Hey, know one is perfect!
Home Theater Magazine lists two Pioneers in their top picks for 2011, the Elite VSX 52 and the Elite SC 57.

The reviewer's like them and in their reviews was never brought up their dislike for their Sound.
Throughout the AVS Pioneer Forums from the VSX 1021 to the SC 57 a "Poor Sound Quality" post is usually a result of a poor Setup and performing the MCACC a couple of times to get used to it.
Then the follow up post is another question or just a simple, "Wow, Thanks for the help, it Sounds Great!!"
The majority of the posts are for help getting their Apps, Network or Gaming Systems set up right, which is usually just doing the correct tweaks to their Outboard Components so they work with the Pioneer.

I agree with a lot of this. When I first got my 1121, I was pretty underwhelmed with the sound as it was thin. I re-ran MCACC a few more times with no luck. Then I moved my speakers to more ideal locations and set up my MCACC better and the results were night and day. The sound is now very good and I couldn't be more pleased with the AVR.

Setup does appear to be a big factor in dissatisfaction, at least in my case.

I have 2 questions about setting up the 1121 I got this week.

1. Is there a setting that allows true Dolby Digital to come through when available and also converts stereo sources to surround? I'm using HDMI and right now the default runs stereo sound when Dolby Digital isn't available. Are most of you running THX or Pro Logic?

2. I can't find any adjustments for the sub other than on or off. Am I missing something? My older Onkyo had settings for how it would interact with the sources.

I'm replacing an older Onkyo nr-604, but even though I like all the bells and whistles of the pioneer, I prefer the sound of the old Onkyo. It just sounds fuller/warmer. The pioneer consistently sound tinny to me. Thought about getting a newer Onkyo but i had a few reliability issues with the one im having now. I've ordered a Denon 2312 in hopes that I'll prefer the sound from that.

I have used four Pioneer models (up to the SC-07) in my two rooms and have had the same experience. I simply find they lack (for my taste) a little presence. They do sound very clear... just missing the low end thump (not overly so). As an example one TV show always plays the same track before cutting to commercials and with the Pioneers I couldn't hear any low end... Onkyo or Denon it was there. I think you'll find the Denon very close to the Onkyo's sound. I did with the Onkyo 509/609 and Denon 591/1611 in my den.

For those who say all receivers sound the same I'm sure you are right so don't bother starting another rant. I tried all of the above without EQ as well and found the same results either way.

Even though the 1121 says its 7.1 it looks like it can handle two subs from the back panel. Is this the case?
^^^

it has an internal y-splitter, yes...

any ".1" avr can "handle" as many subs as you like by using y-splitters...

keep in mind that this doesn't mean the subs are independent...
Seems to me it should be a 7.2 receiver if it has 2 plugs.
^^^

nope, only 1 channel of processing... it's merely a split before the output jack...

in order to have independent subwoofers (and note, that's not "stereo", that's independent), you would need to purchase a xt32 equipped unit, which will delay/level (but eq together) 2 subs independently...
Thanks, thats nifty regardless. I was also wondering if it could handle say playing one input through an HDMI source (say a CD player) for audio but then play another source (say Cable or PS3) for video? I know my current AVR can only do this with fm radio. If this could do that with internet radio that would be cool, but I'd like it to work with two different sources through HDMI.

not with 2 hdmi connected sources, no...

you could run analog/spdif cables and accomplish this with the use of the "source select" audio function...

LOL, well thats confusing. I only got 1 sub, but still.

Hopefully I can find a reasonable priced avr where I could at least listen to music through internet radio or off the home network and watch something else on my screen without having to have any additional cables running besides the hdmi cables. FM radio alone just doesnt cut it. And you lose sound quality when its not hdmi. (any of these network receivers should be able to handle that since they come from the receiver via a lan cable and not a hdmi connected device, no?)
^^^

why do you think you "lose sound quality" by not using hdmi (in the scenario described)?

the only thing you'd "lose" is the high rez codecs, and those only come into play with blu-rays... also, even on the best of systems, the difference between a high rez and lossy codec on a bluray is VERY subtle (and i mean VERY subtle)...

there is nothing available, regardless of price, that will mesh 2 hdmi inputs the way you want...

