Quick review on my new 65VT30:

I'm coming from a Toshiba 65HM167 DLP that was professionally calibrated by Eliab Alvarez de la Campa. I purchased my Panny from Value Electronics, and it was calibrated by Ed Johnson.

Now, keep in mind, I have never seen a Kuro... I seriously cannot believe how awesome this tv is. I was missing about 70% of the picture with my DLP. The clarity, color representation, etc., I just can't believe how great this tv looks. I'm using my PS3 to play Blu-Ray movies. 3D isn't really important to me, but my kids loved watching Untangled in 3D. I ordered 2 Xpand 103 3D glasses and they work great with this TV. The only "negative" is that going from Blu-Ray to Directv, you really notice a lot of imperfection with the source that you feed into the tv.

One nice thing about buying the panel already calibrated, Value Electronics ran the precalibration slides for 150 hours before Ed calibrated the panel. I have no buzzing, pink blobs, etc. All in all, I'm thrilled with my panel.

A noob question concerning gaming and 3D.

When I choose 3D on crysis 2 on my XBOX 360, it changed so that two identical images lined up next to each other. But how on earth do I get the TV to project a 3D image?

Tried to press the convert button but that absolutely exploded my head lol.

cheers

Sounds like side-by-side. I haven't used the XBOX 3D, but when you hit the 3D button on the TVs remote, make sure and press the little RED BUTTON that takes you to options for specific 3D formats. Then select side-by-side.

Also, there's some 3D options in the Xbox's settings, but I'm sure you already know this.

Just winging it, hope this helps.

Edit: I'm assuming you're using HDMI.

Ok. I just figured it would convert it to 3D if I used the remote like that. Must've chosen the wrong option as well cuz I srsly felt like my head was being fried on a hot pan lol. Ofc I'm using a hdmi ;>

cheers, will return if it/doesn't works peace out

Awesome, hope you get many years of enjoyment from it. I agree that the VT30 shows bad incoming signals for what they are. High quality looks great but even just mediocre quality can look really bad.

Ok no probs with the 3D now. Didn't look that spectacular though imo. And I actually feel like my eyes hurt a little bit from it. Been feeling that from movies as well. Not much but it's not that comfortable. Fuk.. rly don't want any issues with it since I think 3D is fantastic.

If the 3D game is using side by side to do 3d, you're only getting half resolution. That is why the image quality isn't that good.

FWIW, just spun up the Lion King 3D: looks great on the VT30--depth and colors are all that could be asked for-- a good demo to impress your Disney-loving friends.

It causes me eyestrain as well. I'm great with passive 3D (in the theaters), but my eyes don't seem to like active. It's an individual thing, as a close friend of mine says that the passive strains his eyes, but the active is good.

As far as 3D quality, side by side just isn't going to be all that great. From my personal experience, the best stereoscopic 3D formats have been:

1. Checkerboard, 2. Frame-packed, 3. Top and Bottom, 4. Side by Side

The only 3d gaming I experienced was on the ps3. And it looked very good. But from what I understand ps3 uses 720p frame packing. Plus it was converted to checkerboard with my DLP convertor box so it was a win-win either way.

As someone already mentioned, side by side is considered inferior if for no other reason than it results in lost resolution. Hopefully this isn't the route that xbox took, but then again, it wouldn't surprise me.

But don't worry. In a few years you'll be able to buy a passive 3D TV with full resolution

After a week, I'm still as impressed with the image quality of my 65VT30 as I was the first day. I came from a Samsung UN55C8000 - now in my bedroom - that is trumped in nearly every way by my VT30. The one thing I've noticed though that bothers me is the black bars on the Samsung are nearly jet black, but on the VT30 the overall level shifts quite a bit - will be jet black and then go grey. Since the black level on the VT30 is far superior, I'm just curious about this. I'm using my own variation of D-Nice's settings in Custom. Anyone have this same experience?

Hi, terzaghi:

I tried to play Kung Fu Panda 2 3D on my Panasonic 310 BRP (firmware 1.8), but got a "this disc is incompatible" message. May I ask, what BRP are you using please?

But I paid a price for those blacks (loss of shadow detail, blooming, etc., etc.).

Hey, make sure in Custom mode that C.A.T.S is turned off, and make sure that AGC is set to "0".

I am also using D-Nice settings but with a little adjustment on the black level. The settings crushed blacks a little. I tried some adjustments using AVS HD 709 / Spear and Munsil / Disney WoW. In the end I adjusted the contrast one click up to 55. Using the test disks I would maybe adjust to 57 - but that lead to dithering in the black bars - 55 seems to be the best compromise. Picture quality very good - but I may still get a professional calibration.

So, this is dumb but I'm kind of nervous and excited for tomorrows delivery of my 65VT30.
I'm really hoping I have a current build and EEPROM update on it and I'm just hoping there are no issues, damaged screen, etc.

I plan on first looking for the serial number, hoping its 1215+. Then I want to examine the screen (flashlight at an angle) to make sure it's ok. Next, I want to plug it in and check the EEPROM (looking for 84.46). If this is all good, I will accept delivery.

Am I missing anything? I really hope this is the last exchange I have to do...

You seem to have it covered pretty well as far as preliminary checks go. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Make sure all the cables and adapters are present. Another member got his set delivered and it was missing them.

So does anyone have a VT30 and Oppo 93 for a Bluray player. What is the 3d like? Do you get much popout effect when it's there? I have yet to see much in the way of popout and anything that does might be a foot or less then that from the screen. This is including on Avatar with scenes that I remember seeing lots of popout in the theatre. ex) giving the video diaries the comp graphics always stuck out a lot in the theatre, on the VT30 it hardly comes out at all. Is this normal?

Before you decide to return it (In case it doesn't meet all your requirements,) you may want to check to make sure the supplier has stock because these TV's are now getting very sparse to find.

I do.....and I am not an avid fan of 3d......they tend to be gimmicky and use"in your face" pop out visuals, rather than creating a "looking thru a window" effect, while creating a solid story..
If you really want to see what this setup can do...Get Hugo in 3D...Brilliantly done and,for the most part,I forgot I was even wearing glasses.
As for Avatar,I borrowed the "looking thru a window" quote from James Cameron...and remember,a lot of what you see or do not see depends a great deal on the transfer of the source material....not your equipment...

If future 3d releases gave the care that Scorcese (SP?) gave to Hugo,I would purchase a hell of a lot more titles in the future..

I do have this combo of TV & Blu-ray player (both models) and haven't played any 3D yet but will this month when I buy all my blu-rays and will report back.

I'm def going to get Hugo now.

Although I like the 3D on my Panny, the closest 3D I've experienced, on a consumer level, compared to the theater, has been DLP checkerboard.

Having said that, AS 3D causes me eye strain, so I choose my 3D material carefully.

I pick up this combo tomorrow. looking forward to this weekend after running the slides. Got to say thanks to the posters here, there's a wealth of information on everything about the VT30 and you helped me select this TV.
