Pioneer VSX-1121 Owner's Thread - Page 10

I got it from Amazon in a day and set it up last night. First thing I did was run the firmware update. Ran the auto sound setup and WOW it sounds great. Also like that the Pioneer SHOWS you all the results of the setup...the Onkyo leaves you guessing on the equalization settings. The Pioneer seems to spend a lot more time and steps doing the auto setup and the results show. The Onkyo 809 auto setup left everything sounding a bit blah...this thing really kicks some ass. (the reason I wanted a new receiver was my 3 year old Yamaha 663 always sounded blah too not matter what I adjusted) Movies are awesome to hear on it. The remote is a bad design to be sure..Onkyo is better in that regard. Too many tiny buttons that all look alike. Also wish it had on screen display of volume and sound modes like the Onkyo had. Overall though this receiver is a keeper. The Onkyo goes back today, and I save about $230.00 as well.

Hi all,

I have a question in regard to HDTV Viewing thru the Pioneer receivers.
I have Time Warner Cable DVR Box HDMI out to Pio and To my Pio Kuro Plasma,
but I will probably be connecting my Pioneers to Comcast Cable in the near future.
I received an advertisement from AT&T for their Uverse System because my DSL service is with AT&T DSL.

Does anyone have their Pioneers connected to AT&T Uverse DVR / HD Boxes or Comcast Cable DVR / HD Boxes??
If so, what do you think?

Thanks,
Bud B
PS. Good move on the Pio AlanBuck!

HDMI "should" all be the same, no point in having a spec if not

Hi Gene,
I was just over at the Elite SC55/57 Owners Thread and a guy with AT&T Uverse Said that he was having problems with Audio dropouts with a Uverse box.

Pacbellguy said,
Quote:

I'm having audio gaps with certain programming on my AT&T U-Verse box via HDMI and optical. It seems to be real common for some reason with audience applause segments, like during The Daily Show on Comedy Central or The Soup on E, but also was happening tonight on the MTV Video Music Awards during some of the louder commercials.
I thought it was the same HDMI problem that the U-Verse box is known about, but hooking it up via optical on my Denon corrected it. It still happens even with optical on the SC-57. It also happens with both HD 5.1 and standard programming.

Update: Ok... it seems to be happening with 2 channel digital sources. For tonight's MTV Awards, the commercials said they were 2-channel digital input and the audio gaps would happen, but as soon as awards came back to DD 5.1... audio was fine.

Then tgetzoff replied...

I had the same problem with AT&T Uverse and an Onkyo NR3008--frequent and constant audio drop outs, in both HDMI and optical, and it was especially bad during the Daily Show. It actually wasn't as bad during 5.1 DD broadcasts. You can "fix" this by changing your Uverse digital audio output option from "surround" to "stereo." Of course, you have to constantly change it back when listening to a 5.1 source. My fix? I switched back from Uverse to DirecTv. TV service providers are like the long distance carriers from 15 years ago--they offer lots of freebies to switch back (although now I'm locked into DirecTV for 2 years).

So, I'm trying to find out if others have had similar problems as well......
I don't want to go to AT&T's Uverse if they are known for Audio problems.
I did not invest into a nice Pioneer Surround System and Speakers for Sub-Par performance from my content carrier.

Thanks,

Bud B

Yes I have the same audio drop outs and are very bad on the Daily Show as well as the History Channel and a couple of others I can't remember what they were. I have asked U-verse and a couple of techs that were here for other reasons. All of response were " We don't know and never heard of it"

No big problems with HDMI from Comcast here..excepting the same one I always have when I run through any HDMI receiver...the resolution won't stick for low def channels...I want it to output 1080i for ALL channels, but it always defaults back to 480i output on low def channels...causing a delay when you switch from HD to low def or vice versa. No audio problems at all though.

Sorry out that. Didn't fully read your post. It seems strange to me that only a few channels would have issues and not all.

Other than that have you tried any 3D content through the AVR?

I might be looking to upgrade early next year and want 3D capability.

Thanks

Question about OSD overlay for VSX-1121-K My two primary sources are ATV2 (HDMI) and Cisco DVR (HDMI) which I output over HDMI. With my current Onkyo receiver, the only OSD overlay I get is volume. When I want to adjust speaker levels, or change the audio processing, this only displays on the receiver itself. Would any of this info be OSD overlay with the VSX-1121-K?

On sale again for 499 at newegg in the cart
post #280 of 3195
It seems like when I have been using the iPad/IPhone remote application and then try to use the IR remote that it doesn't recognize the IR commands.

