Since no one knows the make/model of the audio receiver, I'd say... HDMI to the TV from D* receiver and HDMI from DVD directly to the TV. Then run either optical or coax from each device to the audio receiver.
If the audio receiver has HDMI in/out... run both devices to the HDMI inputs of the receiver and one from the output of the receiver to the TV.
Seriously... connect the HDMI's directly to the TV.
You put the inputs in and the outputs out.
Turn the hardware on and start jumping up and down.
You do the hokey pokey and turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about.
What kind of speaker setup do you have? External stereo speakers? Stereo + subwoofer? 5.1 multichannel? 7.1 multichannel? Or maybe a soundbar? Or are you using just the TV's internal speakers?
Hook all the hdmi outputs from your components into the receiver's hdmi inputs. Then run one hdmi cable from the receiver's output to the tv.
You said your tv is 3d compatible but your receiver is not. For all components that are only 2d, like a cable box or a dvd player, that wont matter, as they arent 3d anyway. If you do have a 3d component, like a 3d blu-ray player, and you want to output 3d, you will have to connect that component directly to the tv, and you will have to find another way to get sound to the receiver.
