Pioneer VSX-1121 Owner's Thread - Page 8

I have spoken to two magnolia reps at BB in the past 3 weeks. Both told me the unit was pulled due to a "manufacturer defect". This past weekend the rep went so far as to say that Pioneer instructed them to pull the unit. Neither one of the reps could even find the sku in their system so there wasn't even a way to order it through BB.

This information is now 4-5 days old, so who knows, maybe BB can get it. I would bet they still can't.

Haven't gotten hdmi pass thru to work at all. Only tried my cable Dvr, but that's all I want it for. Tried a few different things and no luck.

HDMI pass through worked perfectly for me right out of the box, using dish network receiver, ps3 and 360.

I updated my 1121 with the newest firmware. Pandora is now listed and works great (well, after I spent 20 minutes using the horrible username/password entry box).

I am having trouble getting the vsx-1121-k use my subwoofer when I am using AirPlay. For a while it worked fine but recently it decided to stop working. and I feel like I've been through everything a million times but obviously I'm missing something. Any help would be awesome!

EDIT: Figured it out! Had to turn the subwoofer from yes to plus!

Hi. This my first post ever in a forum so I hope I don't screw up. My 1121 has a problem in that after a few minutes of blu-ray playback the receiver abruptly goes to standby. I put a new hdmi cord and switched to the bd hdmi input but it keeps going to standby. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated

If you've had the unite less than 30 days I would return it and get another one. I've read in a few other forum boards people having simular problems with the VSX-1121. It is more than likely a first run batch error and the more of them they make the less bugs there will be with this unite. Don't get discouraged Pioneer is a good brand most of the time.

I was looking at the Pioneer website and noticed there where three firmware updates. These updates might help clear up some of the malfunctions the VSX-1121-K is experiencing with this batch of receivers. Here is the link. I hope this helps.

There are actually two Firmware updates.

That's not to say that they didn't throw in some other Software changes that are not listed in the description.

I am looking to upgrade from my current VSX-1015. This 1121 seems to be the ticket and is looking like a great deal right now on Amazon.

Is the general consensus that this is a solid receiver (I'm not worried about Airplay).

How about the power section, is this a more powerful receiver than the previous VSX-1021? Does it run cool?

How is the video functionality?

Overall reliability of the unit?

Hi..I have a 1020K...and have two Polk Audio Rti4 speakers, a center speaker and a sub connected to it.

When I run the MCACC - it recognizes my speakers as large....guess this means even the bass frequencies to the speaker and not to my sub..So i go to speaker set up and manually set them up as small...and i have noticed that my sub gets signals now.

however when I do this..there is no save button and when I power off and on my pioneer..it again goes back to "large" speaker status and no signals to sub.

Since there is no save button..what do I do to permanently have the pioneer recognize that I have small speakers and a sub please?

Hi Arnprasad,

Once you go into Speaker Setup and tell it what you have you then need to run at least Manual MCACC or Auto MCACC.
Even though you tell it that the speakers are small, the MCACC will then go through the setup and set the crossover Frequencies etc.

Look at the 1021 Brochure, then look at the 1121 Brochure...The Bold areas on the 1121 Brochure are the upgrades from the 1021.

The Video Functionality is Superb!

So Far so good but like I said above, Time will tell.
There have been two Firmware Updates...The first was for Rhapsody Software changes and not Pioneer's fault.
The second is because some people did not see Pandora listed in the Home Media Gallery,
Look backwards and you will see the post and then Pioneer has the update.
Pioneer has always had great Support..But..You already know this because you own the VSX 1015.

I'll take a stab at it.

The only rumor of units being Pulled is from Best Buy!
To tell you the truth I never saw the VSX 1121 in any Best Buy that I went to.
I was in a lot of BB's the same time that the VSX 1121 came out.
I purchased the Elite VSX 52 and then later upgraded to the Elite VSX 53.
Except for cosmetic looks and 12volt Triggers we could not find any Hardware or Software differences between the VSX 1121 and the Elite VSX52!

