Still not clear on why 4:2:2 is recommended over 4:4:4 for Bluray playback on the VT30 (and in general)? I thought I read a post about the VT30 doing it's processing in 4:2:2, but couldn't find it or I may be mistaken? Is the VT30 one of the displays where if you send it 4:4:4 or RGB it bumps it back down to 4:2:2 and then back to 4:4:4 to RGB? If so, then I understand why 4:2:2 would be best.

Also, I have Directv (HR24 box) and it outputs RGB 4:4:4, why does this not exhibit the same poor picture quality as the Boxee Box when outputting RGB? The Xbox 360 could be thrown in there as well since it outputs RGB. Does this mean the Directv box does a better internal conversion from 4:2:0 to RGB? And the Xbox shouldn't do any internal conversion as it's computer graphics, thus it outputs a "clean" RGB signal whereas if the Boxee Box is outputting RGB it has already converted it from 4:2:0? Is my thinking correct here?

Looking back at your original question it seems like you had a problem with the Boxee sending 'RGB Low' to the VT30.

I am not sure what Boxee defines as 'RGB low'.

I have a ROKU 2 connected to my 55VT30 which (now) sends RGB limited (16-235) and looks great. When the ROKU 2's first came out they were outputting RGB full (0 - 255) which caused problems with some TVs. Not sure about the VT30 as ROKU 'fixed it' to RGB limited by the time I got my VT30 - but my old LG 55LE8500 did not like RGB full unless I changed the black level setting.

Generally it would seem best to 'set your source components to output YCbCr if there is an option' per the Audioholics article - however if you have a source that can only output RGB (e.g. ROKU 2 or HR24) then try make sure it is sending RGB limited (16-255)

Sorry 'He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named' but the Cloak of Invisibility stops us shinning light on this matter.........

In my light controlled viewing room brightness is not an issue - coming from a local dimming full array LED/LCD I would say on balance the VT30 is better

+ screen uniformity (no banding on scrolling), color, motion resolution, overall picture

- black levels not quite as good - but still very good and fine watching real content in a dark room.

That is correct, the Boxee was set to RGB Low (16-235) and produced an exaggerated effect on banding, and blockiness. I did not notice this on every file, but the ones that I did, when I switched to YUV 4:2:2 it improved the picture dramatically.

What is strange is that the Xbox is set to output RGB "standard" (16-235) and I have found no setting option in the Directv box to change color space settings, but the info on my received indicates it is outputing RGB 4:4:4 (I assume it's 16-235). Both these sources look fine, so I don't know why RGB low would produce this effect from the Boxee.

I just watched our SD DVD version of Sin City through the credits. I wasn't able to detect any yellow in the whites using our OPPO 93 and calibrated Pioneer 6010. My son couldn't detect any yellow either, so the yellow overlay is subtle. Things may change as the movie gets going. It's my bed time and there's no way I'm going to watch that movie just before going to bed.

Where do you see the latest firmware? I've gone into what I think is the firmware screen, but don't see anything that says 2.1 or 2.2?

Also, does anyone have experience using Keydex 3d glasses or other universal glasses instead of the Panasonic glasses?

Just rec'd my new 55VT30 running break in slides. Purchased from Vanns. They were outstanding to deal with my first two units were damaged in shipment. Each time I called Vanns to report the damage they were very understanding and the customer service was outstanding. Both units were replaced with no questions asked. I guess the third time is a charm. I will continue to do business with them

The unit is a Dec. 2011 build. Anything other than run the break in slides using DNice break in settings?

Firmware upgrades etc.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Has anyone watched the 2011 shootout done by Value Electronics. I noticed some image retention on the vt6530. Is that a problem with this set, this will be my first plasma and I'm just a little nervous about pulling the trigger.

It is a problem with this set. More so than in the past. My first unit got burn-in from the setup menu, it was returned mainly for the green/pink issue though.

If you plan on watching mixed content then you should be okay and you will not have a major problem. Do not get this set if you are a heavy gamer or just watch ESPN (due to constant status bar at bottom). I only game about 1 to 3 hours a week (compared to about 40 hours of TV/Movie watching) and zoom the screen for ESPN. Also, be very carefull during the first 100 hours. Run breakin slides if possible or full screen movies (and stay out of the setup menu as much as possible). I've done all that on my second unit and did not have a problem with IR. Good luck.

I don't see how one could put too much weight into their videos as far as the picture quality goes. The camera and the people are all in different positions from one set to another so there really is no way to actually compare one set to another from different viewing angles. They also asked the people if they could tell the difference between a calibrated and non-calibrated set, if some are calibrated and others are not then all comparisons go out the window because it's comparing apples to oranges.

Hi all

Had my VT30 (Nov build EEPROM 64.47) calibrated by Gregg Loewen of LionAV. He was professional, thorough and patiently answered all questions. He calibrated the THX mode for me (pretty accurate to begin with as most calibrators have pointed out) and the result was a punchier image. Superbowl on the post-calibrated set looked glorious and movies are amazing.

Attached are some of the results. I highly recommend Gregg.

prep : Ran the D-Nice slides for 100 hours straight before calibration and had the windows in the viewing room covered up with heavy industrial plastic (available for about $15 at HD in the paint dept) during calibration.

