Official Panasonic 2011 TC-PxxVT30 Series Thread Discussion Thread [No Price Talk] - Page 156

rogo-

Yes I've been following that thread over there too. There is a possibility that with the all new panel design and filter the 2012 sets will be brighter but where and by exactly how much that brightness will be increased is still a mystery. The upper end is where it's needed. Newer technology generally enables engineers to do more with less. I've decided to wait it out and see for myself.

1) Judder/motion. Is it noticeable? Is it just source dependent? I don't want any at all, but where is it most likely to happen ( gaming, cable, dvd, bd )? I'm confused how a set like this earns stellar marks from reviewers and can exhibit any judder at all.
2) Dithering. I went to BB to compare the D7/8000 versus this set and I noticed a fair amount of dithering on the VT30. Is that just a matter of lowering the brightness?
3) Brightness. Are plasmas in general dimmer than LCD? Is this set a little dimmer than competing plasmas?

Thank you,

1) It is source dependent. Movies (24fps) will exhibit it more than programing recorded at 30 or 60 fps. Motion blur is frequently added into games for stylistic reasons.

2) Dithering typically is less to non-existent with more balanced and accurate picture settings. If you enjoy retinal scorching settings then dithering will be visible. Contrast and brightness will affect this.

3) Not anymore, besides having too bright or vivid an image is fatiguing and detrimental to picture quality.

LCDs have come a long way but at least for me a quality plasma trumps anything LCD based displays can provide today if ever. OLED is really the only tech that has the potential dethroning my "Precious".

The VT will be a revelation, especially if calibrated, once you watch some quality Blu-Ray releases.

Best Regards

I agree. I'm watching the Megamind bluray on my 65vt30 now and the picture quality is top notch!

I'm waiting and seeing, too. I was all set to buy an Elite...

I'm just of the opinion that the new Panasonic will probably be a 10% improvement over this year's, not much more. And I hope I'm wrong.
My crystal ball shows Sharp coming out with a Elite based panel that's price competitive to the Panasonic V30s which will cause Panasonic to up their game just to stay relevant. Then the question will become do you really need 45 foot lamberts whites or local dimming at the pixel level. Since brighter whites is what's killing LCD to plasma in store comparison, if there is a technical way that Panasonic can up the whites, they will.

Despite the upcoming 2012 model, got my 65VT30, couldn't be happier, especially after running the slides and punching in the burn-in settings, this is the most AMAZING TV I've ever experienced. Thanks all for the contributors to this forum.

But testing the DLNA function today, just realized that it doesn't decode .wmv files!! All .wmv files result in "cannot read file" error using the Mezzmo DLNA server. The only way to view these .wmv files is to activate "transcoding" on Mezzmo which results in high CPU usage and over-heating in 1080p.

On the other hand, my 2012 Samsung UN55D8000 could decode and play all these files just fine.

Is this an issue with the Mezzmo server? Has anyone successfully decode and play HD .wmv files on the Panasonics?

It comes with a free 15 day trial. I also thought about a Boxee Box for a 2 year old panny. I haven't tried any other workaround yet.

I like Mezzmo too, but it can't seem to deliver those files without transcoding activated, otherwise the TV will get a "cannot read file" error. This is disappointing because I really like Mezzmo's itunes-style features but transcoding just reduces the quality of the source file, not to mention high CPU usage on my Quad-core machine which would be problematic after a 2-hour movie!

I experienced transcoding from mezz to the VT30 with Q6600 cpu at no more than 7-9% cpu use and with 720 or 1080 content, also I see no hit in quality whatsoever related to streaming on a hard disk connected to an usb port on the tv set

Also was able to embed subtitles with mkvmerge, but mind it has to be up to version 4.0.0, higher mkvtoolnix versions (whatever the options you use) to be compliant with header compression and whatever else are no more file mergeable / readable by the VT30

My fight now is to 3dsubtitle -> mkvmerge a half sbs 3D mkv file. So far not a chance even in hard disk usb streaming to play a 3D subtitled mkv file (3D mkv with no 3D subtitle is ok though)

First time posting, noob, etc Just got my 65VT30 delivered yesterday (excellent white-glove service - thanks Amazon/Ceva!) and so far, very impressed! Vacation ends today so 100 hour prep starting tonight. Replacing 5 year old 42PX60U, which still runs like a champ and putting in bedroom (getting rid of POS LG LCD)

One question: I did notice that Blu-ray picture seemed a little darker that I would like (BDT210)- will reference settings fix this or is there something else I should be doing?

I don't have any wmv files to try but since mezzmo won't play avi files I just use win7's media player. DLNA is built into win7 and it shows up on my list of servers in the tv's menu along with mezzmo.

windows 7 media player is slightly upgraded from windows vista (the one I still use) but in practical easy terms you can use mezz for some files and dlna windows media player for others as they appear on the very same screen list in the tv set

but I bet you did not try 3D subs on a ripped mkv 3d half sbs file ?

Not yet Do the subs pop out of the screen?

Has anyone taken delivery of a 65VT30 from Crutchfield in the past few weeks? If so, can you advise the manufacturing date on your set? (re the latest firmware upgrades/fixes).

One of their advisors offered me a great package price on the set when purchased as part of a total A/V upgrade I've been planning for some time. Actually beats Amazon.

