Just got my VT30

New member here, just wanted to say thanks to the posters in this forum. I've read lots of your stuff and your input really helped me in choosing which TV to go with. I decided a while back to go with the VT30 as soon as I could get my hands on one.

I picked it up this afternoon and have had it up and running for about an hour now. Haven't really messed with any of the settings yet, I'm sure I have a full night of reading and tinkering ahead of me.

This if my first plasma so if there are any big don't do's that you feel like sharing I'm all ears.

congrats on the VT30!...post some pics and impressions when you get a chance

there really needs to be a dedicated VT30 owner's thread now that the VT30's are actually available

I'll get some pics up here shortly. Sounds like more fun than scaring myself reading about IR and Burn In.

From what I've read it sounds like I should just keep all the settings low for the first 200 hours and try to vary what I'm watching. Sound like a good start or am I just opening up a huge can of worms?

Do not worry too much about the IR. Pannys are excellent that way. Just enjoy. Burn in is a total non-issue. Just do not have anythingt static on the screen for more than 2 hours or so.

Pics please? How are the blacks? Any floating blacks or brightness? How is the processing? Does it still have the 96 Hz contouring like last years model?

Here are some pics, sorry the quality kinda sucks, currently I only have access to the camera on my phone and I'm struggling to get decent pics that aren't blurry with or without the flash. Maybe I can get some better ones tomorrow with some natural light in the room.

Just posted a link with the pics, not sure how to answer your other questions, sorry im new to all of this. I'd be happy test some things out and let you know. I'll do some reading of the manual and see if I can figure out how to check/test some of those things.

nice pics...love the redesign this year...very thin profile

run full screen for the first 120 hours or so just to play it safe, even though it's probably not needed

Yes, it's debatable about the many different ways people break in TVs. Not running the TV in vivid ("torch") mode at the beginning and watching a variety of things to fill the screen is one way I broke in a set without any repercussions.

Whom did you buy your TV from? And where are you located?

I got the TV from Abt Electronics in Glenview IL (North Suburb of Chicago). I live in northern Indiana, it was well worth the 2.5 hour drive up there to get it. So far I'm loving it, a huge step up from my old 40" Samsung LCD which will now be a great TV for my bedroom. Played around with the basic apps that the TV comes with which seem to work alright. I'm going to play around with the 3D functionality tomorrow. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Hey Pu, looking through the manual won't tell you those answers. Last year I bought the 58vt25 and my main complaint was this:

If you try this out and let me know, it would be great. Also check if you notice the level of black and white (or brightness) shifts suddenly while watching TV or blu-ray.

For proper break-in, you must oil your naked body, lay out 50 candles in the formation of the Prince symbol, and chant ancient Chinese proverbs for 3 days straight. Or else your TV will explode, and so will any babies within a 20 mile radius.

some cons from the first Pro Review so far:

"Color gradation on VT30 is not perfectly smooth and we still haven't seen a plasma TV without issues in this area (although Pioneer was close). In the darker end of the color gradient we did see some bands, which means that not all colors are perfectly distinguished. And there is some noise around fast moving objects. When it comes to picture quality Panasonic VT30 is not a huge revolution, and rather an evolution. This has been the case with Panasonic's high-end models for a few years now and I have to say that if you already own the VT20/VT25 from 2010 there is not much incentive to upgrade."

Although there are some minor negatives about the TV, here is the concluding paragraph from the review:

"But all in all there is no doubt that VT30 is another fantastic TV from Panasonic - and now with a new slim design and extended Smart TV functionality at a much lower introduction price than the 2010 VT range. Even though it is not a major leap forward in picture quality I am sure it will be one of the best TVs of 2011 in this price range - if not the best. And that is why I have no doubt that it deserves our Top Recommendation Award."

At this point, I'm looking forward to possibly buying one.

Is it just to be mean-spirited? Or to make people who buy this TV feel bad? Or to tear down the Panasonics? It has to be one or more of these reasons.

Is this bad boy comparable to the Pioneer Kuro as far as black levels? I know Panasonic bought Pioneers patents on plasmas (I heard they bought the factory too - for building plasmas). Just wondering if they implemented the technology yet??

It is comparable out of the box to the black levels on the 8G Kuro sets, however one person with insider knowledge has said that the black levels will still go up over time.

David, who wrote the review will tell you that the VT30 is the best Panasonic he has reviewed and he thinks there is a very good chance it will be the very best consumer level TV for 2011.

He indicates that those who feel that minor nuisance sort of things are "deal breakers" should start looking for used Pioneer sets, but those also had their flaws (per him).

This is link to the european 50VT30 review. Their measured black level was 0.02 cd/m2 which comes out to be (0.02*0.29) 0.0058 ftl. It remains to be seen if the US versions / larger sizes will measure lower. Only 55 and 65 inch versions will be in the US.

Likle the jmpage2 said, that is right around 8g Kuro levels (if they stay).

HDtest measured it to .0012 with a calibrated Klein K10 meter... I would put my money on their measurement, which comes out to .0035 ft/l.

Considering that was on the 42", it is possible that the 55 and 65 will be a bit better.
