"A Glee fan's delight"

Film Synopsis:

The perfect party companion, enjoy the most talked about musical performances when GLEE Encore arrives onto Blu-ray and DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The hit musical television series now has more Billboard Magazine Hot 100 chart entries than any other artist, topping Elvis Presley and James Brown. This full-length DVD features a set list of Season One's most sensational musical numbers - back to back so the party never has to end! Experience all your favorite hit songs by Lady Gaga, Madonna, Journey, and much more.

My Take:

attachment.php?attachmentid=209776&d=1303490711

When I reviewed Glee - Season One on Blu-ray I found myself caught up in the show's continuing plot that revolves around a cadre of characters at McKinley High School's Glee Club. It was refreshing, wonderfully written and the infusion of musical themes/choreography ranging from show tunes to chart hits (from varying eras and genres) gave it a modern flavor that integrated well with the episodic storyline. We liked it so much we decided to watch season two. Unfortunately we lost interest after four or five episodes however the show remains as popular as ever and has a dedicated fan base that not only keeps the ratings high but buys enough of the show's music to break the record for having the most songs on Billboard's Top 100. This collection of 36 musical set pieces from Season One includes many of the most popular performances grouped by theme/artist. There is no storyline/lead in as each segment jumps in where the music starts and finishes where it ends. The menu includes a shuffle option as well as a track selection option. For those who already own Season One on Blu-ray, which has a Glee Music Jukebox option containing all of the season's music, this disc would seem redundant however diehard fans may be inclined just the same. At a minimum it presents a great way to enjoy many of Season One's performance highlights by simply popping it into your Blu-ray player and letting it play much like you would a music CD.

Glee encore comes to Blu-ray Disc from 20th Century Fox featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 20 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 4.4 Mbps.

In looking at these snippets taken from Season One they appear to mirror the audio/video quality of the original Blu-ray release which I reviewed back in September. Here is a summary of my comments from that review:

This show has a distinctive visual style that utilizes a variety of bright color schemes which helps to augment its ostentatious thematic tone. The results are impressive as deep, oversaturated reds, and vibrant blues are capably offset by a lavish assortment of pastels that can be striking and a perfect match for the show's varied showcases. Fleshtones are on the warm side but are tonally balanced and lifelike in depiction. Contrast is stable and blacks are strong which enriches both bright and dark onscreen elements. Resolution is strong as images have excellent depth and appreciable delineation with clarity that accents the fine detail in facial features and objects. Sharpness wavers here and there and darker elements tend to lack the dimensionality of brighter ones but neither is a detrimental to fidelity. A light sprinkling of grain provides an inviting textural nuance which is reminiscent of film. Other than some minor noise visible in a few dark backgrounds I didn't see any obvious signs of video related anomalies.

The show relies heavily on dialogue however its frequent musical accompaniment and array of sounds benefited from lossless audio's high fidelity and sounds terrific. The front three channels have an open and detailed delivery with appreciable separation and discernible directional correlation that enhances depth. Surround activity is limited to splashes of ambience that effectively extends the soundstage. The variety music has good top end air, discerning detail, and smooth highs that are non sibilant and make for a toe tapping and pleasing listening experience. The occasional use of low frequency effects and extended dynamics offer robust bass and enhanced energy that accent the sound mix.

Bonus Features:

There are no bonus features include with this release.

Final Thoughts:

Glee Encore offers fans of the popular series the opportunity to own a 36 track musical companion to their Season One set which provides direct access to some of the show's best performances. There is nothing contained herein that isn't already available on the original release so a purchase would seem redundant for everyone but the truest Gleek. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from 20th Century Fox featuring high definition audio/video quality that enhances the Glee experience.

As an old fart of 63 who loves Glee, I have been saying for quite awhile, "Why dont they make a dvd of just the musical performances?". This is it, and I cant wait to buy it!!!!!

Thanks for the review as always Ralph. One thing that would be nice when you review a music dvd would be to have a track listing for us, but I went to Amazon and saw it there, but it would be a nice part of your review.

Yes, another good review Mr. Potts.

I don't know why I like this teeny bopper show..... maybe it's because I only get over-the-air TV in a limited market, and when I got an HDTV last year this was something to watch that let me see just how good my new TV really was with a high quality 1080i signal.

I found the production values to be amazingly high. It looks great, and sounds great, and it's funny. And they actually use tripods and steadycams for many of their shots rather than having the picture bounce around like so many other shows these days.. talk about refreshing.

In any case, I might actually consider this after it's had a chance to come down in price a bit.

I have to say, this show is one I have my DVR set to. It is funny, decently acted, not overly preachy, and has some good music. The fact that you have young (Legal) girls dressed as cheerleaders doesn’t really hurt either LoL

Definitely a great deal; I too picked one up - my 7-year-old is too young for the mature content of the show, but she loves the songs...
