Mosquito NR: Off.

I am in New Zealand so I appreciated the models can be slightly different, but am I missing some secret sequence to get into the different modes. I can only see THX, Normal, dynamic, profess 1 and profess 2. I can't find CATS, Video NR, 24p smooth motion,or tint.

Custom is the same as 'Normal'.
Warm 2 is the same as 'Warm'.
CATS is 'Eco mode'.
There is no LOW/MID/HIGH panel brightness.

You can't see Tint because you are on the internal tuner/SDHC card. Try an HDMI input and you will see it.

When I watched the same scene on my 32" LCD, the banding was much less. I guess this is one of the pitfalls of plasma, eh? This is the first time I have seen something this egregious on the TV. This is in 60 Hz. Changing to 96 Hz/3:2 pulldown off/on (i.e. 24p on/off on BD player), etc. did not make any difference.

The attached pic is poor quality, and the banding looks a bit different on the pic, but you get the idea.

My Samsung PN58C8000 does that as well.. I don't think plasmas handle flames or dark under water scenes so good.. Like when a submarine is in motion.. Unless maybe the source is super clean HD.. Every plasma I have looked at has this.. It takes a certain type of scene to really display it. I have also seen this on some LCD/LED sets as well.

Am I missing something here how/where do I check to find these settings. I do have advanced (isfccc) Set to 'on'. I have read through many forum pages but can't seem to find the answers.

I am currently running DNICES Screen prep slides through, but on the 'Normal' picture setting and using his settings on what adjustments I have been able to find as the slides run through.

Many thanks

D-nice's settings are for north american tv's only so these may not work for other tv's, but they may get you close. According to your manual you have access to cool, normal and warm color temps only. Also you have Dynamic, normal, cinema, thx, game, photo, pro1, pro2... so lots of choices but you may have to turn on something else to access them(see pages 37-44):

http://www.panasonic.co.nz/userfiles...structions.pdf

Your tv has a cats sensor but may not be able to adjust it or it has another name in the menu.

This is a north american site so you may not get much help here, I'll suggest going to avforums or hdj(there may be other sites) to see if someone can help.

I know D-Nice has posted calibration settings for the VT30 also. Although not as good as a custom job, if it gets you 70% there, maybe good enough? Any thoughts?

I got a multi-set discount, as I had arranged for him to do a couple tvs. So I paid $325. I also believed that if you are going to spend $3k+ for a display, you might as well try and maximize the picture quality.

As for using others settings, it might do the job and it might not, from what I've learned. And the only way you'll really know if calibration makes a difference vs others settings is to have it calibrated and compare. But after having had Chad calibrate my set, seeing what's involved to get it right, and the resulting picture, I highly recommend having him calibrate it.

I was wondering which model 3D glasses arrived with your 65VT30?

My May 2011 (MJ1144...) had TY-EW3D2MU. Has anyone gotten the TY-EW3D3xx?

Guess so. This movie is known to have instances on banding in this scene, but I think the plasma exacerbates it. Thanks!

Check out Crimsin Tide with Denzel Washington... You can see the banding as the submarine moves under water.. They use to play the movie trailer at best buy. It was on a Demo disc.

I just got a 55VT30 made in Sept. 2011 and I didn't receive the 3rd gen glasses. I believe they are the 2nd gen glasses. surprised Panasonic didn't include the new glasses with such a recent build date. I should be thankful I received any glasses since incentives seem to be disappearing quickly.

Folks for those interested, I posted info on the Color update on HDJ in the usual owners/calibration thread.

Could you post that link? I searched this thread and couldn't find the specific link nor links for D-Nice's settings. Thanks!

BTW, the only link I found was ST30 DIY calibration.

Links to that forum can not be posted here. Use Google search to find the other forum.

Thanks for the quick response. I plugged an HDMI media player in and that gave me the missing settings for the picture mode, so I set those as per D-Nices prep settings. I then plugged the USB stick back in with the slide show and made sure those settings were still the same I presume the HDMI setting would have taken even though I changed from HDMI input to sd/usb input?

No. The settings are independent per input. If they aren't there, then they are probably at default or off.

You can't follow D-Nice's instructions to the letter because you don't have a North American unit. That is why he puts a disclaimer.

Thanks, found it. Sorry, didn't occur to me that HDJ was referring to another site.

Can anyone post the VT30 settings they use when watching hockey? I noticed last night when I was in the standard settings, that when the camera angle was in the normal side-to-side rink view the picture would increase in brightness as the play/game progressed till a new camera angle was switched to. When the camera cut to a new camera angle(such as corner shot, behind net) the picture would revert to the standard/less brightness setting. Is there anyway to stop this increasing brightness?

TC-P55VT30
Sept-2011 build
xx1248xxxx
PDP EPP: 64.47

I believe this has the fix for the fluctuating brightness already applied?
For me standard mode has what you described: the more white on the screen the brighter the picture gets. It's very pronounced and makes standard mode unusable.

