At first I thought it was to do with the brightness/color uniformity issues as the corner(quadrant) with the least amount of brightness is where I can never attain focusing clarity.
First, let me say I have seen 7 Mitsubishi's 3800/4000's I think (I lost count), but about that. I had (2) hc3800's, and (2) hc4000's in my home, I also calibrated one for someone and came across a couple others.
One reason the focus uniformity appears to be an issue is because the projector is just so sharp in the center that Mits wasn't able to achieve perfect focus uniformity at these price levels. If you want better uniformity and a brighter image, get the Benq w1200, but the w1200 has major gaming lag so that is the downside (and for some peoples setups it is too bright). The sharpness difference between the two in real world viewing is very minimal, but if you are that picky, you might like the Benq better.
A lot of projectors do have better focus uniformity, but they are not as sharp in the middle, and it might not look like it, but its actually better to have a projector that is razor sharp with a slight uniformity error than to have one that has perfect uniformity and isn't as sharp.
There is a tad variance between units when it comes to focus uniformity, but not a huge amount. You may have one of the units that has a tiny bit more than normal, I'd try an exchange anyhow because these are not like LCD's where you are shaking in your boots to hoping the next one is good, almost all the RMA'd Mits I had were good and generally better than the original (oddly enough).
There is a larger variance between units when it comes to brightness uniformity, so if you have a brightness uniformity issue you may do even better with a swap. The brightness uniformity becomes much less apparent as the lamp ages.
I had no problems returning both the hc3800 and hc4000 even after I did an RMA, but I went with a specific vendor and the one time I went beyond 30 days, well we had clout with the vendor for other reasons so they took it back anyways with no questions asked (corporate account).