I use a Harmony remote to turn the system on but it I want to select an internet radio station the iOS remote works much better. Ideally I would use the Harmony to turn it off or switch to watching cable etc., but it seems like the firmware in the unit has trouble watching both remote types at once.

Anyone have any insights/work-arounds?

at last got the 499 price and pulled the trigger
post #282 of 3195
Wow, $499 price again was too good to ignore. Pulled the trigger just now. Was down to the 1121-K or Denon 2312CI, which would have been $620-650 shipped for the best case price from vanns or electronics-export. Another $100 savings and free 3 day shipping is too hard to ignore.

You have to go into the settings in the cable box. Switch it the resolution from hdmi to fixed. That will stop the pauses and resolution changes. This is for SA cable box.

Is the 2 year $80 extended warranty worth getting from Newegg? Thanks!

"Is the 2 year $80 extended warranty worth getting from Newegg? Thanks!"

If it's a warranty your wanting go to SquareTrade.com You can get a 3 year warranty for $89.99.
That's a heck of a price. Wondering if it's worth it vs. going with the Elite VSX-51, which I was considering until I saw this...

I kept looking around for the VSX-52 on sale, but for 499 who cares lol, they're almost the same spec-wise, pulled the trigger

Thanks! That's definitely a better deal! I had an Onkyo 607 and it started having HDMI switching problems just after the 1 year warranty ended. I hope I have better luck with Pioneer. Cheers!

I was looking at the VSX-1121 specs on the Pioneer's website and it gives a check mark to it's ability to connect to YouTube. It makes me wonder, how a mostly "audio" device can bring in a video website...
Has anyone played around with this features? If so, how does it work and moreover look/sound?

Does a check mark in a spec list mean the same as [yes]?

First off a check mark does mean "Yes"

Secondly. if you are talking about the You Tube reference under "Handheld and Internet"
It actually states:" YouTube Video Playback"

"Playback" is not the same as "Connects To."

I'll check the OP manual to see exactly what it states about You Tube..

I just received my vsx-1121 from Newegg and as soon as I run the MCACC calibration the amp shuts off. This happens repeatedly and there is a loud pop before it shuts off. Called Pioneer and they say there is a problem with the amp and I need to return it. Anyone else have this problem?

In regards to the interface with windows 7, it is not nearly as nice as the Denon interface. With the Denon you can control all functions of the reciever on any computer in the house. With the pioneer you have no control of the receiver unless you use your iphone or ipad. The iphone app for pioneer is nice but why not allow you to also control the reciever with any windows PC? I will return the amp to Newegg but they will not give a refund only replacement. Please be advised that this amp appears defective and be warry of buying from Newegg as they will not accept returns for refunds.

Found the 51 this weekend for just a few bucks more, so I pulled the trigger. But $499 is a heck of a deal.

I know how to change it but on the Motorola box it won't stick..once you turn things on and off it goes back to the default again..ugh. Same issue no matter what receiver brand you hook it up to.

No longer a Newegg deal. :-( I was waiting until my paycheck came in later in the week. Wow that didn't last long. I wonder what the rationale is for cutting the price down so quickly, and then going back up? Perhaps stock?

Generate impulse buying. Seems it works for many on this forum
post #297 of 3195
Hey Guys,

I just got a 3D tv today and I am having trouble passing 3d through the 1121. It worked fine directly from my HTPC to my tv but not through the avr with arcsoft or powerdvd. Any have any experience with this issue?

I don't about buying on an impulse. I first wanted the Elite 52 and then back in June when the 1121 came to market. I read user reviews and pro reviews on the unite. That research lead me to AVS Forums. Then a nice raise at work mint I cold have the Pioneer VSX-1121-K.
Two missed opportunities only made me dig my heels in deeper and from there it was waiting until everything lined up and pounce on the $300 off deal. This thread is great about price alerts. Don't get discouraged, keep your money ready at all times. The weekends seem to be the best for hitting the $300 off, hang in there
post #299 of 3195
how often have you noticed it going so cheap, it?

4 in total. Once in July, that was a promo code, $300 off.
Twice in August. One was as I like to call them, "In The Shopping Cart Deal" for $249.00 off. The second August $300 off was another promo code.
The one I hit was a "In The Shopping Cart Deal" for $300 off. I read about that one right here last weekend.

I made a game of it. What I did was Googled [Pioneer VSX-121-K promo code] once a day every day. I also checked NewEgg.com for the "In The Shopping Cart Deal". And last but not least, I check and keep up with this thread.

If you do find the deal tale others!

They have put it out there 4 times that I know of; I don't see why they wont do it a 5th time.

Just make sure you're ready as a moments notice, that is if you really want the unite.
