Try following the instructions on the first page of this thread and reading through the entire thing for a good read.

I felt the same way you did. Hated the way Full Auto MCACC sounded and couldn't believe my ears. After a bit of reading and changing my calibration techniques I now love the sound. I am still a bit amazed that such small differences in setup and the way you do it can create such differences in sound (seems like a better system would be more full proof) but at least I got it working. Best of luck to you. Just be a little patient and I bet you'll be happy.
Key differences for me (that you might have already done). Take these with a grain of salt as some may have made more of a difference than others.
- Use a proper photo tripod
- Use blankets and pillows near the mic location on your couch if you have a leather couch
- Do the 3-location averaging to get rid of any awkward nulls
- Be sure to tweak your sub gain so it reads ~0dB in MCACC, then re-run MCACC at that 0dB set point. Adjust to taste by turning the knob on your sub after MCACC is done to increase bass
- All speakers set to small

She doesn't seem to appreciate what I've done for her in the living room!
