Try following the instructions on the first page of this thread and reading through the entire thing for a good read.

I felt the same way you did. Hated the way Full Auto MCACC sounded and couldn't believe my ears. After a bit of reading and changing my calibration techniques I now love the sound. I am still a bit amazed that such small differences in setup and the way you do it can create such differences in sound (seems like a better system would be more full proof) but at least I got it working. Best of luck to you. Just be a little patient and I bet you'll be happy.

Key differences for me (that you might have already done). Take these with a grain of salt as some may have made more of a difference than others.
  • Use a proper photo tripod
  • Use blankets and pillows near the mic location on your couch if you have a leather couch
  • Do the 3-location averaging to get rid of any awkward nulls
  • Be sure to tweak your sub gain so it reads ~0dB in MCACC, then re-run MCACC at that 0dB set point. Adjust to taste by turning the knob on your sub after MCACC is done to increase bass
  • All speakers set to small

thank you millerh ,i really appreciate the help man i am gonna give it a try tomorrow ,i have the mcacc off and it 's better at the moment dosen't hurt my ears when i turn it up .i will read on more and keep tweaking and will see i have to give it at least till sunday before i decide to take it back .it 's just onkyo with their quirks and i was gonna stay away from them all together do sound fuller and warmer ,they sound right after calibration .
i guess this pio is frustrating me cauz i researched weeks now and it is letting me down when i hear it in action.
oh well ,i 'll take your advice and be patient {maybe read my biblleto calm the demons down}lol .no seriously it does look goreous and lots of tweaking capabilities wich is why i got it in the first place .

No worries. Also, a caveat with the photo tripod thing...my first one was with one of those little 3" jobbers sitting on top of the shipping box to get to ear level. No bueno. You need some space around that mic to avoid close reflections. Second time that worked well was using a tripod that was a good 2' off the couch surface like my torso would be.

i have one of those camera long adjustable tripod ,i did make it to ear level ,i 'm gonna cross my fingers tomorrow when the wife goes out that i'll calibrate again ,she hates the sounds the mic spits out and hopefully that 'll solve the sound

I know the feeling...I waited about 3 weeks before I could properly test out my subs and calibrate them so my wife would get out of the house for a few hours She doesn't seem to appreciate what I've done for her in the living room!

hi again another question, anyone know why the 1121 cost so much $ right now?went to order on wed night from amazon($250 gift card) price in the am was $599 then went to $697 later and has not gone down yet. I read people getting great deals in nov,dec and later in thread(i'm on page 45 so far)from newegg and amazon.I know i can wait alittle but have no working receiver right now. wonder why the 2011 model is so much when i would think they were trying to make room for the 2012 models.dont want an $elite, 1021, 1122 ect. So i kind of have to order from amazon.Any tips or tricks? I have checked back a few times a day and will keep on

My guess is that production has probably stopped on the 1121 and is essentially not available anymore. I have seen this a lot on Amazon where they still sell old models of products for very large prices.

Usually this is also through third parties and not Amazon directly. You can search right now on Amazon for Apple TV. They recently released a new one with 1080p output for $99. But the old 720p version is on Amazon for $178 through other third parties. Doesn't make much sense to me, but seems to happen all the time as new models come up.

1121k was a great deal @ $400 because it is basically an Elite VSX-52 under the hood from what I can tell. With 2012 models out I guess they will not be producing much of 1121k and so not much inventory left around. Also what Pio has offered for 2012 makes the 1121k even a better bargain.
Maybe you will see some sale come Memorial day.
I've been watching the local best buys for open box returns and have yet to see any. I have found a couple of 1021's from $199 to about $349 - kind of hard to pass up (@ $199) if its really in stock and isn't damaged or anything.

Shows up as VSX-1121. Must be your router or bridge device you are seeing.

Yes, figured that much. Got an Asus RT-N66U will see what could be wrong.

Thanks.

Basic help please...Trying to set up the 1121 with a Samsung TV. I get sound and picture to TV when the HDMI is ran directly from set-top to TV. However, when I run the HDMI to the AVR HDMI input slot #2 and HDMI out to TV HDMI slot #2 (ARC slot) the TV screen says "weak or no signal check cables" and the screen is snow without noise. Well the cables and connections are okay. I set the AVR and TV to HDMI #2. I am missing something in the set up but cannot figure it out. Any suggestions. Thanks from a beginner.

Make sure you are selecting the right channel in the AVR to show AVR menu on TV.
Also could be that HDMI cable is damaged.

