Unfortunately, even the best plasma's black bars can be barely seen in a pitch black room if you are looking for them.

An Ideal-lume light really works very nicely to well to highten perceived contrast as well as reduces eye strain. It will help you achieve the black bars melting into bezel effect you are looking for. It is well worth the modest investment IMHO, and I couldn't do without it in my home theater.

Ultimately, if you want the blackest blacks with optimal contrast, I would respectfully suggest a pro calibration after a few hundred hours or so.

Good luck!

Could you please recommend a light to purchase and perhaps instructions (or point to an existing thread). I am finding my black levels very average. Especially compared to the Elite 50 inch this panny is replacing. I have 118 hours of run time.

thanks

I just tried the color luminance fix. IMO color saturation looks much better in all modes with default settings. Applying the fix reverts the software version to 2.1. If you update back to 2.2 fix is gone. Now if Panasonic could fix color decoding. God I'm going to miss the blacks from this TV since I'm exchanging for a 64D8000 due to color decoding. I'm keeping the luminance fix until it becomes available with a higher update than 2.2
post #3184 of 6382
Does anyone remember if the color luminance got worst when they went from 2.1 to 2.2 the first time around ????

Wonder if 2.2 made it worst and they're just reverting sets to an earlier condition.

Not being any kind of software guru, forgive if the following question seems a tad "non-geekey"

If one elects to forgo the latest luminance fix...will any future updates require installation of said fix??And from reading you comments on the fix....it seems you are sacrificing blacks for the fixed color issues..correct??Is this the choice we are faced with making???
This really puts me in a quandary...I want to have my set calibrated but do not want to lose any calibration due to future updates(if any at all)Will reverting to 2.1 and then going back to 2.2 after seeing the effects of both...wipe out calibrated setting??
Thanks..

Does the luminance fix reduce black levels?
It does not reduce any black levels at all (or as far as I can tell). I'm set on exchanging my 65VT30 for a 64D8000 due to color decoding. I was just expressing how much I will miss the blacks from this TV.

I exchanged my 64D8000 for the 65VT30. The fbr on the Sammy is unbearable. You should seriously think about what you are about to do because Samsung will not acknowledge the issue and it's horrible!

I currently have a 59D8000 and love the colors. I haven't notice any fbr to be honest. The way I see it I'm jumping ship getting a cheaper set and saving money for a 2012 Panny. Hopefully 2012 models will not have the current issues and same if not better blacks.

You have both sets? How are you this concerned about color decoding and not notice the Sammy fbr??

There are many that have not seen fbr, just like I did not have any screen peeling being a march build. That's the reason why color decoding is an issue. I see perfect colors everyday in the Samy which I had calibrated by Chad B. The blacks really impressed me on the VT but the lack of accurate colors is becoming unbearable to my eyes. Anyway have you try the luminance fix yet?

No. I'm still naturally breaking it in. I'll most likely apply it when I get it calibrated. Watch Inception in a dark room.. You'll see the fbr!

Just took hold of my 55vt30, went thru the slides for a couple of cycles and decided I'm gonna watch some basketball tonite. Going thru the slides a couple of cycles, no green blobs, no brightness pops(well, I need to watch more content), screen is pretty much uniform and all that being said it's a keeper! I'm a happy camper right now, Chee Hoo! The possibility of getting a green blob panel had me worried for a bit there.

for sure the screen panel looks nicer than my 50g10, with the sets in power off mode the vt30 panel looks darker. Need to watch more content for sure to really see how it goes, but so far so good.

Mine is MJ1145 and was not updated so...

This is identifiable on the side of the box. Hope this helps.

Set up my 65 VT. firmware 2.06, July build with eeprom fix. Just updated to firmware 2.2 over the internet. What did 2.2 give me?
Serial MJ11690XXXX

I must have missed the posts about the color decoding issue and the luminosity issue that I am seeing in the last 2 pages.

Would I have been better off leaving the firmware at 2.06? More importantly do the more technical folks on here see fixes coming for the color decoding or color luminosity issue (assuming I am using the right terminology from the posts)?
When updating over the net the VT65 found 2.2 to update my 2.06.

When checking this link on the Panasonic site

2.07 firmware

There is a 2.07 firm listed with improved media player functionality listed for the VT65?

No, 2.2 is what you should have. The TV has a color deciding and a color luminance issue. The deciding issue most likely won't ever be fixed. The luminance issue has a beta firmware update available for a professional calibrator to use to adjust your set.

ZZtop

You are fine with 2.2 version. Right now the luminance fix like spinn said is just a beta

I heard that this tv sucks compared to the Samsung D series. Is this true?

The colors on the VT30 will be great if you get that display calibrated as well.

You heard wrong. Both displays have issues (just read the posts above). According to CNET, and according to the VE shoot-out, PQ is slightly better on the VT30 than the top Samsung D8000 plasma. And Panny fixed the brightness fluctuation issue, which Samsung refuses to acknowledge.

Does anyone know if the optical out on this TV will pass 5.1? My last Samsung would only output stereo.

I will second that. Picture looks fantastic in ISF night.

Hard to see any problems at all. Not looking for any either.

No unless it is OTA.
For those that have "found" the professional installer update, realize you install it at your own risk and a future update is possible. There is no going back. What is updated is the LSI data. Feel free to update to the latest 2.2 version or any software network update after it will not touch the LSI data.

Well I just got done with my panasonic vt30 55 calibration... and I still hate the tv.. the pq sucks. I've been over to my sister and uncles home who both have samsung, and I don't know if its LED or LCD, but the PQ is much better. I'm done with Panasonic in future. I even had the a-board replaced.. there is just something wrong with it. I give up..

In what way does it suck?

I also think the Samsung picture from the D8000 is stunning, but I just can't cope with the buzzing issues they have. I have tried 2 plasmas from them, and they both had an excessive buzzing issue. Just seems like the build quality from Samsung is inferior. Maybe not so strange when it apparently only takes 2 minutes to assemble a samsung LED tv (and a plasma most likely not much longer) on their assembly line...

I think you really have to get the set professionally calibrated by one of the top traveling calibrators to get the color to look "right." When I briefly had my 65VT30, I just couldn't get the color looking the way I thought it should, but planned on getting it ISF'd. However, I had to return the set because of uniformity issues, but have considered ordering it again.

I would look at their plasma over the LCD, your eyes may also prefer the look of whatever picture mode they are running in..

I really wanted the Sharp 80" but compared to the Panny VT I thought the PQ from the panny was superior. I have the VT home now and like the picture but the 65" is a bit small on my wall. Also, now I have found that glare is a major issue on this 65" VT. Even with the curtains half down the glare is bad and there is even significant glare from the kitchen lights onto the VT.

Is glare a common issue with these TV's? Am I better off getting the 80" Sharp?

Reflections are bad with Plasma sets. I only view my Kuro at nite with no lights , so i never have them kind of Probs.
