIY that's designed to play down into the teens!

Would mounting a plate amp on the back panel make a difference? The plate amp would take up 10" x 10" x 4.5" deep inside the box.

Depends on where. Choking the horn path is a bad idea.

I'd put it in a separate enclosure myself. That way changing amps leaves the sub uncut.
Of course - I change subs more often than amps...but that's another story.