I tried basically three ways :
Pioneer - control App
IcontrolAv2 App

Just doesn't seems the ip of the 1121 is visible behind that WIfI receiver .

To answer your question if the receiver (u mean the 1121 or the wifi ?) I don't know .
Not an expert on "subnet" settings ...
But I will appreciate an explanation

Thanks !

I just bought this receiver and I'm having a problem with getting video and sound out of the receiver while connected to my computer. I have a video card with HDMI out and optical sound out.

Connection scenario:

I'm using the DVR/BDR HDMI port (port 6) for video and the DVR/BDR optical port (port 2) for sound. The problem is that when the HDMI cable is plugged in, I get video but no sound. As soon as I unplug the HDMI cable, I get sound but no video. It seems like the HDMI port is stomping on the sound input of the optical cable and I can't get the HDMI port/cable to stop doing that. I have looked at all the settings in the manual and can't get it work.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

For anyone who thinks the sound is thin, try these settings

L/R: 7 6 5 4 3 4 5 6 7 -3
SB/SL/SBR/SBL/C: 6 5 4 3 3 4 5 6 -2

You can play with the trim level to fit your needs, the sound is more full at regular volumes, gets a little thin as you crank it.

how could your settings possibly apply to anyone else???????
I have a few BD of musical performances that would be nice to have sound but not absolutely necessary. I don't know if the money to get the 1121 would be worth it for me over the 1021. I wouldn't use any of the additional features, but the extra power would be nice.
^^^

the "extra power" is insignificant...

if you don't need/want any features that are missing, then go for the less expensive unit...

Good luck trying to get anyone to help you in this forum.

I had to finally get rid of my Pioneer before they would even comment on my problems with it.

you sold yours... so go away quietly... sticking around just to fire shots at other members is bad form, and not necessary...

you need to use the "sigsel" option to tell the avr to get the audio from the optical connection rather than the hdmi connection...
I think "Direct" is my new favorite mode. It seems more powerful and messes with the sound less than other modes.

Or possibly another solution, not sure what video card you are running...

See post below:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1684

I used my SPDIF cable from the video card to the mobo.

Lol

Hate to make your day, but I finally discovered that most of my issues were caused by my PS3 and NOT the Pioneer.

I found out yesterday that:

1) Ps3s are not HDMI 1.4 compliant
2) PS3s cannot decode TrueHD internally or via bitstream while playing a 3D movie period!

All of these would have been good to know while I still was in possesion of my reciever. However I believe the the Onkyo will give me better sound anyway, since i can connect both subs to its 7.2 ports...so it was a win, win.

Anyway, I placed the PS3 on Ebay this afternoon, and just ordered a Panny 210. Thanks for all your help guys.

Solved: Found this in another post.

Simply assign the HDMI and optical to an unused input. For that you need to go into the INPUT SETUP menu, and assign those cables to the same input.

Next, switch to that input. Now, you should be able to see the video from the HDMI input. Next, press SIGNAL SEL on the remote, and bring that to DIGITAL, instead of AUTO. If left on AUTO, it will use HDMI for audio, force it to use DIGITAL (optical).

That should, hopefully solve your problem.

Just got my 1121 and am using a Harmony 890. Everytime I power everything on Reciever, TV and Cable box, everything powers up just fine but then the 1121 powers off and I have to turn it back on manually. Appreciate any help/advice on this.

turn off hdmi control on your devices...

My Pioneer is set up with HDMI control so when I turn my tv on, the receiver senses this and turns on. What you are describing could be that you have yours set up similarly but since you have already turned it on with your remote it turns it off instead of on when it senses it (takes a couple of seconds).
How do I fix? Turn off HDMI control or perhaps I should change the settings on the remote?
