I have a 5 year old panasonic 42". I never did anything to "break it in" other than just watch whatever programming i wanted. I use it all the time now for Pandora, which just sits on the screen dormant and would be considered an burn in risk. I've never had any burn in.

My personal experience is to just avoid watching CNBC or anything with a ticker that could cause burn in.

BTW, you're in front of your TV 6-8 hours a day???? WTF???

I dont think that is a lot of time. People get home from work and dont go to bed till late. Especially gamers will sometimes be up till 1 or 2am.

As far as the op. Break in is unnecessary. Watch the tv for 100 hours or so and the phosphers will age just fine. Diehards will run slides and tell you it is the "only way" but from my short time here, i have learned from reliable sources its not.

I do a lot of gaming and the only game to give me issues with IR has been gears of war. It's weapon hud icon is a deep black and environments are pretty bright so gives some IR that lingers. If they had some hud opacity options I doubt I'd have issues. I don't really watch much tv but from the movies I've watched in letterbox I haven't had any issues whatsoever with IR. IR is pretty much overhyped but you could have issue with tv logos like history and espn. Movies and games though, no real issues.

IR by definition is temporary no matter how much it lingers. I haven't heard of anyone so far with a plasma from the last few years that had actual burn-in. IR can linger for weeks to months but if the IR fades at all it's not burn-in. The IR I get from Gears goes away but I play gears so much that it's possible that it might turn into burn-in overtime. I'm running the scrolling bars more often now so that might not happen. I'm going to enjoy gaming though regardless and just learn from what happens without too much emotional distress.

Last Question another thing you could do is turn overscan on and off between long sessions that way the whole hud moves a descent amount.

Overscan? You mean the pixel orbiter? Or the screen size? Orbiter is on 1min and screen is 'full' or '100%' rather than the 95%. Or do you just mean use zoom so the hud itself moves on the screen?

my gt25 does. I imagine all plasmas have similar screen protection options.

I meant the screen size. Turning it to 95 percent after an hour is a pretty good way to avoid burn in. What devs need to do is what Call of Duty Black Ops did and make Huds moveable.

I've found just plain hud opacity is enough to prevent IR. Halo reach has it by default. Medal of Honor lets you customize it. So does crackdown. All a game needs it hud opacity. It doesn't help though if the hud is like gears, deep black against bright background with no opacity. You'd think the industry leader in game engine licensing would have such a simple thing defaulted in their games especially given the high profile nature if their titles. It's a crying shame a game like MoH has options Gears doesn't. MoH blows btw!

Yea your right. I was just playing Fallout New Vegas with an Orange hud and 50 percent transparency and no IR what so ever after 2 hours of play.
