Subwoofer on a budget

Thread Starter
So, I have a major quandary. I have been building my home theater system for about 6 months and doing it all on a pretty limited budget. Here is what I have so far:

HDTV:
Samsung PN50C550 1080p Plasma TV

Receiver:
Pioneer VSX-1020-k

Speakers:
Jamo S606 HCS3 5.0 setup

No I need a subwoofer to replace the POS KLH Bassbite V which has a whooping 40 watts and can in no way, shape, or form, perform near the class of what I have.

My problem is, until I started shopping, I didn't realize subs one of the most expensive pieces of the Home Theater. I am only looking to spend around $200 for a sub and can't find anything that would match up to what I have for under $350. I have been offered a Sunfire DS 8 for $200, but, from everything I have ready, everyone says to stay away from Sunfire. Is there anything in the $200 range that will match up to what I am looking for.

The room it will need to fill will be 12' x 15' with 7' ceilings. The 606s have 8" subs in them, but are extremely lacking in the LFE department. That is why I am looking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For under $200 I heard great things about the BIC F12. I had the same issue (price wise) so thats what everyone recommended. I would recommend shopping on craigslist tho, you can find crazy good deals there, if you have the time and are willing to do so. Otherwise I think a BIC F12 is a safe bet for under $200.

Are you willing to spend up to $300?

I would check out these two choices:

Lava LSP12 will sound better with music and have good output above 35hz
It is priced at $287 shipped with the AVS member discount

http://www.lavasubs.com/12_inch/powe...subwoofer.html

The BIC PL-200 Will sound better with movies and will extend deeper with more output below 35hz but is perhaps not the most cleanest for music according to owners. It can be had for as low as $279

Here are some Jamo subs on Vanns:

And here are some open box deals on Vanns. There are some open box Boston Acoustic Subs selling for just over $100.Not sure how good they are but you could pick up two of them and have smoother in room bass response:

How would one get the AVS discount on the lava sub? Do I have to call?

If you're looking for a HT subwoofer I wouldn't bother looking at the Lava. BIC F12 or PL-200

Well a PA-150 just sold recently on Ebay for $310 shipped

I just ordered one myself and it arrives tomorrow. I also own an eD A2-300 which is a great sub but costs $415 shipped.

Try out a few home theater shops and see if they are selling any demos. Check big box stores for returns like best buy. About once a month they sell all their open box at 20% off. If you take the time you will find something That will work for you.

How are the F12 or PL-200 on the mid-high bass? I have the Mirage nanosat system in my bedroom with the receiver's crossover set to 120 Hz. I don't care about shaking the walls with this system. I just want it to sound good, even at lower volume.

http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...er-4-2005.html - Ed Mullen review of 505, little output below 30-35 Hz but still may be reasonable for music and some HT situations. Polk sub amps have generally been quite reliable.

At around $200, individuals in this forum like the BIC F12 and Premier Acoustic PA-120. At under $300, individuals like the BIC PL-200 and Lava LSP12. You need to check the respective threads in this forum on how to get the best price.

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/s...sp12-subwoofer - Lava LSP-12 - drops off substantially below 35 Hz

At around $400, individuals like the Hsu STF-2 and eD A2-300 that do not show some of the deficiencies of the lesser priced subs (one note wonders or little output below 30 Hz).

If you want to drop down further in price, the BIC V1020

if your talking about the one that sold on 4/16/11 that was me and getting it for that price took a bit of persistance and begging...lol. actually i said if i liked it i would order another. I love it and got 2 of these things. i went from a paradigm ps1200v2 to this sub and the pa-150 is a cleaner sounding sub and this come from a man that sold paradigm and paradigm reference for 8yrs at a store i managed. The rest of my system isparadigm reference with studio 100v2 and 550 watt hafler amp on each and this 15 has no problem keeping up the second one was bought to help break up standing waves it the room. i have the subs set at onl a little over 1/4 gain and the preamp is set at a negative 7.5db.