THX, custom and cinema don't have that weird behaviour. THX looks the best anyways (unless you've had calibration ion another mode I guess) I use it most of the time for everything, sometimes custom for gaming.

You'll note that D-Nice has posted different settings for different revisions of the VT30. North America only has 55 and 65" also so don't know how a 42" and 50" will behave. Its really impossible to say what the end result will be.

I just got mine (65VT30). I have a June built from Crutchfield. It came with 3D glasses model:TY-EW3D2MA. I'm going through slides right now...Can wait to check for FBR, etc (hopefully I got lucky)...I'll add some pictures later

Ok thanks, pity the only certified Isf calibrator I have located is in Christchurch.

I purchased the VT30 which replaces my older Panny (PZ800U). On the PZ800 I used component cables to watch satellite HD which provided excellent resolution. Because the VT30 only accepts component with a cheap adaptor plug this results in poor resolution and mostly noticeable in a lack of detail in faces. I'm also noticing patchy digital artifacts and banding. HDMI, amazingly enough, results in the same subpar PQ. And here's the kicker: Bluray and 3D bluray look stellar but also with occasional banding. I use THX mode and have optimized the settings using Spears and Munsil. Other steps I've taken to resolve the problem are:

1. tried various inputs and grades of HDMI cable (no change)
1. replaced PVR/sat receiver with a newer model (no change)
1. thought I had a bad copy so had a replacement VT30 delivered (no change)
2. had the A-board replaced (for another problem...fluctuating blacks) and hoped maybe this would resolve the issue (no change)
5. tried an OTA antenna (slightly better but no significant change)

I've only heard of 2 other plasma owners make a similiar complaint (one was a VT30 here on this forum and another SamsungD8000).

Now, is this perhaps a breakin issue? I still don't have a 100 hours on the set. Can't see how a couple hundred hours will miraculously improve resolution. Is it perhaps a poor source upconversion from 1080i/720p to 1080p?

What gives?
What size TV did you come from? Many people when.going to a new.bigger TV are surprised at how much a new TV can show the faults of source material.

What size VT30 do you have, I have the 65" and don't have any issues with BluRay but I do think the content and channels varies significant with PQ with my comcast box (motorola 3400, latest one).

I have my HDMI going through my Denon 4308 with pass-through, no video processing. Certain channels looks better than others. I currently prefer THX, warm 1, sharp 0, contrast 65, bright 45, and have been very satisfied with the image.

I am coming from all panasonic plasma.. from a 2008 50", 2008 42", S1, S2 (both 65"), and s1 58".. so I have many to compare to... the VT30 is clearly the best of all of them in terms of depth of color, black levels, processing.

I do not notice banding on mine. I never watch anything but HD, so cannot comment on SD video broadcasts. 720p broadcasts are noticeably less PQ than 1080i.

1080p on the sony bdp 370 are stellar ... avatar, dark knight, and tron were my initial "reference" discs.

I contacted the BBB online, and not 3 weeks after filing my claim, I had a new P65S2 sitting in my living room.

I highly suggest you consider the BBB. Panasonic was USELESS, their customer service deplorable, I would just laugh out loud at times while talking to these people on the phone -- and I'm a pretty reasonable person.

Thanks. I may try that soon if they don't get back to me with a satisfactory answer soon. In my most recent go-around, they told me that management is re-opening the case.

Regarding the Shootout.

I have been noticing the VT30 constantly shimmering.
S&V the shimmering in case you misses it was due to the camera.feed not the TV.

The Color FW helped but it still wasn't par with Samsung colors. The TV shown had both the FBr and the Color.fix applied.

The Elite had the best blacks, but had a Teal issue which should be fixed with a promised FW. The VT30 was next and then the Samsung D8000.

Here are the pictures as I promised. And let me tell you I am impressed (current owner of a Samsung PN59D8000 calibrated by Chad B). The color and quality of picture out the box is impressive. I can only imagine after calibration (planning to have Chad B again). I'm so impressed I already forgot about the web browser, better looking remote, smart hub on the Samsung. I checked the software version and have 84.44 but so far I have not seen any FBR, can anyone suggest movies I should try to see if there is any?
So far I tried Dark Knight, Avatar, Ocean's Eleven and no FBR...Anyway if you are on the fence (D8000 vs VT30) look no further this is it.

Hi, new to forum, have questions on setup of 55-VT30, sorry thread is too long to sift through....

For first 100 hours is normal programming all right as long as the screen is covered and I don't have any static bars/lines, etc., or is it really consensus to do slides?

How do I determine the production month from the serial number?

Thank You.

I got the same set last Wed. and am just finishing the break in period with slides. I think most are using slides. The build date should be written on the label where you found the serial number. My set is a September 2011 build date.