Despite this fact no Elite VSX 52 or 53 was ever pulled from Best Buy!
Why Best Buy does not sell the VSX 1121 I do not know.

At this point they seem to be the ONLY RETAIL Outlet that does not!

You can also search this thread at AVS as well as any other Forum that you want and except for the usual few units that experience a hiccup (which is expected when any new product hits consumer shelves)
you will not find any rampant posts about problems that are being experienced!

One problem noticed was that some people did not see Pandora listed in the top menu for "Home Media Gallery" and Pioneer true to it's "Support" reputation just released a Firmware to remedy that issue.

If there is a problem...Trust me ..You would have read about it here!

Whatever BB's problem is, I do not give it a second thought, or even try and figure out their inner workings!
I gave up trying to figure out the Corporate World years ago!

So like I said, unless something pops up to refute this, Buy the VSX 1121 with confidence that it will perform as advertised.
Plus it's Pioneer and trust me, they will be here long after the VSX 1121 has come and gone!

My current decision is between this 1121-K and the SC-35 on sale on costco's website for 750 right now. My only hesitations (I know they may be petty, but I can't get over it for some reason), are that it seems Pioneer is not supporting the older models with their newer apps (icontrolav2), and I'm just getting into my AV setup and want to control everything with an iPad to maximize couch potato status :P

Anyways, for the extra 200$ you get better amps, and some other features essentially. Although it's not supported with their new software basically. Ugh!

You are not the only person that has grappled with that decision!
However I went to Best Buy and they had the SC35 in their Receiver cabinet over the Elite VSX 52.
I had the salesman come into their Studio listening room and set up an Input Source that both receivers could share.
I set the VSX 52 (comparable to the VSX 1121) and the SC35 to the same Sound Field, the same volume dB and both driving the same set of Bowens & Wilkins speakers.

At this point I could just click back and forth between the SC35 and the Elite VSX 52.
We closed the doors to the room and I ran both receivers from soft to loud volumes..matched various Surround Fields and standing with the salesman I told him that I do not hear a night and day or one blowing the other away result.
I further explained that to give up all of the advancements that the new VSX 52 / VSX 1121 offers over the SC35, I just could not see it or I should say Hear it!

In a post elsewhere I listed exactly what was different between the two receivers.

Just remember that the VSX 1121 is a very close brother to the Elite VSX 52.

Bud, thanks so much for the informative response. I'm going to go look at the 1021 vs 1121 as you suggest.

I have had excellent luck with the 1015 and with my efficient Klipsch Synergy F3 system speakers I'm not sure the added power means much. I guess a little never hurts.

I've been comparing to a possible Onkyo nr809 which I think packs a more potent power punch, but also has Audessy, which I have no experience with but it does sound "interesting" but I have no idea if it would improve my sound over the MCACC. Even my dated 1015 MCACC does a great job, and I know the new MCACC is much more sophisticated.

Thanks for the heads up! I've been waiting to upgrade my lame 2.0 setup for what seems like forever. Been following this thread and the VSX-1121-K for quite awhile now and the Newegg special made me bite the bullet.

I also picked up the following speakers:

2x Polk Monitor 70 (fronts)
2x Polk Monitor 60 (also on sale at Newegg) (rears)
1x Polk CS20 (center)
1x BIC 12" down-firing sub

Do you think the VSX-1121-K will need any special configuration to support those speakers in a 5.1 setup? I'm still a little new to the whole home theater audio stuff. I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts on my equipment.

Sweet, thanks Bud. I'm so close to just buying the 1121 because it's literally almost the same guts as the vsx-52 just 150 cheaper and comes with all the lazy things I'd like lol. I guess I plan on keeping this around for ~5 years, I have full confidence this could easily be my solution. I'd also like that extra cash for more speakers so unless theres really a super compelling reason I'm going for that 1121

Hello, I'm interested in this receiver and wanted to ask the question on whether or not the Airplay feature will do video on this unit before I buy it? And if not, what would be a receiver that is comparable that does over this.