For ARC to work you need to enable it in the menu of the AVR.

Btw, I am using a Dlink router as a bridge for my 1121 and it is passing through the 1121 without an issue to my main router.
Thank you iafzal. I'll let you know if it works.
iafzal it didn't work. The HDMI cable is good because I have the AVR menu on the TV screen. Control with HDMI is on, ARC is enabled, I made certain both the TV and AVR are set to HDMI #2. I put both units in stand-by then turned on the AVR and then the TV. Still couldn't get audio or visual. Appreciate your suggestions. I will call Pioneer in the morning and hope it is a minor overlook on my part. Cheers.

You have to set the receiver friendly name (default is VSX-1121) . Refer to network setup - page 68 of the manual.

Nah, the default is good enough for me, it worked out just fine up until something changed in the Asus RT-N66U fw...

I have written a few times about occasional HDMI video dropouts, sometimes with a white flash, while the audio continues. I can definitely say it was a handshake issue between the receiver and my 4 year old Sony Bravia. Just got a 2012 Samsung E7000 plasma and the video is solid. (the picture is awesome too except for a highly reflective screen)

How do I setup the StandBy Pass Through feature on the 1121. I've tried searching the forum but still confused. I will be connecting a nonslim PS3, Direct TV cable box, and a Wii.

THANKS!

THANKS!

Pass through only works with devices that support HDMI CEC.
Fat PS3: does not
Cable Box: Most do not
Wii: I am not sure.

You can download the manual and then search for this in the
HDMI section. In the setup screen you need to select the Standby pass though as Normal and HDMI control as ON.

^^^

i think it's pretty safe to say the wii isn't hdmi cec enabled...

Our receiver brand spanking new is worth $800 and it can't support most pass through connections?! My father-in-law has a Yamaha RZ-Z6(something like that) that he bought for 2k. We have the same direct tv box, but his can pass through. He would be bumping his old school chinese music on a chinese dvd player(the players that will play all type of files) while watching cable tv. So what is wrong with our receivers? Something as easy as HDMI pass through not being able to work because of CEC is BS.

Yes you are right. It has been said multiple times on these threads that implementation by Pioneer is too strict and requires every component in the setup(source-AVR-TV) is fully compliant. In almost all cases CEC implementation does not exist on cable/sat boxes so with Pio it will not work

I had PS3 fat and it is not CEC so it did not work and many months ago I spent many hours and settings to get it to work. Just got PS3 slim which is CEC and I simply plugged in and it works like a charm on from the get go in couple of minutes.

So if all the devices are CEC it works beautifully.

Finally hooked up my side surround for my 5.1 setup and ran MCACC. Used airplay and everything sounded good with Extended Stereo. I just got done watching SD dvd Underworld Awakening and noticed PLll Movie and PLll Movie+THX, the surrounds are super quiet. I kept getting up to put my ears next to the surrounds and kept wondering, what can be the problem. Anyone here have a suggestion as to why my surrounds are so low/quiet when using MOVIE to play HT?

Esually it is only 1 of the 4-5 HDMI ports on a HDTV and is labeled as such.

I am not able to get my arc to worl. I just purcased a Sharp 80le632U and I have the hdmi going from the out port on the receiiver into HDMI on the 1st input (labled arc) on the Sharp. I changed the settings in the receiver as per hte manual and matches what you have. I have everything going through the receiver and then just the one hdmi out to the tv. But I dont get any audio. ie It will be the audio from the directv (which I think is in hdmi 1 on the revceiver) and the video from the tv. I was hoping to be able to get this working otherwise I guess I will have to run an optical cable.
Any help would be appreciated

So you Direct TV hooked to AVR? what HDMi port?
AVR hooked to port 1 on TV, right.
I am confused what is your setup?

There may be a setting on the TV to enable audio out through ARC. Check for that bcause it should work as it dows on mine without a hitch.

Did you get anywhere with this? I have a very hollow sound, and the highs are way too overbearing. I followed the first post steps very closely, and used a good tripod at ear level. I tweaked my sub down but I'm not quite at 0db, I think I'm more like -5, so I could keep iterating that. But really it's my center channel that sounds off. Anyone have suggestions? I have Klipsch rf-52II and rc-52, everything set to small. I checked the timing and actually lowered it to 20-40 because it looked better there than 30-50. 30-50ms didn't sound much different though so I don't think that's it.

I think my ears should be happy with a flat response, but I really feel like it should A) sound warmer than it does, and B) not have such glaring highs on the center chan.

Thanks.