But the advisor told me Crutch has a large inventory of the 65VT30's right now and, although they did get a Nov. shipment, he couldn't guarantee I'd get the latest manufacturing date. He admitted Crutch doesn't move these sets as quickly as Amazon (who could!) so it's possible to get an older manufacture.

Of course the set's returnable if I don't like it, but I don't need the hassle.

And then there's that pesky Panny press conference on Jan. 9, to announce the wonderful, marvelous 2012 model improvements.

Thanks for any info.

Congratulations on the new set!

Are you saying the picture is only darker when viewed from the DVD player?

@ninogui, good to hear your success. What device profile did you choose for your Mezzmo? For me, "Panasonic Viera (no divx)" is the only one so far that can decode .wmv and .mkv files. Maybe my high CPU usage comes from wrong profile?

The first set I got was a June build but eventually developed a line from top to bottom so I had to exchange. The replacement set is a May build ( got it 11/9). I just had Panasonic switch the A-board.

Take the deal and have Panasonic replace the board. Takes longer to unscrew the back than replacing the board. Remember to keep an eye on the price for the next 90 days in case the price drops (I had them reimburse me 3 times). If the 2012 VT happens to be better you also have 90 days to return.
Got a quick question, I haven't read through the entire thread.

Does the VT series handle a computer's HDMI signal without any overscan? Do you reliably get 1:1 pixel mapping from a computer's 1920x1080p signal?
Can I still do the break in slides after about a week of watching Netflix? I want to do the slides, but there are no LJ reference settings available yet. Any word o when they will be available?

Also, I've noticed that my set auto dims and brightens when watching basketball games and ESPN. Other channels dont have this. Is this a feature that can be turned off? I have CATS off.

Thanks in advance!

OK guys ... just received my 55vt30 from Cleveland Plasma and when I turn it on it goes directly into what I would imagine is the Service Menu. I don't seem to be able to get out of it ... all keys on the remote are ignored and turning the TV off and back on just gets me back into the Service Menu.

Any Ideas??
nick-

If you are in the service menu you might try unplugging the TV from the wall to turn it off. Then plug it back in and turn it on.
Had it unplugged for 3 hours and it still opens right up into the service menu.
Weird. What happens if you navigate through the menu and then exit? My set was replaced due to not powering up after exiting the service menu, though 15 minutes unplugged would bring it back to life.

What I'm saying is:
Turn on the TV.
While it's on and in the service menu unplug it from the wall.
Wait a minute, plug it back in and turn it on.

I've read that sometimes this is the way you are supposed to exit the service menu. I don't know if it will fix your problem but it's worth a try. Otherwise contact Cleveland Plasma and see if they can help.

BTW, the first time you turn on the TV it will go to a user setup menu, but you should be able to navigate that with the remote.

hi

it´s the tryout of latest version I think 2.4.5, profile is panasnic viera (hate these amazon redirects lol) 2011 didnt really bother to try the other ones
If you opt for the NAS route which is much better being dedicated for streaming then serviio and a few others are the way to go as mezz is mainly win app and NAS run on linux

bear in mind mezz server runs as a service too so depending on your particular opsys and pc config a hit can be taken on the overall performance, there´s just too many details to look into on that
wmv well I dont care a lot on wmv and proprietary formats, mkv is a container for most of them anyway and brings high res sound, image and 3D native wise so it will be the way to go
take a look into

http://matroska.org

you will also notice in the future a much greater all manufacturers support on MKV so the ones who get in front with compatibility will surely get a bigger slice of the (future) market (as the target consumer avg age gets younger)

I take this as a fact

this is weird. usually just the on/off button works. I wonder if someone messed up and you are stuck on some firmware update broken procedure, or a no boot condition / board malfunction leading you all the time to the service menu?

can you post a photo of what show on your ON screen ?

with the set ON press the vol(-) button on the right side of the screen and while pressing it point the remote to the screen with your other arm and press 0 three times
look at the screen and notice if something changed
turn OFF, then ON again

if the set doesnt boot then you have a problem.

I've had my 55VT30 since early October (August build/MJ series/FB fix in place) and I haven't had any 'auto dimming' on any content or source. I turned 'C.A.T.S.' off the first time I set the TV up and haven't had any FB or auto dimming occur. Watched football (although not basketball) on ESPN and didn't have any on that channel either. Since you've only seen this occur on ESPN and only during basketball games but on no other channels I'd have to guess it's something in the incoming signal source. Can't be sure but if it were something other than that you'd be seeing it on other channels as well as ESPN and probably on other input sources also.

Although its the simplest solution, if my set behaved that way straight out of the box, I'd send it right back for a different one. When I received mine it started correctly, functioned correctly and hasn't given me any real problems since I got it including any of the many issues others who post here have had. There's absolutely no reason for anyone who purchases a VT30 not to have the same positive experience that I've had with mine.

Another option obviously, and I'm sure you tried this already or are going to, is to contact Panasonic and find out how to reset the TV and start from scratch. I personally wouldn't want that particular set as it came out of the box with an existing issue.

Either way, I hope you're able to correct whatever's wrong one way or another. If you do, please post how you did so for other users in the future.

Everything is all set ... for future reference, you can initiate a System Self Check by holding down the vol(-) button on the TV and the menu key on the remote for about 5 seconds. Once the Self Check screen appears, hold the Power button on the TV until the TV turns off and then power up with the remote. BINGO!!