- Cheers

As I've posted, I initially got a 64d7000 and returned it due to excessive buzzing. The pq of both tvs is very good. The black level and contrast of the panny appears superior and no audible buzzing. Howver, in reading the cnet review and talking to a local isf calibrator, it seems that the panny is limited in terms if how accurate a pro can calibrate the set. The pro I spoke with says he would just use thx mode to calibrate since the settings in custom don't give the expected results. He indicated the 64d7000 does allow for a more accurate calibration. Can anyone comment on this. Could the sammy pic be better after a more detailed calibration? Although the pic on the panny is great, if you want a calibration, does this make the sammy a better choice despite the buzzing? Ultimately, its panny vs. Samsung with no perfect choice. Thanks

In addition to the Panasonic Gen.2&3 glasses, I have a pair of the X-Pand 103 Universal glasses. A little bigger lens, comfortable, battery not rechargeable,(but you won't have to go through an ordeal when you need a battery versus Panasonic.) Very good price on Overstock.com. The glasses pick up a bit more rear reflection, if there is any to reflect, and on an absolute level, they may not be as perfectly focused as the Panasonics.
You can get Gen3 Panasonics for only a few dollars more, they are excellent.

Quick question. I recently picked up the 65vt30 and have been doing a little bit of gaming on Xbox. When I switch the video setting on the tv to "game" it automatically zooms the picture, cutting off some of the image. Is there a way to counter the zoom action?

BTW this is by far the best tv I have ever owned!

Tks

The Samsung plasmas are a lot easier to calibrate than the VT30. However in ISF mode the VT30 can be calibrated very accurately. They both have the same calibration controls available such as full CMS and 10 pt greyscale. Both can be calibrated to have minute errors. As far as which has the better picture you can't go wrong with either.

Under settings and network settings, I couldn't find it either at first. I still can't figure out the eeprom version, searches on this forum are less than helpful with my apparent search skills.

Got this from another poster!

Best way of knowing is to check the version of the EEPROM software...Press volume down until it reaches zero, continue to hold down on back of TV and press Info on remote 3 consecutive times. Wait for the menu to come up and look for PDP EEP:

65VT30
Fixed 84.46

55VT30
Fixed 64.47

After turn off TV with the remote

Any version below is not updated but it doesn't mean it will exhibit FBR from what I have read

In that (any) picture mode's settings, adjust the ASPECT to FULL and the SIZE to 2 for the full image.

Thanks for posting your calibration report. I've included it in the flat panel (post #2) lists that are linked at the bottom of my post.

Enjoy.

For me that would be irritating. I can't see living with irritation.

Confirmed by several calibrators.

Direct evidence observed first hand by you. That's good.

Maybe more difficult but does "limited" mean that you can see the difference as you can in the V30's black levels (see above).

Can you tell the difference? A good calibrator can sometimes tell a customer if the measured difference can be detected by the vast majority of viewers.

The comments by donnymac51 are consistent with comments UMR has made when I ask him similar questions. Maybe you're over analyzing your decision. If you actually were able to pick the very best display possible, and prove it to your satisfaction, it wouldn't be long until your choice would clearly no longer be the best.

In your situation I would stick with the Panasonic (unless you discover an irritation ) and use one of the calibrators with good references to calibrate it. See the link at the bottom of my post and check out post number two.

The manual says the TV power must be on to charge the 3d glasses. Does this mean you must be displaying a picture as well. The TV doesn't know it's charging glasses and not to display a picture? In other words, you should plan on watching TV while the glasses are charges?
you should be able to charge it from any USB device - like laptop for instance.

I just received my 65VT30 a week ago, and love it! D-Nice's setting are amazing. However, I am conflicted to put the tv on 60 hz or 90 hz for blu-rays. When watching North by Northwest, 60 Hz tends to look slightly better. In a couple of shots at the beginning of the film (2:52, 2:58, and 3:12) Cary Grant and his secretary are walking down the street and few ladies cut in front of them. When playing in 96hz, the each of ladies' sides of their faces appears to have a interlacing red and green tint, almost like a cheap 3D effect. When switched to 60hz, the green is gone and normal flesh tones are prevalent. So 60hz hands down right? However, with the 2.2 firmware update (which supposedly 96hz viewing) and with Cnet and a few others have mentioning 96hz has a slightly higher black level than 60hz. Would 90hz be the way to go, even with the red and red effect? Anybody else have the North by Northwest blu-ray and see the same thing???

Feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

I have never tried to charge the glasses with the TV (my TV is on the wall and essentially the glasses would be dangling from the TV )

I found, however, that you can charge the glasses on any computer with powered USB. Also, I found a USB plug adapter that works great with them.

This may be a little off topic, but if you guys purchased from an online retailer, did you purchase a warranty through square trade? Also, I am not eligible for extended warranties provided by the CC companies so that is sadly not an options for me. Give me some feedback!

Looking forward to getting my 65vt30 on V-Day via Amazon (gift for the wife....)! I have read some horror stories about the delivery services used by Amazon, so give me a few tips for "inspection". I also want to have it professionally calibrated at some point. I looked into buying the Calman auto calibrate software as an alternative to professional calibration. Would this be a sound decision that will provide equal results? I am located in Charlotte NC, so if you can recommend anyone, please do! Does D-Nice do calibrations?

EDIT: Just purchased an ideal-lume lighting kit to go behind this beast! Cant wait!
